I must say that this mountain is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been!
I almost didn't go because I had been warned that autumn weather might not be great but the day was bright and so off I went. I wondered if I might find directions confusing as I don't speak German, I should have realised that everything was made easy.
I just missed the 9.15 am boat, and got on the next one. I had a half tax rail card and with that I paid 54.50. It reAlly was worth it. I got off at Vitznau and just followed everyone the few steps to the train up the mountain. The views were fabulous all the way up, but once at the top they were magnificent. I sat for ages eating my picnic and reading, i didn't want to go down.
I walked down quite a way, the path follows the track most of the way. I took the shorter steeper route which was a mistake as the path was a little slippery and I have to say that I couldn't find my way all of the way down - I got to the part where there was a bridge and tunnel and could not work out where to go. I had to trudge a little way back up. In retrospect, If I had known how clear the path was from the spA hotel stop upwards I think I would have got off here and walked upwards as my physical challenge for the day.
The people in the spa were clearly having a great time. I have a rule never to travel without a bikini and did not follow it this time - to my regret. Next time I will remember it.
So I caught the train for the last couple of stops and got straight onto the boat. I was back in Lucerne at just about 5 pm. My legs recovered about 5 days later!
If you only have half a day for the trip it would be easy to do - by taking the train each way.
