Having read some of the reviews on here, and also seen the pictures of the quirkiness of the Matterhorn Focus, we just had to stay here. Our only concerns beforehand were really as to whether it was accessible enough for town, and whether it being bed and breakfast only would detract in some way from the overall stay. It is also, of course, not cheap, but then again nothing in Zermatt is, so I'll only say on that account that I gave it 5 stars for value.
From the very moment you arrive in your private electric taxi into the underground tunnel and are taken up the elevator into the hotel you just feel special. In fact you are special, because you are about to stay in a very unique and special hotel. Everything is wonderful, and we had smiles on our faces every time we walked in.
We stayed in a superior room, which was spacious, immaculate, and had great views back over Zermatt itself. The staff could not have been more pleasant or helpful, even down to the restaurant reservations and recommendations, which we would not otherwise have found or tried ourselves (Le Gitan and the Stockhorn by the way, both great in very different ways).
The breakfast was simply wonderful, the pool (which becomes part jacuzzi outside) and wellness centre amazing (the detail which goes into for example the chandelier over the swimming pool is just stunning) and the sitting areas are simply luxurious. Everly little detail seems to have been taken care of, right down to keycard controlled individual (and heated, naturally) ski and boot lockers.
The location itself, to go onto my earlier reservations, is simply perfect. In much of Zermatt you have to walk a long way or pay for expensive taxis, and then onto the the more restricted skiing areas of the Rothorn or the Sunnegga. From the Focus you are literally straight onto the Glacier Paradise gondola, from where you can go anywhere, even (virtually) straight over to Cervinia in Italy. You can also walk into the centre of town in 5 or 6 minutes, so everything is at your fingertips as it were.
I can only sum up by saying that I could not fault the Focus in any way whatsoever, and can say that it deserves every one of its plaudits and accolades in spades. I would come back here without hesitation, and in fact am almost spoilt forever by this place. Thank you Matterhorn Focus for an unbelievable stay!
