“Extremely friendly and customer focussed hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2011

We travelled to Wengen in September 2011 and after a flight and 4 train journeys we were delighted to find a porter from the hotel at the station to meet us with his electric cart to carry us and our luggage to the Belvedere.
A nice cold platter awaited us in our room which was very welcome after our long journey.
The hotel itself is a beautiful example of an Edwardian chalet with all the wonderful original wood panelling and light fittings on the lower floor.
Upstairs however was much more modern and in excellent repair with a recent uplift being obvious.
The hotel was clean and beautifully cared for and a pleasure to return to after our walking trips.
Our room was 410 and had a fabulous view of the mountains through two double opening windows, we even sat in the rooms armchairs in the evening sun and got sunburned which has got to be a first!!
The room and bathroom were very nice and again in excellent order and the furniture appeared new and of a very good standard.
The staff at the hotel from Manager to maid were exceptional in the level of customer care and help that they provided us and they were always interested in chatting to find out if we were enjoying your holiday.
Ontop of the excellent customer care we were given complimentary packed lunches and afternoon tea which was available to Inghams customers.
About the only place that will soon be in need of redecoration seemed to be the dining room, which will soon be in need of a repaint, new curtains and some pictures on the walls.
We were half board customers and breakfast was excellent with all sorts of nice things to eat from cereal museli and yoghurt, to a hot choice such as bacon and eggs. There was also a cold choice of cheese and ham with a huge assortment of bread, rolls or crosisants.
Again the dining room waiters were exceptional in their attention to detail and care of the diners.
However where there is need for improvement was at dinner.
The food was perfectly adequate and on one occasion excellent (Steak cooked beautifully) however for those who delight in higher quality standards of food, dinner was a tad dissapointing.
But if plain guest house style food is not an issue for you then you will be entirely delighted.
This really was the only negative point for us and that aside we would reccommend the hotel to other people we know without hesitation.
As for noise from other bedrooms, commented on in other reviews, well the hotel was extremely quiet when we went and we certainly did not hear any other conversations, noise or other from our neighbours.
We liked the Belvedere and we would definitely consider it again if we go back to Wengen and especially so if the quality of food during dinner is uplifted.
We hope you find our review helpful, we have tried to be extremely accurate in the description we have provided.

Room Tip: 410 Mountain facing and a suntrap in the afternoon.

August stay, front room balcony

This historic hotel has nice communal areas and a charming exterior. The rooms were large (but a really unfortunate color orange) I could not discover anywhere else when walking the town where you would find a better view that is not right next to the loud train tracks. The large size of the hotel means that group tours are often here, which shows some wear and tear on the staff, unlike smaller, family-run hotels or inns.

PROS – good location away from the noisy tracks, great views, large rooms with sitting area, large dining room and patio with view, hospitable front staff, antique décor on main level, good bathroom, clean, OK breakfast (multiple breads, cheese slices, cured meats, boiled eggs, juices, marmalades, whole fruits, granola and cereals), nice balcony, had elevator. Opening the shutters provides some privacy on the balcony from the next room over.

CONS – crazy, ugly room decor. The antique wardrobe in our room was unusable, but I saw others in rooms that looked fine. The breakfast was OK, but the 25chf buffet dinner was terrible (excepting the salad bar and cheeses, which were very fresh). I wish I had read these reviews regarding the food first, and gone elsewhere. The dining staff was curt at all meals, and seemed put-out when you’d rather sit by the windows than at the table they “reserved” for you.

