Found this hotel in the Rick Steves book and after looking at hotel reviews and websites for many hours, we decided to book. We were not sorry. Lucerne is really expensive and this is one of the more reasonably-priced places located within a few minutes walking distance to both the train station and the Old City that we could find. The location was great.
The room was a bit small for American taste but very comparable to everywhere we stayed. It was new, clean, and modern. We stayed in a room with our own bathroom - that was just one of our preferences. There was an elevator - the tiniest one I have ever seen and it made me laugh every time we got on. But it worked and we were happy to have it!
Breakfast was very enjoyable and included an espresso/cappuccino machine - we are coffeeholics so that was great. We arrived very late our first night and ended up eating at the restaurant on the ground floor. It was very nice and the staff brought us complimentary "fresh cheese", which was delicious.
Lucerne was where we needed to do some laundry and the staff was prepared with directions to a place we could drop off while we went to the top of Mr. Rigi and pick up after returning.
We stayed on the side of the hotel next to the church bells, which rang on the hour but they didn't keep us awake, although we did opt to keep the windows closed because of that (and the local Italian fans of the European Cup Italian win in the semi-finals - reminded me of American high school football fans after a win).
Given our budget and this location, I would have no trouble in recommending the Hotel Goldener Stern.
