I usually do my booking based upon reviews and in this case took a chance. Unfortunately, poor was the best I could give this hotel. It was booked through an online aggregator for a relatively reasonable price. The 95 CHF/per night for 5 nights was still more than what we felt was due. We tried to move hotels after the first night, but found the area to be very busy and even the hostels were booked until our 6th night, when we did relocate.
The hotel has lovely bones. The large dining room and quaint bar would have great potential. The hotel, particularly the main and 1st floors (of which half appears to serve as the owners residence) is crowded with a confusing mix of furnishings. Furnishings range from overstuffed 80's leather sofas, empty cheap laminate shelving to brass children's cradles covered in animal pelts. It is a little odd. The dining room is large, beautifully painted, but decorated with cheap string lights, paper pom poms and mardi gras beads. Again, odd. It all smells a bit musty and of old cigarette smoke. Often the smells from the owner's personal kitchen filled our room.
Our room. The double bed was really a large futon with two separate and very uncomfortable mattresses. The linens and towels were mix and match and not always fresh. To get to the shared bath we had to go to the opposite side of the floor past the owners own residence (curtains separated their hall) but around their own coats and shoe racks. I kept feeling like I was sneaking around someone's home when using the loo.
The breakfast is very simple and we recognized the same bowl of yogurt, jelly and hard boiled eggs each day (yes they are hot pink eggs!). We didn't try the meats or cheeses. Breakfast is standard, but certainly not anything fresh or special. We did try a couple of beers from their bar, but the dining room prices were expensive and hours uncertain. We went down the street for Thai most nights.
The hotel is operated as Hotel Alpina, Interlaken, but our rooms were booked under BasicRoomsHotel.com. It appears to be one and the same. I would not pay full price for these rooms. I would recommend staying at a local hostel (the Swiss Youth Hostel by Interlaken OST is where we relocated to and LOVED it) and you will likely get a cleaner shared bath and more comfortable room. Better yes, venture into Murren or Gimmelwald and stay in the mountains for a bit more.
Before ending this review I must say that the owners can be very nice. The operation is family run and the mom is very helpful. She seems to work very hard and warms up once you get to talk to her. I would love to give it a better rating, but we simply couldn't wait to move on.
