“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2008

We booked a weekend at the l'Aubier as it came recommended by locals. We booked a superior room which according to their website are bright, spacious and have a balcony, large windows or direct access to the garden.

Granted the surroundings of the hotel are beautiful, with a view on the lake, however the room we stayed in was small, had tiny windows, was quite dark and did not have either a balcony or access to the garden. It can be best described as a student's attic room with a luxurious bathroom.

Next day we asked if we could have another room as this one did not quite match our expectations. No other was available according to the staff and as their website did not use the word "all rooms" they did not consider their text misleading. I must say the service was quite disappointing in this respect.

The food is good and the surroundings are beautiful, but make sure you get a 100% confirmation that you will be having a bright room with either a balcony or access to the garden and stay away from the attic rooms. I think about half of their room actually give you what they promise. There are so many other beautiful hotels out there, that next time I would definitely select another.

We have been to the Aubier restaurant many times, we were acually neighbours for a while (we rented an appartment for a year that was next door to he hotel).

L'Aubier is well known internationally among veggie "foodies" for its bio menus but they also serve meat and dairy dishes from their own bio farm. The food is (as to be expected for this type of venture) a little more expensive than in other local restaurants.

What is irritating at L'Aubier is the attitude of the staff. It is as if they position themselves above the clients they serve like they are "gospels of righteousness" in the bio food world.

They are deaf to any complaints - even when for example we were a large wedding party and had ordered a menu in advance - the chef miscalculated the quantities and there was insufficient for everyone in the party. Rather than admit this and offer an alternative, they gave increasingly smaller portions for each guest until the last guest had the equivalent of a child's portion. All this for full price of course!

Even though we enjoyed the interesting menus, I refuse to go there any more, irritated by their arrogant and aloof attitude.
