“Little gem in Wengen”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2009

We stayed in Wengen last year and stumbled accross this lovely hotel for dinner and decided we must come back and stay so we did. Just got back and loved every minute. We had a fantastic south facing room with big terrace overlooking the village and mountains. The highlight of our stay being the food, my partner is a chef and after our experience for dinner here last year we were excited to come back. The menu was different each of our 5 nights offering fine dine french classics, everything cooked to perfection and presented so well. The soups were also to die for. I am not a huge cheese fan unlike my partner who enbraces the smelliest but with the help of Suzanna we found a selection which were perfect. Suzanna was the main presence each evening and made us feel right at home and her attention to detail and aproachable manner were key in making our stay so memorable. After dinner you can sit in the lounge and play a selection of board games while drinking some more fantastic swiss wine.
We cant wait to go back next year.

We spent three nights at this splendid hotel the first week of January 2009. It was a tough choice with all the options but we were sure we made the right pick upon arrival. Close to train station overlooking the street. They'll pick up your bags at the train when you arrive. Rene the owner and ex ski team great still works ever day and night and opened our wine at dinner. The rooms are decent swiss rooms for this area of Switzerland. It's all worth it when you have the dinner though. Beautiful antique filled room lit by candlelight. Set menu that was great, even for a couple of foodies like us. Large extensive wine list. We wandered around at night and looked into the other restaraunts and they don't even come close to the ambience at this place. The chef would make the rounds towards the end of dinner, which was a nice touch. Great service all the way around. Wengen is a great small village and a great base for all the alpine thrills you may have.

When there are so many rave reviews about a hotel it is difficult to add more but the Schonegg is so good it just needs to be shouted about.

My partner and I stayed there during the last week in August (fortunately for us the best week weather wise of the whole Swiss summer) and we just couldn't find any fault. We chose the Schonegg after reading reviews on Trip Advisor and it was a toss up between the this and the Beausite Park. Having been I'm absolutely certain we made the right decision. I'm sure the Beausite is lovely but it is a bit out of town and looked a little too "corporate" for my taste. The Schonegg is more rustic Swiss and in a perfect central location in the town.

We were met at the station and taken to the hotel in a little electric buggy (Wengen is car free) and were made welcome the moment we walked through the door. We were personally shown to our room by the Manageress. The room was simply furnished but spotlessly clean and very comfortable and made up twice a day. There are no TVs in the rooms (perfect for us) but there are two lounges with TVs for those who really want one.

Much has already been said about the owner, Rene Berthot, and the staff at the hotel. I can only echo what has been said before - the service was friendly and excellent. They were always genuinely keen to ensure everything was perfect.

When we booked the only choice of meals was half board. I don't normally like this as previous experience has shown that the residents get second class food compared to the paying restaurant guests so I had said to my partner that we would eat out on a couple of evenings as a treat. Well - after the first evenings culinary treat we changed this plan. We simply couldn't have eaten better anywhere else. The food was divine and the chef made a point of visiting every table each evening to make sure we were happy.

Our only complaint was that the week was over too soon. Can't wait to go back in the winter. We were in room 9 on the second floor - thoroughly recommend it. Just please don't book it when we plan to return!
