“Badly designed rooms and close to a noisy funicular”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2013

My partner and I stayed in this hotel for 1 night. The staff were friendly and helpful and during check in the hotel shock when the funicular went past. It seems strange that a hotel was built over a funicular and parts of the hotel obviously suffer from the noise. Only a faint rumbling could be heard from our room 214.

Our room was small and stuffy with very strange angles. The bed was small and uncomfortable. The flat screen TV with several English channels was the highlight. The bathroom had a glass shelf over the loo. My partner knocked his head on the corner off the shelf and wounded his head. The shelf is difficult to see.

The view from the window was of a wall that had works of art hung on it. Some effort had been made to improve the view.

The hotel is easy to find and centrally located.

Not bad value by Swiss standards and may have reflected the noisy location. Would not recommend.

Room Tip: Anything away from the funicular!

Stayed here one night after doing the Bernina express
Our travel agent booked what is an extremely overpriced, difficult to find hotel.
Our twin room was almost beside the funicular that rumbles so loudly the room almost shakes.
We had to leave the windows open as the room was heated, we couldn't adjust heater, and it was hot and stuffy. Needless to say that doubled the outside noise.
Bathroom was adequate as was breakfast, but think seriously about staying here as I am sure there must be quieter hotels in same area.

Room Tip: If you must stay here, ask to be as far from funicular as possible

in October 2013 it was the 3rd time we stayed here. it is very centrally located, a short ride by funicular from the train station. the hotel is in the middle of the city center and walking distance to the lake. the staff is very nice and friendly. specially the blond short haired lady at the check in and the lady at the breakfast. breakfast is great. and I would recommend adding it to anyone's stay. we stayed 3 nights, and the funicular that runs through the hotel .... I wore earplugs at night and heard nothing!! on our next visit to lugano .... we will stay here again!!

It is hard to believe how building permission for this hotel has ever been granted. The funicular going to the train station of Lugano runs through it, so it is impossible to get any sleep before midnight and after 5 am which is when the funicular is operating. My room was very shabby and very claustrophobic as there was only a window overlooking a damp wall and it was very high so couldn't even open it. The weirdest thing was that there was no bathroom door so the room was extremely damp and moldy.

Yes, this hotel is built literally around a funicular cable car. I only stayed here for one night with a Cosmos tour and am very glad it was only one night! The cable car stopped later at night, so wasn't a problem getting to sleep. If you want to go to bed early, you'll likely have issues as the funicular can be heard in any room of the hotel and is quite noisy! They did have a small fan in the room, so we used that to try and block out some of the noise.
The room itself was very basic - nothing special or fancy here. The rooms, especially the bathroom, seemed quite outdated and could use a remodel. Wifi costs 2 francs and is very slow - don't do it. Others said the bar next door to the funicular gave you a wifi code if you bought a drink - would recommend that solution! The room did seem clean, but outdated. I think with a remodel, this would be a much nicer place to stay.
Breakfast was fine, nothing special. They did have orange juice made from fresh oranges which was nice!
Probably wouldn't stay here again if I had a choice, but for one night we survived!

If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. The furnicular that is in the courtyard of this ill-conceived "hotel" might be convenient, but if you like sleeping in a hot room with an open window, no air conditioning, no fan, and no shade so the people across the courtyard can watch you undress, and you like listening to the racket of people talking and the furnicular going off every 5 minutes--- then this is your place. Adding to the quaint charm, mold in the bathroom, dented lamp shades, and I am not exaggerating---they actually placed a damp and wet comforter on the bed. Oh, and you will need to use a key to lock your room from the inside. How hard could it be to actually replace that with something more modern and safe?

The bathroom looked like a bottle of pepto bismol pink had exploded in there. Don't expect anything but the absolute basics with this hotel and the standards are minimal to say the least. I have traveled to 17 countries and this might just be the worst hotel I've stayed in. If you are looking for cheap, then you get will exactly what you pay for. My recommendation, spend a bit more to actually get something better or just buy a tent.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

Recently stayed one night here when passing through Lugano. Found it a convenient, reasonably priced (for the area) place to stay. The funicular did not bother us that much; for those sensitive to noise, it may not work. Weather was mild when we were there, and a very quiet table fan was a nice breeze. Room was very basic, no frills, basic TV, but that's all we needed. Shower was tiny but good. Towels/toiletries were cheap, but for one night, no problem, we used our own toiletries. Breakfast not included, so we walked to McDonald's for cappuccinos and rolls. The location is great, just down steps (or funicular) from train station. We didn't know about the funicular so got slightly confused finding the hotel at first, but the location is super-convenient to lakefront, sights of Lugano, plus easy access back to the train station, all walking.
