We stayed in 2012. The hotel overlooks Lake Lugano, and is situated on the 'promenade' which runs around the Lugano side of the lake. There is traffic along this road but the noise is not intrusive, and overnight the street is very quiet. Our room had beautiful views of the lake and was very comfortable. The bathroom was spacious. I would class this hotel as ageing gracefully with friendly, service driven staff, who make you feel very special. A satisfying breakfast was included and served in the lovely dining room, also with stunning views. There is seating and a spa on the roof for the use of hotel patrons.

Across the road from the hotel are hire boats, ferry service, tour operators and of course the beautiful lake. Behind the hotel is the traffic free shopping area and large cobblestone plaza. This quaint part of town has many reasonably priced cafes and restaurants. There is also a supermarket and post office.

The hotel is within easy walking distance of beautiful churches, city sights and the lovely botanical gardens. There is a tourist office very close to the hotel which runs free walking tours of the town. The gentleman who guided our walk was very informative and we found the tour an excellent way to find out about the history of Lugano. The tourist office also has a number of paid tour options and brochures with ideas for self guided walks along one of the many trails in Lugano. We also downloaded a number of suggested local walks from the internet.

We loved our stay at Hotel Walter au Lac and hope very much to return.

Room Tip: Try to book a room advertised with views - they are well worth the extra cost

After spending three days in Vernazza, Italy, one of the five villages of the Cinque Terre, we took the train to Lugano, Switzerland. And the contrast between the two places seemed glaring.

Vernazza is small, intimate, friendly and flirtatious. Fun loving and fun seeking, the locals seemed to live an unpretentious good life. Our flat was right on the piazza above the cafe and had no air conditioning. So our shuttered windows were always open. The smells of grilled fish and the sounds of lively Italian banter would waft into our apartment. And since the locals enjoyed eating and drinking till the wee hours of the morning, we may not fall asleep 3:30 a.m., lying in bed, feeling both amused and abused by the situation.

Lugano, in contrast, seemed ritzy and glitzy in an understated, Swiss way. The city and the lake are jaw-droppingly beautiful. There’s not a speck of trash to be found. The ferries, the trains, and the buses all run on time. It’s a very beautiful and a very rich city. So I shouldn’t have been surprised that our bill for pizza and beer was over 82 francs.

Since eating out is expensive here, we stayed at the Hotel Walter au Lac. It includes a breakfast buffet. I couldn’t have been more pleased with the hotel or with the breakfast.

The Hotel Walter is a gracious, old hotel. To economize, we had the family room. Actually, the family room was two bedrooms and a bath, plenty of room for the four of us.

We had bought the Swiss travel pass so we spent a day touring the lake by boat and taking the funicular up to Mount Bre. You can catch the ferry directly across from the Hotel Walter. It was an affordable, laid back day.

Room Tip: For families: The family room. Actually, the family room consists of two bedrooms and a bath, plent...

We arrived in Lugano without hotel reservations. We checked this hotel and found a very friendly and helpful young lady, Laura. She showed my husband the room and we booked in. The location is absolutely perfect for getting around town. It is right near the main square and several good restaurants. The city tour train and sightseeing boats are mere meters away. The rooms are good sized, plenty of closet space and very clean. The continental breakfast is included and a very nice selection.

Room Tip: If a balcony room is available, it is definitely worth the couple of extra dollars.

I was having trouble selecting a hotel in Lugano. The really nice hotels seemed sort of isolated with not much in the way of restaurants and shopping nearby. The reviews of the Hotel Walter (at the time I booked) were very mixed. Then I noticed that the Hotel Walter has a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom Junior Suite for 499 Swiss Francs (CHF) per night. That translates into $549 USD. This is a lot of money but if you are two couples traveling together or a family with some children it becomes more reasonable. The room also had a living room and a huge private terrace with a gorgeous view of the lake. We did not use the second bedroom but it was nice to have two bathrooms. The master bathroom has a tub/shower combination AND a stand alone shower stall. It also has a bidet. The second bathroom has a shower stall. If you decide to do a boat tour on Lake Lugano you go out the front door of the hotel, cross the street and turn left. It's about a 3 minute walk to the ticket office. The hotel's breakfast was good. Also the hotel has it's own bar and restaurant although we liked to go the restaurants in a nearby plaza. From the front door of the hotel, turn left and the first plaza to the left will have several restaurants and lots of shopping. We did take one boat ride, but we never needed a taxi until we needed to go to the train station. Don't miss the Park! I felt very safe in Lugano. There was a police car parked at the entrance to the plaza most of the time.

I would like to make a comment about some of the amenities in the room. There is only instant coffee in the room so if you want 'real coffee' you have to go to the breakfast room or the restaurant. Also the shampoo was in little packets (2 per bathroom) that were hard to open and there was no body lotion. I would think they could upgrade the toiletries for that category of room!

Enjoy Lugano! It is a lovely city!

Dear guest. Thank you for your visit to our hotel. We are happy that you enjoyed your stay in our house. It is our wish that our guests feel as a part of a big family.

In each room there’s a kettle available. Instant coffee and tea are complimentary. Although it isn’t possible to make “real coffee” with the kettle, there are many restaurants and bars in the area. However, we are now considering getting an Espresso machine for our guests in the Junior Suite.

For the shampoo we chose an environmentally-friendly package and a product which includes shampoo and shower soap (2 in 1). Of course on request it’s possible to have more than 2 per bathroom. Other toiletries, like body lotion, hand cream, hairspray, are not included in the complimentary items, because the Hotel Walter au lac is a 3 stars hotel.

We hope to see you soon again

Very clean, family run hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful - including the owner who helped with a question on Lugano itself. Views from hotel over the lake are second to none, and windows are double glazed so traffic noise not an issue and with air conditioning a good nights sleep is guaranteed. Husband thought breakfast choice was limited, but fine for me. Excellent location for both lake and shopping. Use the little red arrow tourist train - great way to get around Lugano.

We only had the time to stay 2 nights here recently and I only wish we could have stayed longer. This hotel is in an enviable position on the lakeside and 2 minutes walk from the town centre. The staff are all friendly and welcoming, the lovely breakfast room offers plenty of choice alongside wonderful lake views. We had a furnished lake view balcony room on the fourth floor which had safe, mini bar, air conditioning, plenty of wardrobe space and hangers, well equipped bathroom and everything else we required. The car park is a five minute walk away with a good discount from the hotel. Lugano is a beautiful place to visit and when we have the chance to return hotel Walter au lac will be our first choice.