Surprises in General – no lifts at all other hotels, soap provided (no lotion/conditioners), some hotels (not this one) didn’t provide wash-cloths, no air-conditioning was fine for us, no bugs, all beds were twins pushed together with no efforts to “seam” them, feather duvet covers were too hot for my husband, the feather pillows were too flat for me, clothes dried fast with no humidity or drying racks

If you’re using RICK STEVES or have seen his video 1) He looooves Gimmelwald, but it was too small and rural for us. Murren and Wengen were just right fr us. 2) The path up to Murren from Gimmelwald is steep 3) There is no such thing as leisurely biking (the trail up from Lauterbrunnen to Murren is quite steep & the trail from Gimmelwald to the valley is treacherous even for experienced mountain bikers) 4) The 2hr hike down from Shilthorn to Bern (and beyond) is straight down and a knee buster. 5) We agreed with him that Interlaken and Grindelwald were too touristy, and would not even recommend a friends go there. 6) Luaterburnnen and the Valley were less so, but still busier and louder.

Hallways and stairs not well lighted - even daytime. There's a "dank" atmosphere to this place. The 1/2 pension plan (breakfast and dinner) was over cooked bland food kept over a sterno for hours. Variety and quality of selections offered was very poor. One nights desert - a type of puddind was the next nights filling for the jelly roll desert! Like no one noticed.
I was denied a cup of coffee with the explanation "the bar is on the other end of the hall and it would get cold too soon" For some miraculous reason coffee was available the next morning. Vacations are to enjoy. Don't bother with this Adam's Family house and unhelpful staff.

Room Tip: It was my fist stay (and last)

Just left this hotel August 4 and while we enjoyed many things about it: good location, incredible views from our 4th floor room, there are problems. The walls are paper thin, you can hear word for word what your neighbors are saying. Plus like many hotels in Switzerland, there are many families with small children. Our first night we had a family of five next door, their youngest was in the hallway yelling when we arrived with the mother powerless to do anything. I asked to move to another room but the hotel was booked. Then we were awakened at 3 AM two mornings ago by a crying baby. After an hour of this we finally pounded on the wall and it stopped. So if you are lucky and you have quiet neighbors, you will like this hotel but if unlucky like we were, good luck sleeping. Also, if anyone is on their deck, you will hear absolutely every thing, chairs moving, voices etc... The hotel is not air conditioned and it was quite warm while we were there so we had to have the doors open to the deck which added to the noise problems. Also, they allow smoking on the decks so not only did we have a crying baby next door, the mother smoked. This caused us to close our doors several times as well.
This hotel is not cheap so it was disappointing especially considering the view we had, you lie in bed and all you see our mountains and blue sky, it is quite amazing
Last comment and it is minor: they never replaced the bath soap in five days and the towels are the quality you would use to wash your car but not a big deal.

Have stayed at this hotel 3 times in the last 4 years over February half term and always been very happy. This year however the restaurant staff had all changed and were not their usual helpful selves. The food as usual was very good and plentiful, The room was very clean. The main problem however was with other guests. There were a large number of family groups, where the children were very poorly behaved and ran riot up and down the corridors, and at meal times wandered in and out of the dining room. I understand that the main problem was the parents letting them behave in this way, but the hotel staff did not at any time ask them to sit down. It spoiled the holiday for us and we will not be returning next year..

Hotel located just away from the main street (5-10 mins walk from station). All staff were very friendly and helpful. It may not be a 5 star but it has charm and is quirky. Room was clean and spacious with a modern bathroom and excellent shower.

Evening meals were hot buffet. Plenty of choice. Had no problem personally, but then I'm not too fussy. Breakfast had sufficient choice of cereals, breads etc

Celebrated my birthday whilst on holiday, and the hotel had a cake for me (after dinner), which was a lovely thoughtful touch.

Wengen is a lovely town and a great base for many walks - all signposted (if you go in Spring/Summer). So much to do and see.

We will be back and the Belvedere will be our first choice (and we hope to see the hotel dog in reception!)

Lovely hotel, very friendly and helpful staff. Manageress tried to speak to all the guests every night at dinner, which was great. Variety of good food every night & we had a wonderful view from our table.
Worth the extra money for the south facing view from our room.

Hopefully be back another year.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a south facing room, its worth every penny.
