My boyfriend and I stayed at the Caprice for one night in March on for a ski weekend.
The hotel is very traditional in appearance - very homely and welcoming (it felt like a family run hotel but I don't know if it actually is or not). Comfortable reception/lounge area - when we returned one evening there was a family playing cards, relaxing with a night cap - and that for me sums up the relaxed atmosphere of the Caprice.
Room - really good size (large double bed and a lounge area with sofa and coffee table), very clean, light and airy, good sized wardrobe and drawer storage. Bathroom was a little dated but perfectly fine - and the shower was fantasticly hot (better than most) - just what's required after a long day on the slopes!
Service/staff - the staff were excellent - very friendly, accommodating and helpful, with valued local knowledge. Couldn't have asked for more. Would return on basis of staff alone.
Amenities - as our stay was short we didnt have time to explore everything the hotel had on offer. We were on a ski weekend so somewhere to store skis/snowboards etc was a necessity - the hotel had ample room and a good boot room.
The hotel has a restuarant and a very reasonably priced evening meal offer - we ventured out and so didnt experience this but would do if we returned for a longer stay. Breakfast was great -the hotel had picked up on us mentioning we were here for my boyfriend's birthday weekend skiing and for breakfast on his birthday had decorated our breakfast table beautifully and all the staff came over individually and wished him a happy birthday. The breakfast itself was great with plenty of choice.
I understand there is also a spa area, or certainly somewhere one can have a massage etc but we didnt get chance to explore this.
Location - good, very short walk up the hill from Grindelwald train station, 10 mins walk to the gondola.
I would usually opt for a contemporary, boutique-style hotel. The Caprice is not, and would never want to be, such a hotel. What it is, however, is welcoming, homely, traditional and comfortable, everything you would want from a mountain-side retreat. It is difficult to describe but it has a certain charm and we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay - would definitely stay again - either for ski trip or summer trip.
ps for anyone interested in the skiing, we were there the weekend of the ski world cup in March 2012. The Caprice was still very resonably priced and the skiing in the grindelwald area was excellent - will definitely return next season.
