Two of us stayed at this hotel in October of 2006, the week before the hotel closed for the season. I must say, this was an awesome experience, and I hope to return to this hotel to stay again. The whole area of interlaken is worth returning to!
I found it useful to book through the hotel's website directly, dulac@bluewin.ch . If you book through the hotel directly, you are able to pay a bit extra to get a room with a balcony, and/or a room with a view of the water that is away from the train station. Comments on different websites discussed how the train station is right across from the train station, and so could be noisy. This was avoided by getting a room on the other side of the hotel. Actually, we found this to be the best thing about the hotel- because we could walk across the street and hop on a train to anywhere!
The hotel is family owned and operated, and has undergone restoration. When going to the website, I saw that there had been restoration to deal partly with water damage from a flood. HOwever, when we stayed at the hotel there was no noise and no construction currently. The hotel must have been restored wonderfully, because everything looked great and we saw no water damage anywhere.
I highly recommend this hotel. The staff was very friendly. It was a family-type atmosphere, and everyone was willing to make us feel at home. One day I got sick, and the front desk helped organize us a ride to get to the pharmacy in town. This was one of the nicest things anyone at a hotel has ever done for me. Every morning, there is a complimentary breakfast, with ham, cereal, breads and jelly, yogurt, milk and juice, etc. It was very nice and you have a view of the water as you eat. It was nice to start off the day with this breakfast. The lunch and dinner was also good- I especially liked the goulash soup. Everyone spoke some english, but I would recommend knowing a little german or finding a german book to take with you. The front desk staff knows a good bit of english, but for instance the housekeeper might not know as much. The staff is also helpful when you are trying to plan your activities for the day/week.
The rooms are very nice. Each one is unique, and has a different feel. For instance, one was very homey whereas another one was more modern. The pillows in switzerland and germany do not have much support- they are somewhat mushy- you sink into them- so if you need support bring your own!
As for activities in this area, you can purchase what is called a swiss pass, and go anywhere on the trains. The swiss pass cost us $150 each, from raileurope.com. You can take trips to different areas in switzerland, with no extra cost. You really don't need to pay the extra $11 to make a seat reservation in general- you generally can find a seat. You do, however, have to pay extra to go to jungfraujoch top of europe, and to piz gloria/ schilthorn. The trip to jungfraujoch with a swiss pass costs about $75 extra. The trip to piz gloria is about $50 for the cable rides up there. Both of these are must sees- don't miss them! These two places at the top of the swiss alps are perhaps the most beautiful places I have ever seen in my life. Be prepared to spend an entire day traveling to/from each one. It takes 2.5 hours to reach jungfraujoch from interlaken. Also, don't try to skip out on paying for the rail, because they come and check your pass/tickets!!! You can also stop all along the way to the tops of these and visit small villages, which are very interesting. One thing you will want to do is watch the weather- you will want to pick a day when there isn't fog on the mountain and it is clear. Otherwise, you will not be able to see from the mountain top down to the valley below- which is the best part.
Enjoy hotel du lac and interlaken! This is an awesome place to visit for the young and old, families, couples. Don't miss this!
