“Good location, good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2012

Found this hotel in the Rick Steves book and after looking at hotel reviews and websites for many hours, we decided to book. We were not sorry. Lucerne is really expensive and this is one of the more reasonably-priced places located within a few minutes walking distance to both the train station and the Old City that we could find. The location was great.
The room was a bit small for American taste but very comparable to everywhere we stayed. It was new, clean, and modern. We stayed in a room with our own bathroom - that was just one of our preferences. There was an elevator - the tiniest one I have ever seen and it made me laugh every time we got on. But it worked and we were happy to have it!
Breakfast was very enjoyable and included an espresso/cappuccino machine - we are coffeeholics so that was great. We arrived very late our first night and ended up eating at the restaurant on the ground floor. It was very nice and the staff brought us complimentary "fresh cheese", which was delicious.
Lucerne was where we needed to do some laundry and the staff was prepared with directions to a place we could drop off while we went to the top of Mr. Rigi and pick up after returning.
We stayed on the side of the hotel next to the church bells, which rang on the hour but they didn't keep us awake, although we did opt to keep the windows closed because of that (and the local Italian fans of the European Cup Italian win in the semi-finals - reminded me of American high school football fans after a win).
Given our budget and this location, I would have no trouble in recommending the Hotel Goldener Stern.

The hotel's location is decent... but so are 30 other hotels around that area.

I was excited about my room when I first walked into the lobby, because it looked cozy and well decorated. But little did I know, the furnishing of the room screams cheap and corner-cutting furnishing (it looked like a low-end YMCA room.. you really have to see it for yourself).

The table, closet, and bed-side tables are made out of the exact same material/color/method - three pieces of grey-colored ply wood. One piece of ply wood for the top, and two other pieces as the legs. The bed was a springy mattress that caves-in in the middle, which was not very comfortable for my wife and I to sleep in.

My expectations for a 3-star hotel are pretty low... but come on. This hotel was not the cheapest (in terms of price) I stayed at in Switzerland, but it was clearly the cheapest in terms of room quality.

Hotel was centrally located & extremely bright & clean! Chose hotel based on 1 room for family of 4, location & price but did not expect such a pleasant experience. Staff were helpful & welcoming. Restaurant & lobby freshly renovated & clean. Included breakfast was deliciou. Free Wifi. My kids loved the tiny elevator!
The room was cozy for 4 but comfortable. Spotless & clean with fresh linens. As others have mentioned, no air conditioning means open windows at night but we didn't have any noise issues.
Would not hesitate to stay there again or recommend!

The hotel is in a great location; it is just a quick walk to anywhere you want to go. The rooms were recently redone and in great shape. The shower was a little small, but overall the bathroom was sufficient. There is no AC, so it was hot at night. We kept the windows open so that helped. The street noise wasn't a problem for us, but it might be for some people. The elevator is tiny, so we stuck with the stairs. Breakfast was sufficient and had a variety of options. Wifi worked well. I would stay here again as long as it wasn't supposed to get too hot out.

Stayed here on a Saturday night which may influence some of my comments.
The good - proximity to river, easy walk to old town via bridges. Clean room, comfortable bed, helpful polite and friendly staff. Single rooms available. One of the few places in Lucerne under 200CHF/night. 10 minute walk from the station. Breakfast was pretty good and included in the price. Elevator in the hotel.
The bad - room is very small, shower is tiny and prone to flooding bathroom floor as the shower curtain wraps itself around your legs and water escapes ... Room was also very warm, and although there was a very small fan in the room, it made sleeping difficult. No top sheet on the bed- either a doona or nothing. On a hot night there isn't a lot of choice! The bed is also very low so someone who has hip problems may have trouble getting in and out of bed. Elevator is made for one small person with small suitcase.
The noisy - try sleeping with windows open on a hot night! The partying in the street finally ended at about 5.30am; along with people shouting/singing etc and glass breaking there was the regular roar of motorbikes in the street.

Room Tip: If you chose a room on the other side of the hotel, be aware you will have to contend with church be...

Basic, but clean rooms. The hotel is next to a shopping area and very close, less than a 5 minute walk, to the lake. The staff definitely exceeded expectations. My daughter fell while we were out walking around and skinned her elbow so we had to go back to the room. The two young men working that evening quickly gave us a first aid kit and a handful of swiss chocolates to try to get my daughter to stop crying. They were really great with her and you could tell they were genuinely good guys. We decided to eat dinner there; while very expensive, the food was exquisite and of course the service was top rate.
