“Great Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

Hotel is situated near the train station. A buggy is always around to bring you back and forth from station if you are too lazy to walk. Hotel room is very clean and items in mini bar are free for one's comsumption. Hotel staff is helpful and efficient.

Car free village, with great transport - trains, and cable car opposite hotel. Very comfy and room had all that we needed. Appreciated the free minibar with soft drinks and beer - refilled each day. Ample buffet breakfast, and evening menu was fine though main courses tended to be a bit unexciting - lovely salad buffet though with loads of choice. The indoor swimming pool was fab - included sauna and steam room, loungers in gardens and round pool - best relaxation after long, wonderful walks. I think I would opt for an upgrade on the other side of the hotel for better views, but this isn't a grumble, just an observation. Friendly and efficient service. A lovely stay in this beautiful area.

Room Tip: Opt for rooms overlooking the Lauterbrunnen valley rather than the street.

My husband and I stayed here for the first part of our trip to the Bernese Oberland. We had stayed previously in Interlaken and Grindelwald, but this was our first trip to Wengen. We loved the car free, walkable town, and we loved this hotel! The front desk greeted us with a lovely homemade drink of local herbs and flowers, and the owner, Oliver, was there to greet us. We had a nice room with a wonderful view of the mountains and a glimpse of the train as it passed by. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the train station, although they also have carts to pick you up with your luggage. We booked half board and enjoyed the breakfast buffet and 5-course dinner every day. My husband particularly liked the salad buffet, which is quite varied. It was also nice to come back to a turned down room every night after dinner.

The hotel is also careful to make guests aware of various activities happening in Wengen and Maennlichen. We went on the medicinal herb walk around Wengen and quite enjoyed it. I should mention that the pool area is very nice, as well, with a little jetted area for sore muscles after all that Alpine hiking! All in all, this is a great hotel for the value. The bathroom was a little outdated, but definitely usable. The room was nice, and the view was worth everything. We would definitely come back!

Room Tip: Rooms on the back side of the hotel have spectacular views of the mountain, though I believe they ar...

My wife and three children stayed here for 3 nights in early June and loved it. Wengen is a beautiful town - quaint, historic, and surrounded by some of the most amazing natural beauty on earth. I have stayed in a wide range of hotels - including very high end ones - and the level of personal service at Sunstar was "perfect" - incredibly attentive, but not "stuffy" - it was genuine and personal. Oliver personally greets all the guests, is omnipresent in the lobby and restaurant, and always asking how he can make one's stay better, always providing great suggestions and advice, etc. When one of our children became very ill from altitude sickness up on Jungfraujoch, the hotel staff was super helpful in contacting a doctor, providing us with what we needed, etc. The room itself was terrific, the view of the mountains unsurpassed, and the included breakfast was beyond expectations. We also really enjoyed our Wednesday evening traditional Swiss buffet for dinner. I would absolutely stay here again - in fact, I want to go back right now!

