We were in Zermatt in October and took the three cable cars that it takes to reach the Glacier Palace at Klein Matterhorn. Looking up from the town of Zermatt where you catch the first cable car, it was absolutely beautiful. The weather in Zermatt was 22c, sunny and calm but when we got to the top at 3883 meters it was -5c with 80 kph winds and blowing snow. It actually felt more like blowing ice crystals. We loved it!
From the cable car station at the summit you walk through a long tunnel which has a restaurant at the end that serves very good meals. I had some fantastic soup but I guess anything that was hot would have tasted good.
The other highlight was the Glacier Palace which is tunnels and rooms cut into the glacier. It's quite interesting but you're surrounded by ice, so it is cold. At 3883 m.a.s.l. the air is quite thin so you can feel a little light headed for a while so watch your step as you're moving around. There's also an outdoor viewing platform that gives you a 360 degree view of the mountains around you. Unfortunately on the day we were there is was a little cloudy, to say the least.
On the way up in the last of the cable cars (the big ones), there were only 6 people, but on the way down were packed shoulder to shoulder with a ski team that was up there practicing. They had all their equipment and skis and I was a little uncomfortable with that many people on the car at one time, but those big cable cars are rated to carry 100 people, and we only had maybe 60 plus equipment, so we were well within the tolerances.
We were with a tour group of about 40 people in total but only myself, my two sisters and my brother-in-law went to the top out of the entire group. I'm so glad we did. It's a memory that I will remember for as long as I live.
Don't miss it. If I was were to go to Switzerland again and only had the choice of doing one thing, this would be it. Fantastic.
