We stayed at the Chalet Oberland Hotel in Interlaken over the August 1st National Day Holiday. The location is very convenient to the Interlaken West train station and although you can walk to the Interlaken Ost (East) station, we found it to be more convenient to just hop a train at West and travel 3 minutes to the East station and catch our next train.
The location is on a very busy tourist street. There are a number of eating options close by.
The hotel itself consists of an older original building, with a small lobby and a traditional attached restaurant. There is a second, very modern building housed across a pedestrian only alley that can only be accessed from the lobby by going down a set of stairs and outside across the alley. During our stay it appeared that the newer building was completely taken over by a very large tour group, while the older building, where we were located, appeared to be housing more individual parties.
We were located on the 4th floor at the rear of the older building. Our two rooms were next door to each other and included small balconies which overlooked the alley and also directly into the rooms in the newer building (hint: if you are in the newer building, please pull your shades as the folks in the old building can see just about everything!)
To get to the 4th floor rooms with luggage, you need to take an elevator from the lobby floor to the 3rd floor, exit and walk down an interior hallway to a 2nd elevator which you take to the 4th floor. We found it more convenient to use the elevator to the 3rd floor and then walk up the stairs at that point to the 4th floor. There are numerous lounges located throughout the older building that are quite nice, well furnished and with good views.
The rooms were pretty standard. Comfortable beds, a desk and chair and small, but functional bathrooms.
The hotel is associated with multiple restaurants, including an older, traditional swiss restaurant, an italian restaurant and an asian restaurant. We only ate at the Italian restaurant and found it to be quite nice. Although they allow smoking inside the restaurant and some folks might find this annoying.
There is also an internet bar attached, as well as another bar (not affiliated with the hotel) directly behind the older building. Since we happened to be in Interlaken over the holiday, things got very noisy the night of August 1st, with fireworks being set off right in the alley under our room. The 2nd night of our stay was much more peaceful.
The breakfast buffet is served in a very large, old fashioned dining area located on the 1st floor of the hotel. It was the best breakfast buffet we encountered during our Switzerland stay and included scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and two odd offerings -- white rice and a type of broth that was poured into cups with scallions. Although the hotel was heavily booked, there was no problem getting a seat at the breakfast buffet and the service was attentive.
This hotel had no free internet access, although I believe the hotel might have had free wireless access available, but we didn't have our computer with us so I can't be sure. Ice machine is located on lobby floor next to the vending machine which had interesting selections. No minibar in the older rooms.
The staff was multilingual and very helpful and the location was very convenient. Check-in and Check-out went smoothly.
