“A Palace of a Hotel . . .”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

I traveled to Wengen for a 7 day ski trip in March 2013 and enjoyed every aspect of this hotel. The location is second to none. The rooms are well sized, comfortable, clean and well maintained. I had a room in the new annex of the hotel with two reasonable sized balconies on the 3rd floor. There are great views to the south overlooking courtyard and train station with mountains in the background. Stunning :)

The shower room was small containing just the toilet and shower cubical. At 6 foot tall and on the larger size the cubical was small but manageable. The shower head is low but you can hand hold. Some of the fixtures, soap holder in particular are in convenient places for the fitter but not if your in there trying to have a shower without hitting your elbows on anything.

The room had a wall hung LCD TV with 100's of cable channels in every language. The number English spoken channels is limited but the package also has a huge choice of radio channels including the main BBC channels.

The room was lacking in any tea/coffee facilities which was a little disappointing .

The beds were fantastic. Austrian twins with great linens. The pillows weer a little flat for me but housekeeping delivered two more on request. Anyone not familiar with Austrian twin beds should be aware. These are larger single beds pushed together to make a larger double but there's a small gap between the beds. You get your own single size duvet cover as well. Austrian twins can be easily separated should you want to create two singles but keep in mind that the surrounding furniture or headboards my limit the distance by which you can separate the beds.

Location wise the hotel is well positioned opposite the train station and 60 steps to the Mannlichen Cable Car or children's ski school. All of the shops, bars and restaurants are close by but the hotel remains quiet and well insulated from outside noise.

The hotel has a good restaurant, menu and wine list. Prices are typically Swiss. The main dining room is large and can get busy at peak times. The staff are polite, helpful and speak many languages. I had a half board deal and sat down every morning to a typical breakfast buffet with tea/coffee and juices. The evening meals were based around a starter then soup or salad, a main meal and desert. A bottle of house wine, very good selections, coast ca 40 CHF. All in a great selection of food and drink. Tap water is FREE but only if you order a wine of beer beverage, otherwise a small fee of 3CHF per jug is charged.

The hotel also has a great little bar, meeting place, coffee shop and a sublet pasta franchise.

The staff are polite and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble and they work very hard to ensure that your stay is as comfortable as can be.

The ski/boot/bike room is a handy feature with lots of space both heated and unheated with separate entry/exit is great.

The hotel offers a full range of spa treatments at reasonable prices. A fitness room full of modern equipments and a coffee terrace.

Skiing wise the choice is fantastic. For the competent skier I recommend the all area ski pass. The choice for skiing is huge with opportunities to go off piste at pretty much any point. The lifts are OK, using the train works but can be slow. The people are very friendly and the on slope restaurant choice is varied.

I highly recommend this hotel. If you found this review helpful please click on the helpful button. If you'd like to chat more or ask questions please send me a message.

Thank you for reading and I wish you an enjoyable trip. JJ

Room Tip: Ask for a high room in the new annex facing south . . .

Form the outside this place looks like a grand hotel, although from the inside it has a style of a travel lodge.... although don't be put off by this, it's just a bit or a surprise when you walk in !

The location is A1 and is a snowballs through from the main lift, the ski store and boot room are located at street level so it's straight out to the lift in the mornings.

The Spa and wellness area is the best bit.... The salt pool which is as warm as a bath is amazing, as is the 'adults' (due to the nakedness) spa area which includes a steam room and sauna, along with a ICE cold dip pool and a Luke warm dip pool... There is a fantastic chill out zone, which unless you search for you won't find... Head out the door and up the stairs for a panoramic view and loungers.

The rooms are clean and functional... food in the restaurant was surprisingly good and service great.

All in all a great hotel in a great location, with a great spa...

PS... The only thing missing is a boot warmer in the boot store !!

Room Tip: Try and get one with a balcony with a view over the station, the sun set was amazing !

