Hotels are expensive in Switzerland! Then again, most things are in this country and hotel are no exception. Despite searching long and hard on the internet, the best rate that we found was via the Swiss Tourism office. We had to do it the old fashion way and book via the tourism office. We paid directly by credit card to the office and they gave us an email confirmation which we showed to the hotel. The rate was a bit more than £100 for a triple room (two single beds with a very bad roll-away cott) which is bit more expensive than a hotel room in Tokyo which includes breakfast!
Otherwise, the hotel is in an OK location but is about a 15-20 minute walk to the major 'downtown' of Lugano and about the same distance to the lake. There is not much in the vicinity of the hotel so you will be doing quite a bit of walking. There are some buses but it always seemed easier to walk. You can also walk from the train station which is also about 15 minutes away.
The hotel has an '80's feel to it and is decorated similarly. It doesn't appear to be family run, but it seems quite casual as employees don't really appear to be uniformed. The receptionist reminded me of a big Italian mama who was welcoming but not terribly proficient. There was a lot of concern that I didn't have a 'voucher' from the tourism office despite having an email to confirm that it had been paid and the hotel was to bill the tourism office. It wasn't dealt in a very proficient manner and it required two trips back to the reception from my room to sort it out.
The lobby is modest and has a small bar downstairs. Everything is brown and orange tiles. There appears to be some meeting rooms for some low level corporate functions. There is also a lonely stand alone PC from the 1990's in the lounge area and it is about 5CHF for 10 minutes or some rip off price.
The rooms are nothing special and very simple. Our room looked out into a parking lot and a bike shop. The room was very clean but this is typical for Switzerland. The bathroom was immaculate and had an interesting cut away shower. The beds were OK, the roll away bed was terrible and collapsed just sitting on it. The TV was just tiny and there were very few furnishings in the room at all.
Breakfast was very meager and in a sunny, simple breakfast room just off the reception. It consisted of some OK bread but a modest selection of cold cuts, cheese and some jams. There was also some cereals and nothing hot.
After check out, we asked to leave our bags behind and were just told to leave it in the meeting room. Since 'it's Switzerland' we thought that was fine and it was in the end.
Overall, a very, very simple hotel which would be just great if it was half the price paid but it was poor value overall.
