There's one reason you go to 3100 Gornergrat: the views. And they don't disappoint.

The hotel itself is nice, but a little on the basic side. We paid for the top tier "Junior Suite" and it was definitely the most simplistic $400/night room I've ever stayed in. That said, dinner and breakfast were included in the price and they were both outstanding.

The front desk service was fine, but certainly nothing extraordinary. Our server at the restaurant was excellent though.

I didn't realize how hard sleeping could be at that altitude. I'm 30 and it mildly bothered me, but it really bothered by 54-year-old mother (she had to take an extra blood pressure pill to lower her heart rate because of it).

That said, the views make up for any shortcomings. Watching the sun rise from our room was truly one of the most spectacular sights I've ever seen.

The thing that struck me the most about this hotel was how secluded it was from the rest of the world. Once the train stops running for the night, you are completely isolated on this mountain. That can definitely be a positive, but for me personally, it left me feeling a bit stir crazy. We had stayed in Zermatt the night before and enjoyed walking around the town. If I had to do the trip over again, I would have probably stayed the night again in Zermatt and just taken the train to Gornergrat for a day trip.

The location is just incredible. You wake up with the view on the highest mountains of Switzerland. Either Monte Rosa or Matterhorn view from your bed. Just this is already worth the stay. You are so remote, when all skiers and guest have left the Gornergrat you are just alone with the other guests. Cozy restaurant with decent food. Completely new and renovated rooms, with the name of the mountain you are facing with lots of detailed decoration inside. The staff is funny and very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was very good, with big selection, fresh bread, eggs, cereals. Great cheese selection.

Really nothing. Only keep in mind: the location is remote. No way of getting any nightlife, since last train in winter departs at 7.30 pm. But this is exactly why you want to be up there in the mountains! Alone!

The best thing you get staying here: the chance to be in nature with the matterhorn at your doorstep without so many people..... that is once the last train leaves you are only with the hotel guests. We stayed here 1 night, and enjoyed a great meal and breakfast with a view. While we did not hike up from Zermatt we took 2 decent day hikes from the hotel. You can easily find a 3 hour challenging hike where you encounter a ton of rocks, snow ,and marmotts. Some hints: get up early to take photos before the clouds come in (and people!), and take a photo of your door so you rememember your room name (ie room number). The service was really great - my brother and law was nursing an injury and asked for ice - which he got in a vaccuum sealed bag with a smile.

The Kulm Hotel Gornergrat is an experience not to be missed while visiting Switzerland. Just a 45 minute train ride from Zermatt - lies Gornergrat - like a cup surrounded by some of the highest peaks in Europe - it is a spectacular destination. Most visitors do Gornergrat as an excursion from Zermatt - but staying a night there is something special. Every single room has fantastic views of the mountains and the delicious sit down dinner is as romantic as things can be. If you enjoy a scenic calm and a different perspective to Switzerland - you must do this even if it means planning Zermatt around it

Room Tip: Choose a room facing the Duforspitze.

A fascinating experience. You "climb" from Zermatt by funicular and reaches 3100m of altitude where is located this beautiful and cozy hotel. The views are fabulous, especially if you're on a sunny day. The rooms are simple but comfortable, the food is good, but nothing special, and the staff is receptive. The only drawback is that because of the altitude, is likely that you feel a certain weariness on arrival and some discomfort especially for sleeping. Still worth spending 1 or 2 nights at this hotel.

The Kulmhotel truly has the most outstanding location and when visibility is good, the view is stunning. People just run around taking pictures.

The rooms are modest but good, furnished sparsely but comfortably with pine accents.

As the hotel is impossible to access after 7pm, the experience is that of a nice secluded getaway, with mountains and stars for company. The common area decor is very pleasant, there are lots of windows and candles are lit.

I found the bedding arrangement a little odd. Two twin beds bolted to the floor about 10 cm apart, with two sets of single bedding. I would have preferred a double bed. The bedlinen is crepe-y in style (not smooth).

Housekeeping was excellent (except when they knocked for the first time at 8.30am) - they give you a little bottle of water and welcome chocolates, which was a very nice touch.

Perfect location to ski down from in the morning, when you get the slopes largely to yourself. There is no ski hire at the hotel but you can hire equipment in Zermatt on the way up. You can ski over to the Italian side (Cervinia) and get back in the same day.

The hotel is high up and some people may experience some altitude sickness and need time to acclimatize. I found myself short of breath and digestion felt totally different.

Overall, service was extremely pleasant and accommodating to guests in a range of languages at the same time.

Room for improvement:

Meals. The hotel offers half-board (there is no other possibility for dining given hotel location). The food I would describe as form over function. Everything is served beautifully with some pomp.

However, the food is quite traditional (as in: heavy), and each evening there is a choice of meat or fish (no standard vegetarian option). It's four courses: salad bar, soup (fixed), choice of two mains, dessert (fixed). Drinks are extra.

I would have welcomed some lighter, healthier food options (unbreaded fish, fresh vegetables, less cheese and butter everything) in the main courses, especially at this altitude. The tastes were slightly incoherent. Desserts could be improved. One example was half of a blueberry muffin on its side on top of a criss-cross of pink and yellow coulis, with thin slices of pineapple and dusted with bits of pistachio. I am probably being picky. The other desserts during my stay were: fried dough and swiss roll (white with Grand Marnier cream filling). Maybe a dessert trolley is the way forward. Would have welcomed a creme caramel, chocolate mousse or apple tart or simply some fruit.

Breakfast was a nice selection. Would have welcomed a range of fresh fruit not drowned in syrup and homemade jams and local honey (rather than standard-issue factory stuff). Milk came in one variety. Fresh juice would have been a nice touch.

Other than that, it was wonderful. For info, breakfast is 8-10 in winter and dinner is 18.30-20.30.

Hotel rooms are given names of local mountains and numbered according to their altitude. This was a nice touch but made it difficult for people to remember their room number when ordering drinks. So, memorize your room number and check your bill at the end.

Service was extremely friendly and accommodating.

Room Tip: Matterhorn view is worth paying for - but only if there is no clouds in the way.
