“Has seen better times”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013 via mobile

I pretty much agree with most of the other reviews: the hotel is centrally located and easy to reach if you travel by train. The outside looks quite appealing and the reception and some parts of the hotel are very modern. The standard rooms are functional but lack some athomsphere. The breakfast is very untypical for a Swiss hotel, if you dig asian and engish food you'll be able to find something at the breakfast buffet if not... well.
There will be always a Asian travel group arriving by bus late in the evening

City Hotel Oberland’s location is very convenient for tourist and shoppers. It is centrally located just few minutes walking distance to shops and luxury boutiques, bars, restaurants, banks, train station and Interlaken casino.Despite its prime location, the hotel is safe and quiet.

Rooms and toilet are clean and new. I am amazed by the design of the room where I stayed- its like an attic with loft.

Nice view from the hotel lobby, hotel is located at the foot of the mountains.

Good buffet breakfast (their sausages and soup are good) but servers are not very helpful.

No free wifi is provided and internet connection is very expensive.

They have small elevator just enough to fit 2 people with 2 big luggage. This cause traffic and delay especially if people arrive in flock. I find the toilet strange - why would they construct it without drainage in the floor? And they would charge you if you flood the floor.

Overall, hotel is okay for an overnight stay but they could still improve to wow their guests.

This hotel is a solid average, not great but not terrible. The staff spoke English and were helpful most of the time, though they often had a bad attitude, like they were annoyed to have to help you. It is located in a good location, very close to the Interlaken West train station and only a 10-15 min walk to the Interlaken Ost station. The lobby and reception look super modern and nice, but the room was not up to the same level. One of the lights only worked intermittently which gave the room a sort of dark and dank feel at times. The room got quite hot and stuffy, even with the thermostat turned all the way down, and it was the middle of December so outside temps were in the 30s during the day and 20s at night. It would seem this hotel caters to Asian tourists. When we arrived there was a group of about 35 Asian tourists in the reception area checking in and at breakfast we saw a different group each day. Every evening a bus would pull up and offload a couple dozen Asian tourists, this happened every day we were there so it was often quite loud around the hotel.

Pros:
The location is great, right in the middle of the action.
Staff was helpful when needed and spoke English.
Restaurant staff was very nice and helpful.
Free parking.

Cons:
The rooms are kind of drab and run down. At least the one we stayed in.
Not much to do in the winter time, and most of the entertainment information was still advertising summer activities.

location is in the heart of the town which is a bonus of this hotel. Very accessible. Rooms and lifts are super puny. If your luggage are too large, you may have problems to fit inside the room/lift. Each lift can hold a max of 4 pax without luggage. Walking space are limited. I believe they are renovating the hotel to improve on this issue.

I've gotten a room which had a slanted ceiling connecting the room and the bathroom (I am fine with this). The slanted ceiling was so bad that I have to squat down and shower in the bathtub! Take note the hotel's structure does not have a pipe to drain off the excess water in the shower room. If I flood the bathroom, I have to pay 80 CHF! Ridiculous! I notify the staff and was given a change of room but i had to carry my luggage down immediately so that they could sell the room to others. I felt staff service could be warmer and nicer. If your rooms happen to face the pubs, it will be noisy and disturbing during rest time.

Some rooms comes with kitchen facilities, you need to pay 100 CHF if you use it! If you damage the water boiler, you need to pay 50 CHF! Its basically PAY PAY PAY in puny fonts! Do read with caution! Even you gotten the same type of room with your friends, please note that not all rooms are equipped with the amenities or facilities.

IF given a choice, I wont stay in this hotel.

The property is walking distance from both the Interlaken East and West Stations, though we realised later that it was much closer to the West Station. It is on the main street with a no. of restaurants and shops conveniently located nearby. Staff was very forthcoming in helping us with planning our trips to Mt Jungfrau and Schilthorn peak. Rooms were very clean and spacious, and breakfast spread was great to get you going for the long trips to Top of Europe!
