“Train enthusiast with mobility needs”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

The close proximity of the hotel to the train station and the embarkation point for navigation of the lake are a major part of this hotel's attraction. Both the trains and the boats which connect the many lakeside towns are totally accessible as ramps and lifts are provided. The easy ramped access and automatic doors to a small lift to reception make this hotel an excellent choice for the mobility impaired. There is a hill to/from the train station but not too great an incline for the carer/pusher! The hotel staff were extremely helpful and courteous, even telephoning the Swiss Mobility Helpline for us to make sure that our lift assistance onto the connecting train from Domodossola to Brig was arranged. The restaurant/pizzeria situated below the hotel offered a good menu including seasonal specialities. A main course and a glass of wine was economical by Swiss standards. The bathroom featured a walk in shower and the twin bedded room was equipped with an electrically operated rise and fall bed should the disabled traveller require it. A small balcony outside the room where an aperitivo could be taken gave lovely views of the mountains. Small refrigerated minibar useful for cold drink storage and it was a short walk to the local supermarket for replenishment! Level access around the lake enabled visits to cafes and the beautiful camellia park. For us this was an optimal hotel choice.

The hotel was very close to the lake, to the Piazza Grande and to the train station. Was quiet except for some street noise on our first night there. Highly recommended to explore the wonderful Locarno area.

Hotel was very short walk to lake, Piazza Grande and train station. Clean, comfortable and quiet - except for some noise from the street the first night of our stay. Recommended.

The hotel conditions overall are fair but I would recommend to do soon some urgent renovations works in the rooms/bathrooms and public areas.

There is carpet everywhere and by consequence there was not fresh smell allover the property.

The breakfast choice is good but some staff at the reception (especially one young lady with dark long hair) was not very helpful and polite.

The room rates are fair but they are not flexible even if you do long stays... if they want a regular client who stays 1 month per year to come back, they should at least apply a minimum discount or offer some extra amenities.

During summer in Locarno don't expect to hear Italian... there are plenty tourists from the German part of Switzerland that spend holidays here and this hotel is no exception.

Below the hotel there is a godo pizzeria but next to it a very old-fashioned bar...

Room Tip: ask for top floors with street view with balcony

4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2008

The Hotel Pestalozzi has a lot of things going for it, but it is dated with a capital "D". My wife boiled it down to the single phrase, "Welcome to 1984." But, that is the only thing you can really find to complain about. Hence, the four stars.

The hotel is in a great location. It is just off the main drag along the lake. But because it is not a lakefront property, that means the view of the water is all but obstructed. No worries as it is just a few minute walk to the water.

The front desk staff spoke some English, but we found it easier to communicate in French. They were friendly and helpful.

Our room was simple, but of decent size. You really did feel like you had walked through a time warp back to the mid-80s. The style of the furniture, the bedding and the bathroom tiles all screamed of a decade long past. Although it was dated, it was immaculately clean. Very clean, and well maintained. The biggest drawback was the lack of air conditioning. In a climate like Ticino, this can be a bit of a problem. Fortunately for us, though, a storm moved in the first evening to cool things off. On a really hot day, it might be pretty uncomfortable in the room.

Breakfast was pretty much middle of the road. There were cereals, yogurts, cheese, what looked like some sort of chunky baloney (yikes!) and various breads. Plenty of options, just nothing to get too excited about. I was able to score a cappucino the first morning, but told that only black coffee was available on the second. Confusing.

"Value" is not a word I would use to describe the rate. We paid CHF 199/night, plus CHF 16/night for parking. Although the parking was reasonable (it is under the hotel, so very convenient), the room rate seemed way out of line for a firmly three-star place with no A/C. But, given the immaculate cleanliness and the location, I can give it four stars without hesitation. I would, however, prefer to stay in Ascona if I find myself back in the region in the future.

  • Liked — Location, cleanliness.
  • Disliked — Dated décor and furniture, no A/C.
