Firstly, Wengen is amazing. It's pretty cool that places like this still exist in this world. If you are lucky enough to travel to the Jungfrau area, stay at Alpenrose. Get a south view to overlook the magical Lauterbrunnen Valley from your balcony if you can. That alone is worth 5 stars. Waking up to that view from the balcony is truly priceless. The hotel will pick you up from the station and grab your bags but you can walk if you want. The hike back up to the station is a bit steep, we were definitely sucking air each time we walked back up, but it wasn't so bad the way back down. Also, that was part of the fun of it. You could always ask for a ride in the really cool blue electric car if you don't prefer the short trek. The room was very nice and spacious for European standards. The bathroom was pleasantly clean and updated. We brought our own soaps and shampoos and such though, which I might suggest if you don't mind doing without the designer type stuff. We got a "queen" bed which was basically a split mattress of two singles Kind of funky, pillows not very comfy really, but bed was fine. We were a bit jetlagged though so we probably would have slept better if it were later in the trip. It's not a/c which was expected, but it was unusually hot week so even a fan in the room might be great idea; but again, nothing to expect in a place like this, just an idea generally. I really have zero complaints about the place. Staff was really nice and went out of their way to help with ideas and planning. They let us borrow a converter for electric outlet when the one we had didn't work. The room has a good flatscreen tv though and hairdryer and other standard stuff. Lot of storage space too. It's apparently a family-owned hotel with tons of great history. Breakfast was included which was ideal. They even let us check in a bit early with no inconvenience. Great selection and good for starting a long day of sightseeing. Fresh bread, eggs, cereal, etc. Quick service too. Dinner came with the "half-fare" which was actually very good. 5 courses, everything fresh and tasty with pretty decent variety. It's nice to know you can just come back to your hotel at night and have a good meal to eat. Seating is kind of prearranged so if you want a seat next to the window you might want to ask in advance. They were flexible on some dishes too; when my wife wasn't interested in the veal one night, the waiter kindly offered an alternative dish like chicken which wasn't on the menu. Solid wine selection from various locations. Nothing insanely expensive on wines which was nice. Great dessert and cheese selection. Again, everything in Switzerland is pretty pricey but I felt the value was right on. Keep in mind, Wengen is pretty quiet town. The hotel generally was quiet by like 9 p.m. even if you got a drink or two outside after dinner. Overall one of our best stays ever. I can't say enough about waking up and hearing cow bells and enjoying that view. Miss it already. Alpenrose is a true gem. Really miss it and only stayed two nights. Hopefully one day will get to return in this lifetime.
