What a great way to travel across the alps; drive across this high mountain pass at the beginning of the season shortly after it opens. The snow and ice that lines part of the road (more so on the southern Italian approach) is 2-3 metres high in places! Most people drive slowly and there are frequent places to stop so you can enjoy the views. The monastery and church at the top are steeped in history. We snuck a view of the StBernards in their cages as the 10 Swiss franc charge seemed somewhat steep to look and not pat
