We stayed here for five nights in September for our 10th anniversary hiking trip through Switzerland. Wengen is totally charming, and a wonderful place to base oneself.

The hotel is a grand old Victorian building with a small garden area, a large lobby and generously-sized public spaces. Most public spaces and hallways are a little dark and spooky - at times, I felt as if I was in the movie, "The Shining," waiting for that kid to come around the corner on the tricycle!

We were shown three different rooms before we found one that was acceptable. The view made up for the hotel's deficiencies, as we saw the Lauterbrunnen Valley and the Jungfrau from our balcony. The bathroom required a step down and was tiny, tiny, tiny: tiny soap, tiny glasses, tiny shower, tiny lights - dark!

Bed was comfortable. Breakfast was very good. Staff was very eager to please, although one gets the feeling that the owners are jetsetters or absentee - they seem more eager to sell condos within the property than expressing an interest in their guests. Stay at the Berghaus - it's simpler and plainer, but the atmosphere is brighter, crisper, and more friendly!

I have stayed at the Regina four or five times over a number of years. We have always booked through Inghams in England and have had East facing , Village view and South facing rooms. I have just read some very bad reviews of the hotel and could not believe it!
I feel so affectionate towards the hotel that I wanted to set the balance right.
I would say that it is worth paying extra for a south facing room and it is true that some rooms were in need of refurbishment but that is not unusual in Swiss hotels. They tend to look after their property very well so it lasts a long time.
The food is excellent and I have always felt that dinner was a special event.
As for the people who found the family unfriendly I have always found that Mr Meyer talks to every guest at dinner for a few moments and that he makes every effort to speak many languages. Perhaps his Japanese is not as good as it should be!!!!! I have always found that the Asian tourists never look at you and give signals that they don't want you to talk to them. Perhaps he has approached them in the past and they have seemed to not want the attention. I am sure he is not racist as one guest seemed to imply.

The family are very polite and I am not surprised if sometimes his wife seems a little aloof. She must be sick and tired of always playing the hostess. I get fed up with my own family being in my house for one day at Christmas. Also it is fair to say that some guests behave very badly.
I think it is very unfair to rate a family as some people have done but if I had to I would say they are a charming family who live their lives sometimes on a public stage. I have always found their daughter to be very polite and I have watched her grow up over the years.

In summary, I love the Regina. The only criticism I would have is that you could die of thirst trying to get a drink sometimes. Having said that at peak periods you are OK as there seem to be more staff. I have spent Christmas, New year, Spring and Summer in the Regina over a number of years . I am very fussy but I would say it is well morth the money and a charming experience.

I have also stayed at the Sunstar and left four days early as I was so disappointed. I have NEVER wanted to leave the Regina even when my time was up!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope this sets the record straight

I booked this hotel for 1 night of a week long trip through central Switzerland based on the reviews on this site and also a guidebook stating it was the best hotel in Wengen. However, I was extremely disappointed in our stay, especially considering the price we paid! It was by far the most expensive hotel we stayed at during the week and by far the worst. Although the hotel claims four stars, it is more like low 3 to me. So the price is really outrageous, unless you pay only for the view! The view, I admit, was wonderful, and also the room was very large by European standards. However, furniture in the room was very old, TV so small could barely see it from the bed, carpet very bare, stains on the wall, and very uncomfortable bed. Also, a terrible odor in the room the whole time (not smoke - just old mustiness I think), even after leaving windows open for the night. It is clear the hotel was probably very nice at some point, like 50 years ago, but no more! Stay somewhere else for cheaper and get the view from the town itself or just up the mountain via cable car.

Hotel Regina is a conveniently located, classic European hotel. We had a corner room which had a breathtaking view of Jungfrau on one side and the valley on the other.

This is a first-rate hotel. Upon check-in, we were offered complimentary neck or leg massages, fresh fruit for our room, etc. The staff is very attentive and the hotel well maintained and clean.

We would definitely return to Hotel Regina.

“Disappointed”

We have stayed in many hotels in Wengen and have encountered excellent servicet here. This one however did not meet our expectation of a first class hotel. The setting is indeed beautiful. The bedrooms are very average despite ours being one of the most exclusive in the hotel. The service at meal times was poor. Breakfast often had empty containers despite there being over an hour left to serve. The choice at brekfast was basic. They did however replenish items if you asked. Service in the bar was slack with sometimes there being no one available to serve you. There were no little 'extras' to make your stay more comfortable. The minibar in the room was empty. There are many hotels which offer better service and comfort in Wengen and we will not be visiting this hotel again..
