“Very avoidable”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2009

The best thing about Hotel Spatz is the location - it is very conveniently located - there is a bus top right in front of the hotel and it is just a short ride away from town center.

The hotel staff are also quite helpful - they helped us carry our luggage up the 2 flights of steps and also lent us an umbrella even after we had checked out!

But the room leaves a lot to be desired. It is economical and one understands that one cant expect much for the price. But basic cleanliness and hygiene has to be present! The sheets looked dirty and stained, the duvets were dirty and my entire body started itching and breaking into rashes when i got into the bed. In the end, I had to put my own shawl on the sheet and sleep on it. I was glad when my 1 night stay got over!

My wife, son and I stayed here for two nights. The room was average with basic facilities. Bathroom was quite small but well equipped. Matresses and pillows were too soft. Breakfast was also basic. Omellette could be ordered extra. Staff were friendly. There's a PC for internet connection but sharing at the counter. The main advantage is it's location, a mere 10-15 mins walk to the city centre. Bus stop is right in front of the hotel. For those driving in, access is easy from the motorway. Hotel parking is free but open air. A disadvantage is there is no elevator. Could be a little proble for those with very heavy luggage. All in all for the price offered, it quite value for money.

We booked this hotel for our family traveling to Lucerne for our wedding. The price and location can not be beat. Its right on the #1 bus line so it is a short bus trip from the main train station. It is also a short bus ride to the Pilatus cable car station. The hotel was clean and the staff was very nice.
Each room had a priviate bath with breakfast included for the price. Again, you can not beat the price for the location!
I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a cost effective hotel in Lucerne.

Well, it is really a tough review, because we stayed at a really nice hotel in Lucerne for a couple of nights prior and actually looked for this hotel - mainly to see if we could save on costs, which we did.
If you are willing to spend less, you should expect less, so reviews here should be respectful of such. This hotel was at least $100 USD cheaper per night than the previous hotel, so in all fairness, you should NOT think you'll be getting great meals or fancy beds, etc. and the traffic noise is most obvious if the windows are open.
Yes, the place did smell of cigarettes and that should be worked on and yes, the beds didn't have a flat sheet and you would sleep with a comforter. However, if you're willing to pay at least $100 - 125 more at another hotel , then this place may not be for you.
We stayed at the very top floor and it was a pain to bring luggage up and down the stairs, but the room itself was quite spacious, although the bathroom left a bit to be desired. The shower and bathtup is right along the sloping roof so it isn't possible to stand up and take a shower (a bit of a nuisance) - you get creative when you shampoo your hair.
The best advice is to always check your room prior to accepting it and for us it was comfortable if you can stand the smell of cigarettes, and really, we weren't there to stay in a grand place and were more interested in the outdoors of a fabulous place like Lucerne. Other rooms are nearly as spacious in this hotel, but the smell of cigarette smoke I believe is in all of them.
Overall, it is a good but not great place to stay. At least there is something to have for breakfast, and the rooms are warm in the winter because they have central heating. I can accept the accommodations but maybe not the ever-present smell of cigarette smoke.

  • Liked — If price is a consideration, this place is worth considering.
  • Disliked — Smell of cigarette smoke.

The hotel is lacking in its furnishing but I suppose adequate in this manner if you are just looking for a place to lay your head.

The problem begins when you have to open the windows to allow for ventilation. The hotel sits on a busy main road right atop a busy bus stop that runs all night long. We had booked the two room apartment for five persons and our window was directly over the bus stop.

The continental breakfast that is included consists of juice, coffee, or tea and a basket of bread (not even good bread) and some butter, jams, and a two small packets of cream cheese. On top of that the coffee is terrible.

There a several nicer hotels along the water that I would recommend over the Hotel Spatz.

  • Disliked — Location, noise, and breakfast.

This was sold to us on the internet as a 3 star hotel with modern spacious rooms - really? When we complained about the facilities we were told that it had been downgraded to 2 stars due mainly to the lack of lift - ha!

The hotel is on a very busy junction so it is impossible to sleep with the windows open.
The room was TINY, I could just about wheel my case around the bed.
No lift and lots of changes in floor level (trip hazards) and a serious need for redecoration.

However our main complaint was 'the breakfast', 1 slice white bread, 1 slice brown bread, 1 roll plus a few pots of jam and butter, hardly a breakfast. When we went to complain we were told that it was standard continental breakfast, another guest commented that it was the worst breakfast he'd had in 2 weeks, more like 2 years we thought.

Terrible hotel! They claim to be a 3 star hotel but I don't believe it. This was the worst hotel we stayed in on our trip. Room was tiny and needed painting. When you sat down in the bathroom your head is literally over the sink! Was too far from city center and noisy traffic if you want the windows open. Only coffee/tea, rolls and jelly for breakfast. Pay a little more and find someplace else. They had free internet (1 PC) but it was always being used by other disappointed guests looking for a different place to stay.
