“Don't think of a swim in the pool”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2012

Visited in August 2012 as part of an organized tour for 2 nights. The hotel is at the bottom end of the village of Zermatt and a fair walk to the centre of the town but in all reality, it's not a big place so the walk to the centre of the village was ok.
Like other hotels visited, although in an alpine resprt, the room was warm but in this case was not air conditioned. I can understand the limited need for air conditioning in an alpine resort but the warm room combined with only feather doona bedding resulted in a poor night's sleep.
The room was very generous, and included a large couch, king bed and had the added benefit of a (very) small additional bedroom with a single bed. The bathroom was very modern with a somewhat strange circular clear glass/perspex shower capsule at one end of the bath - definitely no possibility of picking up the soap if dropped! The large balcony was great for airing washed clothing! Unfortunately our room didn't have a view of the Matterhorn (the only on in the complex I think).
Breakfast was generous and a good variety offered.
The thought of a refreshing swim in the pool was appealing until it was discovered it was in a dungeon like space in the basement of one of the buildings and the water temperature was 30 degrees centigrade. The humidity in the fully enclosed space was overwhelming.

Room Tip: Make sure youngest a room with a view to the Matterhorn. I think the hotel claims they all do but r...

We had a good-sized double room with an average bathroom. The beds and pillows were wonderful, as were the duvets. My daughter loved the salt and fresh water pools, the whirlpool and the ping pong tables. Internet computers available for guests. Minifridges in room, AC. Very quiet location. Fabulous included breakfast - best we had in Europe. Hotel staff were pleasant, prompt pickup and delivery to train station. Very clean. I recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 608, under the tennis courts. Didn't hear any noise from the dance club. Nice...

We stayed at the Best Western Alpen Resort Hotel during a ski vacation in January 2012. This hotel consists of several buildings connected by walkways. Our newly renovated room was located on the top floor of the building closest to the road. By European standards, the room was quite large, with lots of closet space and even a kitchnette.

Breakfast was included, and served in the small restaurant on the main floor of our buidling. The selection was always plentiful and fresh. We found it to be a great way to start our ski day! Dinner was served in the main building, a short walk away. Although some evening meals were quite tasty, we found other nights to be rather bland.

The hotel itself is located about 400m past the main strip in town, where the train station and the cog rail up to Gornergrat are both located. If you prefer not to walk, a shuttle bus (included with lift tickets) runs right past the hotel and takes you to the Sunnegga and Schwarzsee lifts.

The lift tickets for Zermatt allow you to access both the Swiss and Italian resorts. It's worth a (ski safari) trip to Valtournenche, a historic mountaineering town located about 45km away, on the Italian side. Also on the Italian side, Cervinia is a purpose built resort and looks as if it's stuck in the 1970's...a bit run down.

Overall, this was a reasonably priced hotel (for Zermatt), with good access to the ski lifts and not too far from the main strip in town.

We orderd a room for four and recieved a two and a half rooms with two bathrooms apartment! The staff was kind and helpful, breakfast was more than satisfying, the pool was a pleasant way to end along day.We reccomend. Oh, don't forget to call the hotel as soon as you arrive to Zermat by train, the will come to take you from the railway station with the hotel's electric cart.

While visiting our son in Switzerland, he and his girlfriend took us on an overnighter to Zermatt. (If it doesn't ring a bell, this is where the famous Matterhorn peak is located.) He booked us at the Alpen Resort Hotel as a birthday gift. First of all, the view is truly breathtaking. Whether cloudy or clear, the view will stun you. It is very peaceful. This German-speaking town is great for, of course, skiing, snowboarding, and hiking. But there are shops galore, hidden restaurants, and tempting pastry shops. The proprietors of our hotel literally thought of EVERYTHING. From kleenex and wet towel racks in the bathroom (even a pull-out rack for your wet bathing suit) - none of the other hotels we had stayed at in Paris or Rome had these things, to towels and robes with a cute tote bag to make your swim a lot more pleasurable. My husband and I swam in the Olympic size salt-water pool, followed by a sauna AND steam room experience. Our son chose the freshwater pool. Breakfast, covered in the price of the room, included artisan breads, homemade jams, cheeses, meats, museli, fruit, cereal, yogurt, caffe, tea, oh and did I mention the champagne? There is free internet in the lobby, cozy little spots to enjoy drinks inside and out, tennis courts and a shuttle to the train. There are no cars in Zermatt except the taxis. We had a fully stocked kitchenette, but there were too many excellent restaurants to pick from. I can't rave enough about his hotel - it made our last few days in Europe very relaxing!

Room Tip: There are many hotels in this town - I only know that this one was perfect. We were on the second f...

A traditional alpine hotel close to all amenities. Our room had a magnificent view of the Matterhorn which was a delight to wake up to in the morning. The restaurant food was delicious and the service throughout our stay was very good. I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a true Swiss alpine experience.
