“Convenient Pit Stop in Beautiful Lugano”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2013

Ideal location for long walks along the lake and the old city center. 1 minute walk from central bus station, which was very convenient to go longer distance. Very decent level of services - renovated, clean and quiet rooms that are functional and sufficient. Enjoyed a solid breakfast and helpful staff. Off-season price is perhaps a bit expensive for the offerings, however we saved on taxi and other extras due to its great location. Would stay there again! Bravo

Room Tip: ask for a quiet room on the top floor

Hotel Zurigo is a solid 3* hotel in a good spot on the edge of the old town. Rooms a very basic but are clean and functional. Breakfast was not good with stale pastries and cereal - do yourself a favour and skip it for a coffee and pastry at one of the many cafes in the old town (Italian prices in Switzerland!)

The first thing you notice when you arrive at the reception desk is the complete absence of staff at any hour of the day. You have to ring a bell in order to be served. There is nothing here which even resembles a welcome. Not a single smile coming from the lady at the reception during our whole stay.

We booked a standard double room for 2 nights (360CHF in total) and it doesn’t look like the pictures on the website. It looks more like an unpleasant mixture between a hospital room and a Swiss army barrack (I’m Swiss). We could not change since the hotel was full.

No double bed, just two uncomfortable individual beds covered with old sheets. When we asked why there was no duvet in our room, they told us it was because it was too hot in summer, whereas the other rooms had them. There even were small holes in the sheets.

The bathroom door was a kind of a joke : a sliding door (and I mean the door slides all the time, there’s no way to keep it open) with a roughly screwed plastic piece supposed to be a handle. Even though we put a “do not disturb” sign, the maid tried to open the room and woke us up. Twice.

Even if the location of the hotel is convenient (in the city center and close to the train station), do not expect to sleep with open windows at night and closing them will hardly solve the problem. There is a dubious “night club” next to it, so be prepared for some late night agitation.

I didn’t have high expectations about the breakfast, since included in the price. It was a basic one, but the fruit salad comes from a tin can which can be bought in any local store, which is taking the customer for an idiot. In addition, they handled us the bill for the room with our coffee. Breakfast is for eating, check-out is for paying. Were they in a hurry to see us leave ? An obvious lack of good manners in my opinion.

Finally, when we politely addressed our complaints to the reception during check-out, the lady didn’t seem to care at all and was arrogant enough to spit on our back while talking with another customer.

Definitely not a 3 stars hotel, hardly a 2 stars one. If you are looking for a romantic week-end, search somewhere else.

Great hotel! We turned up with no booking having travelled a long way. Reception was warm and welcoming and we were immediately booked into two very clean rooms which were perfect for our overnight stay en route. Breakfast was basic but fed us and our three children well. No complaints and would recommend.

Location is great, but overall standard is quite poor, even though rooms are clean, the furniture is very simple and uncomfortable, only thing you can do in the room is sleeping :)

Breakfast is very simple as well. There are lot better options in Lugano.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2012

We stayed 5 nights in March 2012. It was my husband, me, and our 3.5 year old, who slept in an inflatable bed that we brought for her.

The room was fine, and there was enough space for the extra child's bed... but not much more. The beds themselves were comfortable, with very clean sheets and blankets. There was also a small refrigerator in the room, which was full of stuff to buy, but we found room for our own drinks. With the window closed, we didn't notice the street noise.... and there was plenty since our room opened onto a busy street.

The bathroom had only a tiny shelf above the sink for personal items, which was not enough for us. But everything was clean, which is the most important element for me.

We parked our car in the hotel garage for 15 CHF per day. We had unlimited in/out, and did not need to interact with the staff at all for this, which was nice.

The staff was fine. We didn't ask for recommendations about Lugano, so I can't comment on that. But when we did interact during check-in and at breakfasts, I always got the impression that they were "cold". Not rude, just not "friendly".

The breakfast area had one child's high chair, which our daughter appreciated (she doesn't like sitting on her knees). The food was fine for breakfast. Only one cereal option, though. The croisants were good.

The location is great. Being across the street from the bus station gives you quick access to most of Lugano, and fast access to the center, the lake, and the conference center (Centro Congressi).

I would go back because it's a good, clean place. But It's certainly not luxury.