Having stayed in Wengen many times, we decided to go for a new hotel this year and chose the Victoria Lauberhorn. On the plus side - great location, ski to door (literally), breakfast excellent. Room was small but very clean with good view. A few points that were of concern though - you have to pay for tap water in the hotel restaurant, the swimming pool is very busy and badly managed / controlled, for dinner in the main restaurant it feels a but like a canteen with courses being brought out in big batches and the staff are rushing around as if they cant keep up, only one choice of main course for dinner which can be a problem. Overall an 'ok' hotel with some plus points, but I have stayed in better hotels in Wengen (e.e. Silberhorn).

Room Tip: South facing rooms have the bext views, but north facing rooms can also overlook the village which i...

We stayed here for Christmas on a deal that included breakfasts and evening meals. It is very conveniently located, directly by the train station and metres away from the cable car. The hotel is immaculately cleaned throughout and the spa area includes a fabulous pool and panoramic rest room with green tea always available. The food was very good and we enjoyed a great 7 course Christmas dinner. The only downside for me was the decor, the vast dining room lacks any sort of style, high ceilings, bare pale walls and a couple of poster prints were the only feature. The communal areas are not very inviting; more of a place to perch. Would love big comfy settees and a cosy ambiance. Staff were friendly & efficient, ski storage is in the cellar and this can be accessed from outside with a special magnetic key for hotel residents. Ski passes can be bought at reception. Will return but next time on B&B basis so that we can try other restaurant options. Free Wifi throughout. On our last day when all slopes were closed because of strong winds, we would like to have had tea or coffee throughout the day - no catering was available and there's no kettles in the bedrooms.

Room Tip: Flat screen TV's in each room but only BBC Entertainment available in English. As there's f...

Most of what needs saying has already been written by other reviewers, so I'll just reinforce the key points. The rooms are generally on the smallish side, but are kept very clean and fresh. The beds are very comfortable and have nice fresh sheets and cosy duvets. The Wi-fi on our last visit was still a bit flaky and could do with a boost. Its OK on the lower floors though. The spa is excellent and includes a rack with bubbles and a seating area with bubbles, river rapids and a decent sized swimming area. In the ski season most people use it in the late afternoon.

The meals are very good value. Even if you have the soup or pate you can, if you want, still have as much from the salad bar as you wish. The staff are very friendly and very obliging. The only down side is the £3 water jug, but this is CH. I would have liked to have seen some Swiss food on the menu, but sadly there were no bratwurst or schnitzel! Instead of eating in the hotel dining room, you can have a SFr20 voucher if you wish to spend in the restaurant, where you can get a schnitzel.

Getting there is very easy, straight off the train from Lauterbrunnen into the hotel.

Its a particularly good place to stay if one of a couple is a non-skier, as the hotel's facilities are good, and if the non-skier buys a walkers pass, they can use the trains and gondolas to meet up with family and friends at all the key eating areas on the mountains. That pass is alos good for a trip to Wilderswil and Interlaken. It's also not to expensive to buy an add on from Interlaken to Spiez and Thun, both very nice towns with good shops.

Going skiing is also very easy, but make sure you get out of the hotel by 0800 hours at the latest otherwise there will be a queue for the gondola to Mannlichen and the train to Kleine Scheidegg. Going down to Lauterbrunnen for Winteregg and Murren isn't usually so bad.

The ski area itself is great with a wide variety of runs from Blue through to Black. I'd particularly recommend lunch at Allmendhubel at the top of the funicular (steps train) up from Murren (great schnitzel) and the apple fritters at Brandegg on the blue run down to Grindelwald from KS.

Room Tip: The view from the rooms which overlook the valley is one of the wonders of the world. Don't wor...

My partner, my mother..., my cousin and her kids all booked the hotel's 5 night for price of 4 package in Jul this year for the Xmas 2012 break.
Been here three times before in summer and winter. Not dissapointed, its all still a great hotel with wellness centre, sauna, pool, jacuzzi, masssive whirlpool and chill room after your sauna overlooking the mountains at sunset. A great way to spend Xmas 2012.
With over 250 guests staying we had a great time and the meals were great and filling.
Watch out though, if you dont have wine with your meal theyll charge you £3 for a jug of water.
Just bring down some water in a plastic bootle in your handbag!
Otherwise a great stay and only 120m from lift and 100m from train station.
Enjoy.
James
