My family and me stayed in type Ried room in hotel, for 6 nights.
Hotel’s location was fantastic! Gstaad is 8 to 10 minutes train journey. Hotel is 4 to 5 minutes walk from the Schönried train station. On the way, to and fro from station, there is tempting hotel’s tennis clay court. You can hire the tennis kit from the nearby sports shop and start playing. On the other side of the hotel, there is beach volleyball court, owned by the hotel. You can sometimes watch professional players practicing on the volleyball court, from the hotel’s restaurant.
Negative point about the location is that the hotel is directly situated on the road, with the main entrance just about on the main road connecting to Gstaad.
Hotel’s reception was rather poor. We arrived in the hotel at 9.00PM, after a long tiring 4 hours journey from Zurich, but no one bothered to ask us whether we liked to have a drink or whether we were hungry, for dinner. After going through official formalities and being allocated a room, it was almost 9.30 PM that we realized that we were hungry and we should now go and eat. I went to reception and enquired for meals, as we had taken a 6 nights half board package that included dinner, but was bluntly refused and told that dinner timings were over, as it was until 9.00 PM. So, we had to go to some other restaurant in hotel where we paid for the exorbitantly costly food. I think, in the very first place, when we arrived in the hotel they should have asked for or at least informed us about the dinner timings. After all, the personal touch and consideration does matter.
There is no travel desk in the hotel. Hotel receptionists were always busy, attending other customers or doing other management chores. Sometimes, they were welcoming and helpful in telling us about the places to visit, but most of the times they were reluctant and stingy. In fact, once I was told quite annoyingly that why don’t we go to Schönried Tourist information centre? I think they should have a dedicated travel desk rather than making us feel guilty for disturbing them.
Surely, the senior management team appeared arrogant in their manners. Sometimes, in fact they were rude especially Mrs Foidl who, I think, does not know how to behave politely and courteously.
I wanted to buy Swiss flexi pass from the Schönried train station, but the station in charge told me to submit proof of our identities i.e. passport’s photocopy, as flexi pass is for foreign citizens only. The reception at the hotel has a printer and photocopier. So, I requested the receptionist to photocopy the passports. There were only 2 pages to be photocopied, as I photocopied 2 passports together. For my surprise, they charged me for 2 pages, 1 Swiss Franc each. You know! 2 Swiss Francs hardly matter, when you are spending more than 4000 Swiss Francs for the trip. But, all it shows is their cheapness, low standard, and their misdemeanour. It creates bad impression. It exposes them.
On the positive side, hotel’s restaurant staffs were very warm, welcoming and friendly. The hotel has 3 beautiful swimming pools, 1 warm salty indoor and 2 outdoors, one warm salty and another fresh, slightly cold. Located on the basement, hotel’s wellness and beauty centre: Vitalita and spa were excellent, very nice and clean.
When leaving, I asked for hotel’s comment card. To my surprise, I was told they don’t have comment cards or anything of that sort in this hotel. This is the first time I have ever stayed in a hotel where there aren’t comment cards available. It shows nothing but apathy, a lack of desire to review and improvise further.
To sum up, overall, we had a good experience in the hotel except for few isolated incidents. But, don’t you think so; we go on holidays to relax and this we know for sure that we didn’t have a 100% relaxing experience.
