“contemporary hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

The hotel decor is very contemporary - inside and out. Your room key controls the lighting. Lots of horizontal surfaces to hold open luggage. Plenty of storage space if you need it. We were disappointed with the bathroom. Although it looked great, the faucet in the sink made the water splash everywhere, and the shower in the tub sprayed onto the floor. The bathtub must be designed for Europeans - too deep and too long for a nice soak. The breakfast buffet was included and of excellent quality including yoghurt, fruit, eggs, pastries, and made-to-order omelettes, pancakes and waffles. Located near the KKLM centre and the railway station, it was a noisy and busy area for the 75th anniversary festivities. Face cloths and adapters available for the asking. We discovered that the Swiss do not use ice in their drinks, preferring their water cool not cold. Free WIFI available in your room using your own devices.

I would definitely stay here again!

Pros:
-perfect location within walking distance of train station (about three blocks) and easy to get to lake area
-helpful staff although sticklers at times
-rooms have a/c and very spacious (especially for Europe)
-the thai restaurant across the street is really great
-rooms quiet and made for good night's sleep
-onsite restaurant and bar

Cons:
-pillows way too thin...ask for more & ask for a sheet to sleep with (just have a duvet)
-staff helpful but "rigid"
-add a spa....although The Palace about 20 minutes away was awesome and appreciated their recommendation
-shower only had half door so we got water all over the floor when showering
-room baseboard was taped up...they could use a once over on things

I would definitely stay here again...if I was going back I would also check out Balances, Montopol

Cheers!

Stayed in the hotel in the middle of May for five nights.Had the most memorable and comfortable stay. Both my spouse and me are hoteliers and were completely surprised at the quality of service from the team at the hotel. The front office staff helped us plan our itinerary after checking the weather everyday. On the day it was raining in Lucerne they suggested a trip to Lugano which was bright and sunny.A special mention to Alicia who ensured all our needs were taken care of.If we were walking out without umbrellas she would call out and hand them over to us.
The breakfast spread was the best that we had in our entire trip in which one could order for fresh waffles, pancakes, eggs, etc.
The location of the hotel is excellent as it is right next to the train station with supermarkets and eateries. There is an interesting restaurant next to the hotel with the most amazing Shawarma rolls open till midnight. The rooms are spacious and well kept. Overall outstanding hospitality.

Terrible ! seems they are saving a fortune on salaries ! the room was not even dusted before we were checked in. even the trey for the toiletries had marks of previous bottles..is washing marks of shampoo and body lotion so difficult ? the writing table had some odd paint marks. we left for site seeing next day, and on return we found our center table as dusted, the used coffee mugs only half cleaned ! they had big marks of left over coffee still at the bottom, the iron table and iron still at the same place as we left, found the coffee maker on the table as we had left and only coffee sachets were replaced...the person conveniently forgot to put sugar sachets ! the toiletries were replaced but the trey still had the old marks. Even about the restaurant, we waited for some 20 minutes to place our order..only two ladies were assigned there to wait at the tables for some 80 pax present. they were trying hard but could not cope ! we simply left and ate outside. The spa was closed for renovation . not worth !

Room Tip: Just avoid !

We stay there for two nights in August. The check-in was very smooth and we received a free upgrade to a junior suite (thank you for that). The breakfast was good and the overall service was what you do except for an hotel of this standing. The health club was closed and it would have been nice to have an email warning us about this before our travel.

Two small negative comments, the bed in the junior suite was big (which was great) but the duvet was not meant for this size of bed. Our first night was not as could as it could have been and after having request a second small duvet all was in order. The bar service in the evening was slow (when a staff member was at the bar) and we had to go somewhere else when two buses of tourist arrived as the hotel staff where completely swamped.

Will we come back? yes definitely as the hotel is very well situated and overall is very good

We were allocated this hotel as an extension after a wonderful Viking River Cruise from Amsterdam to Basel.

When we eventually checked in we were told that we had been upgraded to a Business room from a Lake View room. However our Business room appeared to not be ready. There were several problems: the Minibar was empty, the carpeted floor had obviously not been cleaned, with several long blonde hairs visable, an obvious layer of dust on all surfaces (i.e. the bedside tables, the areas around the windows and the shelving around and below the safe, a half empty bottle of water under the bed one side and an empty packet the other, only one wine glass, no whitener/milk for the tea/coffee, a broken table and poor drainage in the bathroom sink and tub, large greasy marks/hand prints on the inside window over-looking the lake and a drawer containing currency and plastic cutlery obviously left by a previous occupant. Most of these problems were reported to the reception desk the first night of our stay as we went out to dinner. When we left two days later the only thing that had been rectified was the Minibar.

Dear Guest,

We do sincerely apologize for this occured problem. We are sorry that we did not meet your expectations and would like to ensure you, that this kind of mistake does not correspond to our standard service.

We discussed your issue with the responsible departments Front Office and Housekeeping. However, we would kindly like to emphasize at this point, that your complaint at the Front Desk has been immediately transfered to the Houskeeping department, which corrected the mistake. (Cleaning and Minibar). Following the room was checked by a gouverness.

We thank you for being our guest and for taking the time to write a review.

I have to admit, that this can be pricey hotel, however I love the location as during the festival, you are far enough from all of the music, so that you can sleep if you like, but close enough to enjoy the activities, if you like. It is very close to the train station (mall), and there is a back way and a front way to get there, with food stops along the way, if you like. As well as a post office, located very nearby. The hotel is well within walking distance of many interesting sites, including the Lion, the Chapel Bridge, Wagner Museum, The Rosengart Museum, and of course Kunstmuseum and the KKL, and just shy of the festival location. The staff was amazing, and I have to admit, I had an amazing room with both views of the lake and the snowcapped mountains in the distance. This was very cool. In addition I have stayed here in the past and had lake views, which are indeed amazing. The room size and bed, were quite ample, although, clearly as a business class design, they are very functional with a mod twist. The king bed was extremely comfortable. Once I got the hang of the shower water strength (1 night), I avoided flooding the bathroom floor. The staff was exceptionally accommodating, when another hotel booking on the second leg of my trip canceled my reservation and I had to change the reservation at the last minute. I cannot say enough about the restaurant and the staff. They provided a very interesting appetizer, which was a sort of canopy, but simply delicious. Rather than search for interesting food, I actually just stayed and enjoyed the excellent food in the restaurant a couple of evenings along with the sort of lake view from the inside complete with AC. Back to the rooms, I loved the sun shades, which also allow you to be a little more energy efficient. I have only stayed on either the 4th or 5th floors (and one year it was during the 8/1 festivities), so it's always been an amazing stay. When all is hot and sticky after a day of walking here and there and doing whatever, the air conditioning is a welcome relief. I actually also have to comment on something which struck me this time, the outside windows are cleaned (who knows when), impeccably. I notice this because I often take photos in the morning or evening and it strikes me there were no streaks or dust lines, or bird droppings on these windows (having recently had a bird carene into my window at home). Also, this may seem a small thing, but they have ample electrical plugs in order to charge your items if needed (which I did). I have to thank Dominque and all of the staff for their very attentive assistance, and for actually making me feel like a friend upon return at the end of the evening by asking about my experiences during the day. Of course, not if they were assisting other guests. I trade between this hotel and another on the other side of the train station, however I think this one has won out as the go to location.

Room Tip: I don't think they have a pool, but all of the other amenities are quite wonderful.