One of the things that made this hotel stand out was the attention to detail and the refreshing hands-on style of the friendly manager, Oliver, who was genuinely concerned to provide the best possible service. I understand that the hotel operates an enlightened management style which draws all members of staff into the running of the hotel (a bit like the John Lewis / Waitrose modus operandi). This obviously pays dividends in gaining commitment from the staff, who all gave their jobs 100% and were very polite and friendly, as well as efficient. How different to many places in the UK! Although we did not expect a full meal on our arrival a little after the normal restaurant closing time, the restaurant staff had stayed late and treated us like honoured guests, after we checked in and were welcomed with a drink. Our valley view room with balcony was lovely - spacious, comfortable and thoughtfully equipped with everything we could want including a fridge (including a mini-bar with soft drinks and beer), coat hooks, bottle opener, long shoe-horn and a rubber mat for those walking shoes. The wardrobes are a good size. Also there was a chair by the door to sit on while putting on outdoor shoes- just an example of the thought has gone into making the hotel as comfortable and convenient as possible. Swiss electrical power sockets differ to most European ones although some 2 pin European adaptors will fit into flush 3 pin wall sockets (we had a 2 pin adaptor that did fit and one with very slightly thicker pins that did not). However some wall sockets have diamond shaped recesses in which case you need the proper Swiss adaptor - see photo. The hotel thoughtfully provides adaptors which are available on free loan at reception. There is also free unlimited wi-fi for the length of your stay. Unlike some hotels we have stayed in, a kettle was provided with tea and coffee. Beds were turned down over dinner and a little chocolate provided. Nice! The aerated over bath shower was very powerful and controllable - just as a shower should be. The hotel pool looked very inviting, but as we had a week of good weather the great outdoors took precedence. And GREAT is the best word. The restaurant meals, including breakfast, were excellent, and the service was very good. On a half board basis the meals were good value. The local beer was very reasonably priced but wines in Switzerland are more expensive than we are used to paying in the UK. When it came to going home time we decided to use the Swiss Air luggage transfer service. Our suitcases were taken direct from our hotel the day before we left and arrived on the same plane as us at Manchester. OK it costs but it avoided having to lug heavy suitcases on and off trains as it takes at least 4 trains and 3 hours to get here from Zurich airport. Connection times can be quite tight, but the trains almost always run on time. The reception staff were very helpful in arranging our luggage transfers and checking us in for our flights home. This was our first trip to the Alps and it was amazing. We bought a 6 day Jungfraubahn Pass which gave us unlimited travel on most of the regions trains and cable cars, as well as cruises on the lakes from Interlaken – we went to Brienz, a very attractive little lakeside village from where there are connections to the open air folk museum at Ballenberg (which unfortunately we did not have time to visit). The Jungfraubahn Pass provided easy access to some wonderful mountain restaurants (e.g. at First) and walks, and spectacular scenery everywhere. Although the pass is quite pricey, it does mean you can get around and see as much of the area as possible without having to worry about the cost – ideal for first time visitors like us. Unfortunately the Mannlichen – Kleine Scheidegg walk we have read so much about was still closed due to snow on 10 June - and likely to remain closed for a week or 2 more! The Jungfraubahn Pass does not include the trip to Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe) nor the Schilthorn (007 revolving restaurant) but the Swiss Card provided by our travel agent, Inghams, secured a substantial reduction in price. Wengen is a good centre for exploring this wonderful area and the Sunstar proved an excellent base from which to do so. Being (virtually) traffic free it is much quieter than Grindelwald, which would have been our second choice of location. Hopefully we will be back soon. We are very grateful to the staff at the Sunstar for making our stay so comfortable and enjoyable. Because we did not use the pool and sauna facilities etc I have not rated them. 5/5.

Room Tip: The valley view rooms with balcony have a lovely outlook.

Quiet, car free town. Everything you want and more at the Sunstar. Warm and friendly welcome from Oliver on our first night with a cold plate of meats and cheese laid on in our room (we arrived after 10 at night). Great location, opposite the gondola; a 5 minute walk from the train station. comfortable rooms with plenty of cupboard space; turn down service with chocolates; great restaurant serving delicious evening meals and an amazing breakfast spread. The staff were excellent, friendly and accommodating. Nothing was too much effort from the receptionists, waiting staff and housekeeping. A heated bootroom and a heated pool. Excellent all round. Will recommend to friends and family. Keep up the good work in Wengen, it doesn't go unnoticed.

Room Tip: A quiet town so rooms on the street or overlooling the mountain are both great

My wife and I had the pleasure of staying here for 5 nights.
Katja and Oliver welcomed us on our first morning (we arrived at 10:45pm - which was no problem!) after breakfast and gave us some great tips for the town and everything Sunstar had to offer.
From the free minibar to the pool and breakfasts, everything was brilliant.
Reception was always present and happy to help with anything.
Our room was very nice and the bathroom was better than we had expected.
If you're staying in Wengen, you can't go past this place for location, price, facilities and staff.
Highly, highly recommend!!
