We stayed with our NZ friends for one night in the Tourist Hotel in Meiringen and found this a well run establishment (accommodation and restaurant). The rooms are lovely and clean, the food was excellent and the interaction with the staff good. We liked the lovely showers and beds and had no trouble sleeping despite of the proximity of the Grimselstrasse and creek coming down the hill. The only issue we had was with Internet. Despite our efforts to get connection in the second, first and ground floor we were not successful. Management suggested that maybe too many customers tried to connect at the same time - but that was of little help in our situation. On the positive side, the hotel is close to key tourist spots like Aareschlucht, Reichenbach Falls and the cable way up to Kaesernalp. Overall very happy with the services provided

Room tip: Ask for rooms away from the road - and facing the hills and Reichenbach Falls

We spent 10 days there. On the first night the owner asked us what the kids liked to eat and he would accommodate them as best as possible. This he did and the food was excellent. If one or other kid didn't like the main course they would be furnished with sausages or an omelette. Didn't like the pudding, no problem, just choose an ice cream.

BA lost one of our bags on the way out containing all of our daughters clothing. Go out and buy something for her BA said. Have you been to Switzerland on a Sunday my wife asked ?? Martin said no problem and lent us some of his daughters old clothes.

The room was comfortable, the family room had a double and bunk beds. The bathroom was shower only but good, there was a nice balcony. The hotel has a garden with swings and a climbing frame, rabbits and an area of grass. My kids loved it. There was also a play room downstairs with a table tennis table and other games.

The waiting staff were as good as the owner. Excellent English was spoken by all (as well as French, German and some Dutch).

The surrounding area is perfect for a family holiday. The Aare Gorge is a short walk away and spectacular. If you like that you can walk (or take the Post bus) up Rosenlaui for the gorge there, a the world heritage site. The two Muggestutz trails on Hasliberg keep the kids happy as will the crazy golf. Of course there is also the Reichenbach Falls of Sherlock Holmes fame. Also with the excellent railway service you can get a bit further afield to visit superb attractions like the museum at Ballenberg or the transport museum at Lucerne.

I have been passing the Hotel Tourist on trips to Meiringen for a number of years and even eaten there so this year we decided to go and stay there as it has always interested me.
We were very happy with our visit here this summer. We stayed for ten nights on a half board basis which offered great value for money. Our family room was cosy and clean with views in two directions. The en suite bathroom with shower was fine, with plenty of hot water and decent bathroom cabinet on which to put my toiletries (thank you !). The beds were very comfy.
The food was delicious, there were continental breakfasts and carefully prepared traditional dishes for dinner. An alternative could be organised if something was not what one of us liked (handy with children) and there was always a tasty starter and dessert. You must try the kaiserschnitte (a kind of special cheese on toast) and the rosti.
Martin Schlappi was a kindly and welcoming host and he was most helpful, especially when BA decided not to put our my daughters case on the plane and he lent her a coat and shoes which was kind.
The Hotel Tourist is just on the outskirts of the town on the edge of a lovely area of old houses and farms. There is a great open air swimming pool over the road. The walk to the middle of the town is easy and pleasant. It is also very near the Reichenbach falls (you can see this from the breakfast room) and the Aare Gorge which are interesting attractions. The cable car to the Hasliberg mountain area is not far either, with lovely walks for all ages and abilities, and two dwarf trails up on the mountain for the children, with many play areas.
There is also a nice play garden at the hotel.
I would heartily recommend this hotel for a holiday for families or smaller groups. We will be back ourselves for another enjoyable stay in the future.

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights during a touring holiday of Germany and Switzerland. The owner and Heidi, the waitress/ bar person, could not have done more for us and made our children feel very welcome. They always had time to talk to us and were keen to share information about the local area. Our family room was clean, cosy and comfortable and the shared bathroom, although small, was always spotless. Although we had only booked bed and breakfast, we upgraded to half-board on arrival and we were not disappointed by the traditional Swiss meals. The 3 course evening meals were wholesome, filling and tasty and the breakfasts were more than adequate. Having spent the previous week near Interlaken we found the locals in Meiringen much more friendly and the area in general less touristy. We would recommend the Hotel Tourist to anyone looking for a welcoming, value for money family hotel in a beautiful part of Switzerland!

We were a group of 8 people and booked two 4-bed-rooms (one with shared bathroom and one with private bathroom). This family hotel is simple but nice, it has all you need for a short stay. The breakfast is great and included in the room rate. In general, the price is very reasonable for Switzerland (50CHF/person in the room with private bathroom and 37.5CHF in the other).

The hotel is somewhat outside the village and therefore especially suited for people with a car.
