In some places around the globe, it is all about location. Lugano is one such place, and Walter du lac makes the most of it, including charging an exorbitant price for 3 star facilities. I booked for 6 nights, and even then did not get any concession from the standard tariff. The first room (Room 58) I was given was real tiny with an even smaller bathroom. The bathtub was a joke. It was so narrow and deep that once could neither stand in it to take a shower nor lie in it to have a bath. Plus, the shower head was placed in such an awkward position, it was impossible to use the shower whether standing or sitting or crouching. Nonetheless, you cannot get a better located hotel in Lugano.
Any way, the next day the room was changed with no fuss, and this one (Room 47) was more spacious, had a larger bathroom and a shower stall. However, it had a quirk. The sink and the shower could not be used at the same time. Also, the water pressure in the shower was really low. However, surprisingly for Europe, the bed was very comfortable. I guess the Swiss are different from the rest of Europe in this issue as well. They like firm mattresses and pillows as all civilized people do.
The breakfast is in a stunning sun drenched lake facing room, and one could sit there for hours sipping the wonderful cappucinno or caffe. The breakfast itself is not much to write about. Fresh fruits yes, but no fresh juice. Yogurt was super market quality. Limited cereals, and surprisingly for Swiss hospitality, no muesli. The breads were the most disappointing.
A very disappointing thing was the 5 franc charge for using the Jacuzzi on the terrace. This feature is widely mentioned on the web site, but no mention that there is a charge for it. For the steep prices for the room, it is sad that they have to nickel and dime the guests for this. Lastly, the staff are genuinely warm and hospitable both in Reception, breakfast room and housekeeping. Hats off to them.
Sorry, one more. On Saturday when I arrived in the evening, there was some kind of a basketball game going on at full blast with commentary and music right next door in the parking lot. As soon as it ended, another ear deafening gig started a few meters away that continued well into the night. It was enough to think twice whether we wanted to stay in this hotel. Thankfully, this nonsense did not recur in the next few days. I think the Lugano city as well as the hotel industry should think twice before allowing or encouraging such noise pollution in one of the prettiest parts of Switzerland.
