“Great hotel, location and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2011

The Derby Hotel made our ski holiday to Grindelwald, at the begining of March. The location is ideal, being on the train station (electirc trains so no noise), means you can get to Kleine Schedigg ski area without walking anywhere. You can also get the train to Grindelwald Grund and a 3 minute walk to the gondolas takes you to the Manlichen ski area. Or you can take the trian(s) and cable cars to Murren ski area. The only ski area you cannot access by train is First, but this is also easy to access from the hotel, as the bus station is just accross the road, and a 3 minute bus journey takes you to the First gondola station. There is no better location in town than the Derby. The hotel itself is lovely, and very friendly. The food was amazing, and myself and my husband enjoyed every 5 course meal for the whole week, inlcuding the Swiss speaciality night and the fondue evening in the Cava restaurant - all included. The breakfast buffet was great, with lots of choice, and the service provided was really good. The views from the balconys of the rooms is amazing, and there is a lovely quiet seating area on the top floor with views to the front and back of the hotel. There are ski lockers and boot warmers in the basement. The lesiure facitlites are nothing to shout home about, the sauna is small - but there if you want it. There is a fridge in the room (though no kettle), a safe, a tv, built in radio and alarm clock, with daily maid service. Staff are very helpful and there is a mountain of information available at reception. I really enjoyed our stay here, and have already recommended it to family members who are looking to book a walking holiday at this hotel next year based on my rave reviews and holiday snaps.

Our room was comfortable and very clean (especially important to us), the staff were most courteous at all times and very helpful with all our requests. The food was consistently first class. All we could have asked for.
The rooms facing south (and thus with views of the Eiger) face on to the main road. We had a room on the north side - do not be put off by any photos that shows that this overlooks a railway station. The trains are very quiet and do not run at night!

I stayed 2 wonderful nights here while ago but still remember this hotel until now. It is such a warm and cosy hotel in a great location. The rooms were clean and quiet. There were 3 of of us and the room was huge. We drank water straight out of the tap and it tasted just like spring water! Breakfast had a good selection of foods including many varieties of hams and cheese. We also had dinner there once and the food quality and value was great. Internet costed an arm and a leg though. Highly recommended overall.

The receptionist Claudine was extremely friendly and so very helpful. An absolute asset to this lovely hotel. Actually, all the staff was great. The location of the hotel couldn't have been more perfect. The decor & the cleaniness of this wonderful hotel was top rate. The breakfast was of outstanding quality and just delightful. We were full to even past lunch time. Hotel Derby should be very proud of themselves. Thank you for our fantastic stay! Highly recommend Hotel Derby.

We stayed at the hotel over new year and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! The rooms were very clean and on two occasions we recieved complimentary chocolate from the hotel which was a lovely extra touch. The staff were quite frankly fantastic! So friendly and helpful and always ready to give advice or just a chat. The location was fantastic. Literally step out the hotel onto the train platform which was extremely convenient for skiing purposes. However this was not an issue noise-wise or view-wise as you may think. Our room overlooked this station and it did not spoil the view at all. Its also just minutes from the bus station and the centre of the village making it an ideal base. The food was amazing! 5 courses every night- but quantity certainly didn't out do quality in this case! The village of Grindelwald itself is beautiful. Plenty of bars and restaurants to cater for every taste. We recommend the Avocado bar for Apres ski :). All the Swiss people we met were absolutely lovely and the village really comes alive at new year- so make the most of it!
Definitely recommend the hotel and village to everyone- we had a fantastic time and would certainly go back in the future :)

We stayed at the Hotel Derby in Grindelwald for two nights in October. We had stayed at the Sunstar Hotel there previously but this time wanted a more simple hotel. The Derby was perfect for us. It has been renovated reasonably recently, and the decoration was really lovely. The lobby, small bar and large dining room - split nicely into several sections so you do not feel you are eating in a huge space - all had a really "mountain" atmosphere. Our room - a Junior suite on the 1st floor - was large, well furnished and comfortable with a very nice big bathroom. We also had access to a shared, large roof terrace which presented us with the only problem we had with the hotel!

