In three weeks spent traveling across Europe, two hotels stood above the rest, and this was one of them. I was here for two nights in September 2013 and couldn't have asked for more in the way of hospitality and comfort.
The proprietor, Ema, is the tireless engine upon which this place functions smoothly. When she's not tending to paperwork in her office, she can be found pouring a drink behind the bar or hustling food to tables. Despite all this, she has time to sit down with some of her guests and chat. No wonder the locals who drop in for the bar and restaurant display an enthusiastic warmth toward her.
Even if I'd never met Ema, however, I'd have loved this place. It's conveniently located across from the train station, which is greatly appreciated when you've traveled a long distance to get there. The staff is courteous and friendly. And while there were certainly other places to eat in Mürren, I never saw any reason to visit them after the first night because breakfast was better than adequate and dinner was excellent. I had a rösti one night and a schnitzel the next and both were better than anything I ate in Germany or Austria save for one meal in Munich and another in Salzburg.
It's a bit of a different place in that the entrance is given over to food and drink. There's no front desk per se, just the angled bar and a big, round table. This entrance is flanked by two dining rooms, one of which is set aside for breakfast. In the evening this area has great atmosphere and warmth; clearly, the locals like being here and the tourists are thrilled to be in a place like Mürren, which is truly breathtaking.
I can't speak to other places in Mürren. I'm sure there were other fine establishments. This was my first trip there and I chose the Guesthouse because it was available on the dates I wanted, priced reasonably and had been given good reviews. Seriously, I'd have been satisfied if it simply had been a comfy place to lay my head. But if I'm ever lucky enough to go back, I'll stay here as long as Ema's still in charge.
Note to disabled travelers: There's no elevator here. But the staff seems to be quite accustomed to helping guests with their belongings up and down the stairs if need be.
