“Upmarket hostel for an up market town.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2011

Renovated this year the hostel is one a wooden palace. I stayed here with a young family who were well catered for with a toy room in sight of the bar and a field out the back.

It's a bus ride to town but there is also a push chair friendly hike from the hostel through the woods to adjoining villages.

This hostel is basically perfect for a hostel.

The hostel was great, brand new, rooms are great and comfortable, the restaurant of the hostel, was very good, it made a good pasta, and good local fish!
breakfast was a bit poor but ok.

the atmosphere was a bit cold, it didn't feel really like a hostell, it felt much more like a hotel.

Staff was very frinedly and helpful.
Location is not the best but you can reach it easely from the train station walking along tha lake's path in 20 min. or taking the bus 9.

I'd anyhow suggest it!

Stayed here 31/7/10 for one night. Booked by Internet on Swiss hostels website. Paid CHF 49 in a dormitory, including breakfast and evening meal (only option available), plus CHF 1.50 tax, less CHF 3.45 refund due to construction work.

Located on the South side of the lake, ie the opposite side of the lake to the railway station. It is about a 30 minute walk along an easy lakeside path, or there is a bus from the station to the hostel (which I did not use).

I was in a 4 bed dormitory, with washbasin. It was spacious and light, probably the best hostel room I had on this trip. There are lockers, one for each person, which are operated by a refundable CHF 2 coin. Good showers, separate from the room.

There are several common areas, and a room for Internet, so even if busy you should be able to find a quiet spot if you want.

Breakfast available from 7.00. Standard buffet. Includes cereal, ham, cheese, juice, hot drinks. Generally a good breakfast.

Evening meal included in overnight rate, 3/4 courses, generally good.

There is no kitchen for self catering, as was the case in all the HI hostels I stayed at on this trip to Switzerland, which I found a drawback, and different from my last visit.

There has been major renovation throughout 2010 - virtually completely rebuilding the hostel. It is closed for most of this year, and was open briefly during the peak summer period which is when I was there. This is resulting in a modern hostel with good facilities, and an appealing feeling of airiness and light in it. It was very busy, including many groups of young people. Overall I liked it, based on this short visit.

In the ritzy town of St. Moritz, where even the unglamorous things have glamorous prices, the Youth Hostel is an affordable option to stay and participate in the skiing, nightlife and staring at the bizarre behavior of people with endless money.

The hostel is as traditional "youth hostel" as I've ever stayed at, with each room containing several bunk beds, all co-ed and with people you do not know. Communal toilettes and showers.

A large cafeteria serves up the most cost-effective spartan breakfast I have seen in a long time (and that's saying something considering the standard dusty muesli, fruit, yogurt and cold cuts of meat offer I find throughout Switzerland, Germany, Austria. Breakfast included orange juice so sour it made you THINK about how it's from concentrate, slices of white bread (which I spread with jam or nutella), dusty muesli cereal and weak coffee water.

The great thing about this place is that, when all is said and done, it is a reasonable walk to the popular hillside center of town (St. Moritz Dorf) from the hostel (St. Moritz Bad), probably about 15-20min. At night during winter, you can even get your thrills by walking across the frozen lake! (Follow the well worn trails across the snowy ice... near the stream, the lake is NOT frozen!) Well worth it. Easy enough to stumble home late from the nightclubs in the "dorf", or easy enough to stretch your legs after dropping your ski gear for the day at the hostel and heading into town in those comfy shoes for some drinking and dancing.

You won't feel clean. You won't feel rested. But you'll play the pauper as part of the crowd in St. Moritz.

We stayed 2- nights at Youth Hostel in month of may. since it is bit off-time for the ski season, over all there was no rush at the hostel or in the town. Felt staff was bit laid back, Rooms were nice anc cozy. They served filling breakfast though it was off season, But kitchen was closed for lunch and dinners and they do not allow self cooking in kitchen as some of the other swill youth hostels do, Met people from different parts of the world and all were happy with the general set up there, so it is definitely a favorite place for international visitors. The nearest bus stop is about 10 minutes walk from the hostel so it can be tough to walk in extreme cold weathers. There is a small strip mall with few Italian restaurants near the bus stop, Food was good but over all too expensive , not worth the money.

  • Liked — neat and clean housekeeping, huge lounge
  • Disliked — 10 mins walk from bus-stop no other mode of transport to this place.

My main impression of this hostel is how BIG it is -I had never stayed
in such a large hostel, it has about six separate dining rooms and 3
sports equipment storage rooms. It is also an obviously upmarket hostel,
much more expensive than the average (even for Switzerland), but the
food (specially the quantity of it), the small size dormitories and the
general facility do justify the price. In this respect the Youth Hostel
is very much in keeping with its surroundings, because St Moritz itself
has been built in a grandiose scale and is very posh. The majority of
the guests are Italian (or Italian-speakers, anyway). Again,
this also applies to the whole of St Moritz generally, where Italian
seems to have gained the status of a second language. Location is in the
outskirts of St Moritz Bad, so it is not particularly convenient or easily accessible, although they are very diplomatic about it in their advertising. However St Moritz' excellent indoor swimming pool (Hallenbad) _is_ just a few minutes' walk away and well worth a visit (or several). Overall I didn't like this hostel, the reason being it's so large that it feels soulless and
not homely at all, e.g. the concourse communicating the various dining
rooms feels a bit like the London Underground, there were so many
people walking up and down at any time; or, the room where the reading
corner is had so many people that the air in it can smell positively stuffy. No self-catering kitchen is available.