The door to the terrace did not shut properly and was extremely difficult to lock. We struggled with it and eventually went to the desk to tell them about it and to ask them to change our room as I did not feel at all secure with an unlocked door to a terrace easily accessible by others. The person we spoke with at the Reception initially told us that it was the "local law" that doors to terraces and balconies are not able to be locked. I pointed out that we are from Switzerland and that this is certainly not the law in the Valais, and that i found it most odd. She then countered by saying that there was "no crime in Grindelwald" and I had nothing to worry about. I told her that either the door be fixed - as it did have a lock but it would not engage!! - or she could move us to another room. she then changed her tone and said she would ask the head housekeeper to come and take a look at it. We went back upstairs to wait and then took a close look at the door and saw what was keeping it from locking - the frame seemed to have warped and the bottom and top hooks on the latches would not engage. My husband managed to get them to work - by force! - and the door locked. We then told the desk not to bother to send anyone and kept the door locked for the rest of our stay. Luckily it had a small window in it, which we could open at night.

It was clear to me that this woman did not want to be bothered with our complaint (which was a rather valid one!). I think the Hotel Management should make sure that she is told to take guests' comments seriously and not to invent silly excuses. When we left the hotel we reminded them of the problem so hopefully it will be fixed.

As to the rest of our stay -- we took the Half board option which is usually good value. At the Derby this means you have an excellent buffet breakfast, with some of the best bread I have ever eaten (!) and a five course dinner. Starter, soup, salad, main course and dessert. I rather think they could have eliminated the soup, but it was a tasty and well balanced meal. And the portions were huge!! I could not begin to finish it all. The additional charge for this was 35frs per person per day and thus it was extremely good value as well. The Dining room staff were friendly and attentive in the evenings, a bit rushed off their feet in the mornings! As the hotel was full one could expect this.

The hotel is located right on the platform at the station. Literally - on the platform! And on the other side is the main road coming into town. At no time did any noise bother us, so we had the benefits of the extremely central location and no inconvenience from the sound levels. It is across the street from the Sports Centre so if you wish to swim, skate etc that is very close by. I think for skiers it is an ideal location as you can simply leave the hotel and board your train to the slopes!!

So - aside from the not-so-helpful woman at Reception on the first day (and I never saw her there again!!) - our stay at the Derby worked out well and I can certainly recommend it to anyone who wishes to spend time in Grindelwald. As an aside I should also say that we visited Wengen, Murren and Lauterbrunnen as well as Interlaken on the same trip and only Grindelwald was humming with activity. All the other places were so quiet that it seemed more like November there than early October.

The Derby Hotel is in a great location right in town and a short walk to everything. We literally walked off the train at Grindelwald and into the Hotel (literally a one minute walk). This is such a relief if you have backpacks and suitcases. No need for taxis or pick ups.

Trains dont travel after a certain time at night, so they do not disturb you.

We got a standard double at 206chf per night and added half board at 35chf per person.

After hiking all day and being exhausted and hungry, it was great to shower and just come down to a decent 5 course meal in the hotel. I can be quite a fussy eater, but the food was really nice. After looking around Grindelwald, there is no way we could have gotten better value anywhere else. I ate everything because I was enjoying it and it was fun having five courses (although we both left very full....).

If you stay at this place and expect to be hiking all day, come back starving and wanting a comfortable good place to stay and a feast at night - this place will suit you perfectly.

It was a few minutes walk to cafes and shops. It was about a fifteen min walk to First Gondola up the hill (or you could catch the bus if you really wanted too I guess). From First there are some of the most spectacular awesome hikes - some of the most memorable that I've ever done.

The only negative about the Derby was on saturday night quite a few teenagers congregated till late around the train station as if it was their local hangout...and made a bit of noise. It only happened on a sat night and we were there 3 nights.

Overall, if you just want a nice comfortable, good value,, well located place to stay, and want to be able to easily walk with lots of luggage from Grindelwald Station to your hotel....then this is perfect.
