“Hotel Baren Wengen”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2009

We stayed at the Hotel Baren in the summer of 2009 and were very happy with the accomodations provided. The hotel provided everything we expected and more. The room was clean and personal and the view from the balcony was spectacular. The staff was very helpful in providing advice about the area including hiking recommendations, sightseeing, and transportation. Breakfast was included in the room rate and if you have to leave before breakfast is served the staff provides you with a packed lunch. The food served in the restaurant was good and reasonably priced. I would recommend getting the half fare to reduce the cost of eating out in the town. Overall we had an excellent experience staying here and look forward to staying here again.

We stayed at Zum Baren in the beginning of June and had a wonderful stay. It was the highlight of our time in Switzerland. The room was simple and clean with an incredible view of the mountains. We opted for the half board and was the best thing we could have done. The meals were amazing - creative while still using local ingredients (trout, pork steak, ham). We could see the hotel garden from our balcony, so we new we were getting something special. My husband cleaned his plate every night! The staff and owners were friendly and made us feel welcome. We were leaving early before breakfast on our last day so they packed us a lunch - left it at our door early in the morning with a pot of coffee. Even a few candies in the bag. Considerate and thoughtful.

The hotel is located downhill from the train station, so leaving in the morning was a bit of a trek for us who weren't used to the incline, but after a day of hiking, it was a nice pace downhill. There are two small markets in town for lunches (just have a picnic wherever you end up). The hotel is in a great, central location and reasonably priced for Switzerland. Wengen is a nice village in a beautiful spot within the region. There are small shops and other places to eat, if needed. We were there in the off-season, so it was pretty quiet in the evening, but we were so tired at the end of the day from walking/hiking, we just sat on the balcony and gazed at the scenery.

Wengen is a beautiful town and we have stayed there a couple of times previously, usually in one of the larger hotels with spa facilities etc.

This time we were committed to a holiday over the New Year period and had to carefully consider the budget. Based on recommendation (- from this site and other sources), we opted for the Zum Baren and were not disappointed. Although it is a small hotel (only 16 rooms), Theresa Brunner and her staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, and her husband Willy (the chef) can only be described as an artist with food.

It is really more an upmarket restaurant with rooms, and the facilities, whilst limited, include a very useful childrens play room with TV, DVD, toys etc. and also table tennis, which kept my 12 year old son occupied for most of the week! They also have an arrangement with one of the larger hotels for reduced price entry to their very nice spa facility.

All in all a very pleasant place to stay and excellent value for money. I should think that it would be equally good for a summer holiday.

As with other reviewers, we stayed several nights. Highlights: the cheerful, attentive hosts and wait staff, the free internet in the lounge, the breakfast and dinner food and view from the dining area, and the relatively less expensive price compared to most Wengen hotels. The food is excellent, both dinner and breakfast. They had a selection of great regional Swiss wines. I wish we had done the half-board: the 20 SF for a dinner there would have been a steal. The breakfast buffet was large and varied. The bread loaf choices were excellent. The cheese and deli meat choices were excellent – out of 2 weeks in Switzerland this had the top 2 varieties of cheese. There is also juice, hot drinks, whole fruit, and of course yoghurt and granola. The room was pretty small but the bed was comfortable (for Switzerland). I think we got the last room when we called from the free hotel phone at the train station in Lauterbrunnen below Wengen. The minor downside was that our room was the lowest floor and faced the town rather than the Lauterbrunnen valley so we missed out on the views. Particularly, we caught the early street noise as small delivery vans made their drives in front of the hotel early each morning – and then the construction started up each day on some condo/hotel just up the street. However, we observed that fall must be the season for renovation as we saw that going on around the Berner Oberland towns, so you could have this problem around any hotel at this time of year. So ask for a room with a view of the valley and that might help. But I consider us lucky to have been able to stay at this hotel and we hope to return here for a longer stay in the area.

  • Liked — Food and sincere interest of the owners and staff
  • Disliked — Location of particular room 106 on street-side

Friends suggested Wengen as a good choice for summer hiking with kids (9 and 11) but finding last-minute lodgings that wouldn't break the bank was tough. Other Tripadvisor reviews made me reach out to the hotel directly and I exchanged very helpful emails with the owner (and apparently head chef.)

Unfort. we had to book two rooms across the hall from each other as the family room wasn't available. The kids thought the idea of their own room was GREAT and given that we were at the end of a short corridor in a family-run hotel in a small Swiss village...we were fine with them having their own room too. And since the parents were paying, the parents got the view.

Killer mountain views. Small balcony that we could sit on and simply gawk. Downside was that the balconies were only separated by low rails so when our next door neighbors lit up, our room filled with cigarette smoke. Welcome to Switzerland!

We elected the half-board because we figured at the end of long days of being outside, we'd be somewhat disinterested in tromping through Wengen for a good family restaurant plus other reviewers spoke highly of the meals. They were right. Excellent food at night, plenty of choices at breakfast.

Only one challenge was that the dinner meal could take some time given the size of the kitchen and the numbers being fed and when you're waiting with 2 kids for dessert and it's taken almost 40 minutes, you do start to lose your mind. Fortunately the restaurant/hotel looks out over a small playground with a VERY popular trampoline. So we sent the kids down to play and they were very content.

Rooms weren't large but that wasn't a problem. Bathrooms clean and VERY BRIGHT (think orange.) Shower was wonderful. Distance from train station was maybe a 5 minute walk. Small grocery in town (Coop) allows you to get provisions for picnic lunches when you head above Wengen to hike or across the valley to places like Murren and above.

Owner's wife charming and spoke English. Waitstaff all spoke English as well. Despite prices sounding high ($290 per night for two rooms, plus breakfast plus dinner) it wound up being a smart deal. Definitely recommend!

Our family of 6 stayed at the Baeren (3 separate rooms) for 2 nights in June. We had a wonderful time there and can't say enough good things about the hotel and restaurant! We paid for the half-board only one night and the meal was excellent! Definitely worth your money. Our rooms were clean, spacious, and we had wonderful views from 2 of them. Make sure you request a room with a view if possible! The free internet in the lobby is a definite plus! Breakfast every morning was so good... homemade cheeses and jams, fresh bread and fruit. The hosts were so kind and gave us perfect recommendations for hiking. You will love the Baeren and Wengen! Make sure to ask if there is a folkfest in Wengen while you are there. We just happened to be in town one night when they had one and we were treated to traditional dancing, yodeling, the alp horn, and giant cow bells!
