“BEWARE! Smoke and Flies Abound”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2007

We stayed at the Hotel Alpina for 3 nights in late June 2007. While there were some redeeming factors we must warn travelers that there are much better places to stay for the same price! First the positives. The owner Roger and his wife are very nice friendly people. The views are truly amazing. Now for the negatives. The Hotel is very tired in its decor, there is no elevator, the breakfasts were minimal (yogurt had bits of food in it, not refilled, flies all over dining room every time we ate there) and worst of all the whole hotel, especially the halls and rooms, smelled STRONGLY OF SMOKE. It was almost unbearable. Each time we entered the hotel we ran up the 4 flights of stairs and would have to make sure we opened and closed our door quickly or the room would smell even worse. We looked at the Regina and the Edelweiss Hotels in Mureen which offered clean, sparkling rooms and common rooms for the time we were there at the same price with the same views and abslolutely would have moved but our reservation had a 7 day cancel policy. I hate to write this review because the owners were so nice but we were so horribly disappointed and dont want others to experience the same thing.

My husband and I stayed at the Alipna for 3 nights. The view from our bedroom was breathtaking. The hotel is old, but spotlessly clean. We could only get breakfast at the hotel, as we were there, just as the village closed up, to get ready for the Christmas Season. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

We are a couple and visited Switzerland for the first time.

First of all make sure that your room is facing the mountains. The view from the rooms are just incredible. We supposed to do several things in the region but we mostly stayed in our room only to enjoy the breathtaking view from our balcony.

For a 2star Hotel the rooms are very nice and clean. Not big but very cousy with radio and minibar. When we asked the Hotel owner if we can watch a soccer game (we are portugese!) in the evening he offered us a TV for our room free of charge!

The breakfast offers 3 sorts of serials, two juices, bread, rolls, cheese and ham. The Swiss specialities at the restaurant are great! Try the Alpina Roesti.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately we only stayed 3 nights at the Alpina but we will be back and recommend it to all of our friends!

We stayed in Murren for 2 nights in order to let our two kids experience snow for the first time. Firstly a note regarding Murren - the town basically shuts down from the middle of April for around six weeks. Our stay coincided with the cusp of this hiatus and therefore Murren was a bit of a ghost town.

As for the Hotel Alpina, let's start with its one huge plus. The view from our room was incredibly spectacular. Anyone considering staying at this hotel MUST confirm a room on the valley side of the hotel. Otherwise you will find yourself staring at a nondescript swiss chalet across the lane.

Our family room, with two double beds, was very small. (The "bathroom" sink is situated outside the bathroom!) It was also situated on the fourth floor, and there is no lift.

We booked under a dinner, bed and breakfast arrangement. The breakfast was the usual continental affair, but the dinner was a set 3 course menu. This lack of choice was a bit of a disappointment.

During my email correspondence and at the time of our check-in, I found the proprietors to be friendly. Unfortunately things went downhill badly on our last evening.

At dinner our family of four and another couple were the only people in the dining room. The remainder of the restaurant was set for a large group. During our meal the group arrived for what appeared to be some form of club meeting. The woman who runs the Alpina seemed to be a committee member. As we were chatting away minding our own business, one of the group rose and began a speech - at which point the owner turned to us and told us to stop talking!

If we had been told beforehand that we needed to vacate the dining room by a certain time we would've obliged, but to be "shushed" in the middle of a meal was outrageous. What had been a pleasant evening came to grinding halt. Hopefully any future guests of the Hotel Alpina will not experience such rudeness.

We stayed here after our original "confirmed" hotel became over booked and forced us into a different hotel. The decor of the hotel is very tiered and old. Rooms are tiny and the bathroom even smaller. Staff is very nice & friendly though. Don't stay here if you are looking for a nice hotel/vacation. It's only a place to sleep after a long day of skiing or hiking.

We were two couples and had the family apartment on the third floor with two rooms (two single beds and a double bed). The view was amazing and the staff very friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean. Since we were leaving in the evening we were even allowed a late check out, which was practical.

A great holiday location if you are an outdoor person. Decent hotel, most staff incredibly friendly and helpful, decor slightly dated but incredibly clean, very comfortable beds and great location. Good value compared to the rest of the village, especially considering that Switzerland is so expensive. The views are definitely some in the Alps. Just a note that the cable car is extremely expensive and it is worth looking into discounts before you arrive. Enjoy.

  • Liked — The views from our balcony.
  • Disliked — The food and one of the staff who was a nightmare to deal with.
