We stayed here for five nights in September for our 10th anniversary hiking trip through Switzerland. Wengen is totally charming, and a wonderful place to base oneself.
The hotel is a grand old Victorian building with a small garden area, a large lobby and generously-sized public spaces. Most public spaces and hallways are a little dark and spooky - at times, I felt as if I was in the movie, "The Shining," waiting for that kid to come around the corner on the tricycle!
We were shown three different rooms before we found one that was acceptable. The view made up for the hotel's deficiencies, as we saw the Lauterbrunnen Valley and the Jungfrau from our balcony. The bathroom required a step down and was tiny, tiny, tiny: tiny soap, tiny glasses, tiny shower, tiny lights - dark!
Bed was comfortable. Breakfast was very good. Staff was very eager to please, although one gets the feeling that the owners are jetsetters or absentee - they seem more eager to sell condos within the property than expressing an interest in their guests. Stay at the Berghaus - it's simpler and plainer, but the atmosphere is brighter, crisper, and more friendly!
