This is a typical Swiss run small hotel, spotless. Its a bit out of town, in fact on the outer limits so for night club folks it would be a bit off the beaten track. However it is well worth this slight inconvenience as it is quiet and serene. Apparently one of the owners was the director of the movie "Monsters Ball" and the downstairs decoration reflects this.
rooms are very modern and comfortable staff great, special mention to Joint manager Sarah, great personality and full of local knowledge. Rates are good for Zermatt, food excellent, if you have never been get Sarah to organise the helicopter trip round the Matterhorn, well worth it.
would go back there in any return trip to Zermatt.

we stayed here for a few days in their junior suite and were totally comfortable. the staff are friendly and very accommodating. nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them and they made us feel welcome.
however it was their restaurant which was a total surprise. i live in Europe now and have dined at some very fine restaurants but the food in their restaurant was the best i have had for a very long time. in fact, the food was so good we were both completely perplexed why it was not booked out every night. whoever this chef is he should be in a Michelin restaurant as his skills seemed slightly unappreciated. we ordered a lobster dish one evening but substituted the veal for red fish. the result was outstanding and he accommodated our requests without any trouble. i will go back here just to be able to visit the restaurant again and i hope this hotel appreciated they really have a master chef on their hands who takes pride in his cooking.

The outside building is authentic like the old chalets. Inside it has been renovated in a design / baroque style but respecting the traditional aspects of mountain chalets and materials (Stone, wood, furs,...). Wonderful service and food. The very good in-house wine was a surprise. Free coffe / tea selection and home made cakes until 18h00 in the lounge. Rooms are big and nicely decorated, the SPA is super and we loved the view! A plus: they lend you an Ipad during your stay with free connection!! Bathrooms are very beautiful.
We can only recommend this address knowing that it is NOT in the centre of Zermatt. (Which for us was what we wanted !). An address we keep.

Room Tip: We had a room with agreen carpet... so if you don't like green, just ask not have that one :). B...

I booked Matthiol as it offered spacious rooms, was a bit outside of the Main Street in Zermatt and seem to bundle all the goodies All the good Zermatt ski chalets offer.
First of all, hotel is run professionally in every aspect- communication is cordial, hotel is kept immaculate, breakfast is sumptuous and even after 3 nights offer just enough variety, and service cordial. Hotel provides an iPad in at least Junior Suite.

While in Zurich and Bern, we chose a hotel near central city, but in Zermatt, we chose the place a bit outside for simple reason- after an afternoon full of skiing or evening walk through city and dinner, we wanted to come to our room of peace and space. Matthiol delivered that with style and class. It's ski room is well designed, just like its spa or the suites. Functional design come alive through its decor.

We used taxi for skiing trips and walks for lunch/ dinner. Only once, out 12 yrs old, asked for carbide back home from dinner.

It is an upscale boutique place, but you are in Zermatt and by that standard, it offered best value for the money.

Room Tip: Suite rooms are really nice!

My girlfriend and I just return from our trip to Zermatt and stayed at Matthiol. It was one of the most beautiful, scenic and superb hotels we've ever stayed. Our room was very well decorated with a modern decor. It was very spacious which caught us by surprise given that it's a boutique type hotel. The front desk folks are some of the most friendliest and knowledgeable. If you plan to stay here, ask for Sara. She's the best in the biz. She helped us decided whether it was worth the last minute trip to the Mattahorn Glacier Paradise given the weather. Sara was so friendly and knowledgeable that we absolutely love the experience and did not want to leave. We look forward to coming back to Zermatt and stay here again later in the year.

P.S. They also have some of the best breakfast foods and can pretty much anything you like at no extra charge.

Room Tip: All the rooms are of equal size and are large. Can't go wrong with any of them.

As I write this review i havent even checked out. Hotelatrhiol was by far the BEST hotel we stayed in all of our switzerland week and a half vacation. The spa is just perfect after a day of skiing. Our routine was hot tub, warm shower and then 10 minutes in one of the saunas. They provide ski/snowboard rental service with Julen sports and they deliver pn your firat night and pick up equipment when youre done at no additional cost. Ive seen many reviews complaining about location but i dont see why. Yes, the hotel is a little further down from main street but the bus stop is RIGHT at the corner of the street. Buses are free with ski pass although i never actually showed the driver mine. It had a beautiful view of the matterhorn and breakfast was delicious. I tries the pancakes and ommelettes and rhe variety of bread and cheeses is fantastic. They also have a capuccino machine complimentary for all you coffee fanatics. We spent our honeymoon in Switzerland and our best memories will definitely come from Zermatt and hotel matthiol. Our room had a bathtub right in the corner of the living room!!! So romantic!

I stayed at the Matthiol with my three teenage children during spring break this year. It was a ski vacation that we planned months ago. We were at the hotel for four nights. We were all very pleased with our experience there.

The good: The rooms are large by European standards. They are clean, modern, and have all the amenities you would expect from an up-scale mountain hotel, other than a fireplace. The rooms have a nice outside deck with a couple chairs. Other than for breakfast, we didn't spend much time in the restaurant/bar off the lobby. It appeared cozy, and nice. We received excellent service from the front desk. They assisted us in getting our equipment rented and answered whatever questions we had with a smile. (There is a relationship between the hotel and a rental shop the provides hotel guest a 10% discount and free pickup and delivery of rental equipment.) Good water pressure, comfortable beds. (Two tell-tale signs of a good hotel!) Each of our rooms (which I believe were among the smaller in the hotel) had a pull-out couch. I believe all rooms did. That fact isn't advertised on the hotel's website.

Breakfast was great! It included a good variety of fruit, cheese, meats, yoghurt, and cereals. Eggs were made to order. We didn't eat any other meals there, but I looked over the menu. It looked great but was pretty expensive (entrees between $38-$59). But in a place were the typical restaurant charges $7 for 9 ounces of Coca-Cola, it's relative.

The bad: The hotel is on the far edge of town. Go get anywhere in Zermatt where you would want to go, it's a good 15 - 20 minute walk. Going into town is all down-hill and easy. Coming back is more challenging. It's not horrible, but after a night out, it can be an . . . , exhilarating walk. It's also about a 7 minute walk to the bus stop that takes you to the Matterhorn Express gondola. A bit if a hike in ski boots, but not too bad. (We did see people skiing down the mountain relatively close to the hotel, but never worked at figuring where we would have to be to ski back in the evenings.) A cab ride from town to the hotel is 26 Swiss Francs (about $28), so that gets pricey.

I recommend the hotel and would definitely stay there again (but I'd figure out how to ski back to the hotel!)
