“Fantastic place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013

This hütte was amazing! Only 20-30 min walk from the Trockener Steg station. Nice host family, very cozy dining area both inside and outside. 3 course dinner at 7 p.m., which tasted excellent. And good Weissbier! The cutest litte kitty was just a bonus :) We went from Gandegghütte whith the gondol back to Schwarzsee-station where you can walk towards the Matterhorn. Very nice trip! I would absoloutely recommend it!

“Best mountain restaurant in Zermatt if you like a perfect location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2013

The Gandegghuette is the most authentic of all mountain cabins in Zermatt.

At an altitude of over 3000m and with a location that is a bit off the downhill slopes (around 5 min horizontal/slighly uphill walk off the main slope) and cannot be seen from those slopes, it is a bit of an insider tip.

Don't expect michelin star level cuisine or amenities: the kitchen and the cabin are supplied daily by helicopter, caterpillar, or snowmobile, and are operated without high voltage electricity, running water, or central heating, and that has some impact on the menu, and on comfort (of the toilets, which are outside, for example).

But... You get a whole lot in return:
- the best views of the Zermatt area are from the Gandegg Huette into the Glacier Valleys that run off the Kleine Matterhorn and offer spectacular sceneries.
- A genuinely friendly and warm welcome by the hosts, the Lehner family, who have done a great job to refurbish and renovate the exterior and the interior recently without losing any of the charm but adding many new and warm touches.
- a great terrace and cosy interior
- authentic swiss food and drinks (try the coffee Gandegghuette!)
- the feeling of getting away from the sometimes frantic hustle and bustle of the Zermatt skiarena to enjoy his little secret in the privacy of a few handful of other insiders

Enjoy!

PS: There's more, for the slightly adventurous: We asked the hosts, Richard and Yvette, whether we could stay the night at Gandegghuette, and were pleasantly surprised to learn that indeed there is the possibility to stay there every wednesday. We decided to take on this opportunity, and stayed there overnight with two families (4 adults, 4 kids). What a wonderful experience, seeing the other guests leave, the sun setting with beautiful purple glows over the Monte Rosa peaks, enjoying our aperitif followed by a great cheese fondue, sleeping in bunk beds with comfortable and warm pillows and duvets and a swiss-themed-hot water bottle to keep even the coldest ones warm; and then waking up above 3000m to see the Alps getting lit by the first rays of sunshine. Then a perfect breakfast, and off we were to a guided glacier tour, led by the Cabin host Richard himself (he's a very experienced guide as well). What an unforgettable 24hours! Richi and Yvette, thanks a lot on behalf of the whole group! Looking forward to next year!

“out of the way on the mountain but worth the effort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2012

The Gandegghutte is one of the few mountain restaurants that you have to ski/walk UP to.

Visited it for a late lunch after a cold, windy morning skiing to and from Cervinia.

Good hot food was available quickly, which is amazing since the restaurant is not connected to mains services except electricity and has difficulty in obtaining supplies due to it's relatively remote location on the mountain.

“A remote mountain restaurant that's well worth the effort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2012

We were referred to the Gandegghutte, a small restaurant perched underneath the Kleine Matterhorn gondola by our local ski instructor. "Best Kaseschnitt in Zermatt" we were told and the advice was sound. Two slices of bread baked in an earthernware dish smothered in cheese with a fried egg and bacon on top. Authentic and delicious. Tremendously friendly welcome and straightforward tasty food in a great room, lots of local skiers in evidence. It's hard to get to, but it's well worth it. Save some room for the monumental chocolate cake to finish. Coffee was the best on the mountain too.
