“Great hosts, and there are changes coming to the Eiger Guesthouse”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

You can probably find hotels with bigger, fancier rooms than the Eiger Guesthouse, but you wont find better service. And that is what I was looking for when I booked our rooms. Emma and the staff made us feel like we were staying with friends while we were there. And that is a part of travel that I appreciate. I don't just want to see places and things, I also want to meet and interact with tbe people who live there. Emma was a huge help for us, especially suggesting the North Face hiking trail above Murren. We enjoyed sharing the details of our outing the next day. She obviously lives the area, and enjoys sharing it with her guests, and enjoys hearing about their outings.

Breakfast was typical European, and we also really enjoyed the dinners, as we optioned for the half board option.

Now to the changes. During the October/November shutdown, they will paint the rooms and the hallway. I do agree that this will give it a fresh look, But the bigger news is that she is hiring an Italian chef and installing a pizza oven. The Eiger Guesthouse restaurant will be turned into a pizzaria/Italian restaurant. So take this into account when considering half board.

Tips:

It is worth getting a room with a view. We had room 4, and had a great view. If you are not able to get a room with a view, there is a terrace on the second floor. Take the stairs to the rooms by the lobby, go up one flight, and turn left.

The rooms do not automatically lock, so you must use the key to lock it, even from the inside of the room.

The bathtub, like many European hotels, is taller than what Americans are used to. Not that it is hard to get in and out, but you need to pay attention, especially stepping out.

If you want to swim, there is a public pool in Murren, and the Guesthouse can get you a pass. There is also a jacuzzi at the pool, though it is not as warm as most. You also will need to bring towels, as they do not provide towels at the pool.

We spent three nights in Murren at the Guesthouse. The views were amazing and the Guesthouse was a very nice place to call home for those three nights. The staff was very gracious every time we passed through. The room was updated and very clean with remarkable views. We did just the breakfast and it was excellent. The hiking in the area is breathtaking. it will be a place to visit again one day.

Pros:
Location - right next to the cable car/train from Lauterbrunnen
Service - the staff was friendly and helpful
Breakfast - the included breakfast was a step above normal continental breakfasts

The only con was price, but I think that is typical for such a hard to access town in Switzerland.

We stayed here for 3 nights. My partner is lactose intolerant and after discussing this with Emma, we took up the half board option. Emma organized dairy free food. She even ordered in goats cheese which my partner is able to eat. We really appreciated this. The half board option adds dinner to the included breakfast and for Chf 28pp is good value for a fixed 3 course meal. Meals are very expensive in the alps.

The guest house is about 15 meters from the train station. Our room was basic and clean with fantastic views looking out to Jungfrau, Monch and the Eiger. The other staff were friendly and attentive. We felt like family when returning from our daily treks with everyone greeting us and interested in our day. Emma passed on advice on the treks and the weather. Over dinner, she would stop by to ask how our day was and have a chat.

On leaving, we shared hugs all round and were very appreciative of the personal care and attention given to us. The service makes this guesthouse a great choice.

We spent 5 nights here with our two kids. Ema gave us great advice on hiking. We loved the difficult hike to Hotel OBersteinberg and the challenging hike up Schilthorn (we hiked up and down with our kids). Don't eat at the restaurant at Schilthorn if you can eat somewhere else it's probably better. The rosti with chicken and mushrooms at the guesthouse was amazing. The best food we had on our trip. It actually got my two mushroom adverse kids to like mushrooms! We had an amazing time in Murren. I highly recommend it for people who love hiking. The whole experience (good food, excellent hiking, great views, clean rooms, pleasant and helpful staff) at the guesthouse makes it such a recommended place.

We stayed in a balcony room facing the train station for 8 nights in July, and it was lovely! Highly recommend getting a balcony room if you come here, it was so much fun to sit and watch all the hikers returning from their travels at the end of the day.

Ema gave us a discount on the room for staying so many nights, too.

This was a very good base location for all our Switzerland activities: hiking near Murren, visiting the Schilthorn, renting bikes to explore the Lauterbrunnen valley, paragliding in Interlaken (SkyWings!), and even visiting the Jungfrau -- everything was easy to access with the fantastic train system. We used a SwissPass, and almost all our travels were included.

Our room had comfortable beds, good water pressure in the shower, ample shelf space in the bathroom, and cozy linens. Ema even suggested a hike for us one day, which turned out to be WAY better than the one we were planning to do! All the hotel staff we encountered were very nice, too.

The only drawback we encountered was that we got rather tired of the same breakfast items by about day five of our trip. That was remedied with a trip to the Piz Gloria for the breakfast buffet on Day Six, but it would be lovely if the Guesthouse could have the cook come for breakfast just a couple days per week, and make some bacon and eggs for the hotel guests. But the lack of hot breakfast is certainly not a deal breaker here, with everything else this place is doing right.

I'd highly recommend making Eiger Guesthouse your base for a nice Swiss summer vacation!

Room Tip: Choose a balcony room facing the train station. The trains don't run from 10:00pm till 7:00am, s...

My wife and I spent 5 nights here in July. Everything was fantastic, as the other reviews indicate. Murren is abit away from it all in an otherwise realtively touristy Bernese Oberland area, so is quieter and more laid back. There is some day traffic but at night things really quiet down. The Eiger Guesthouse is right by the small railway station but contrary to being a disadvantage is actually nice -- the sound of the two car cog train was actually pleasant and calming, watching the visitors disembark and getting oriented was fun, and after 7 or so things were totally peaceful. The changing views of the big 3 - Eiger, Monch, Jungfrau -- from the room balconies any time of day or night were incredible.

The hotel is great -- comfortable, great service, good food. No doubt would stay there again.
