“If you can afford it, stay somewhere else”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2013

This was our least favorite hotel on our month long trip to Europe. On the plus side, it was budget friendly, and the linens and bathroom were clean. The housekeeping staff was nice, as well. On the minus side, the check-in woman at Hotel Baslertor was not nice. I was able to ignore one particularly snide comment upon check-in, but when we had a small problem with the room, she was not only unhelpful, but unbelievably rude and condescending. I was so upset I cried in our room, and it unfortunately got our time in Switzerland off to a bad start. First impressions last a while. Fortunately, we met other people in town who were nice, and that helped a great deal. It was in the low 90s when we visited, and there is no air conditioning in the hotel, and the pull chain on the fan in our room was broken off at the base, so it was permanently set on low, which didn’t help much! We managed to tie dental floss to the chain so we could pull it and increase the speed to high. That, and keeping our door open, which allowed a breeze to blow through from the river (the window was open across the landing) made it bearable. No picnicking is allowed in the room (which was extremely tiny for our family of five), and the snacks in the machine on our landing were very expensive--5 Swiss francs for a soda, and 3 for a candy bar. Switzerland is expensive, but that is ridiculous. We stayed in a number of hotels and apartments during our stay in Europe, and we liked them all--except for this one! If you can afford something better, stay somewhere else.

Stayed here 4 nights after arriving by train. On arriving in Lucerne it was raining heavily so caught Taxi, cost around 15chf but worth not getting soaked, otherwise easy 10 min walk, once you know the way. Check in/out and breakfast is across road at main Hotel. Did not have their Breakfast, at 18chf per person, thought it was a bit expensive so made other arrangements and ate breakfast on the run, usually bircher muesli from café across road.
No staff members in attendance at this building, so any questions etc. were answered at the other hotel, which was no hassle really. Rooms were clean but a bit dated, beds were comfortable, we slept well. Location was great with the river and bridges really close.
Price was expensive 150chf per night + tax, but compared to what else I could find in Lucerne this was very reasonable.

We stayed here for a night passing through to Interlaken, and the location is great. Just across the river you can walk to all the major sights.

Breakfast was expensive (18E), but you'll learn that all the food in Switzerland is pretty pricey. We stayed in the guest-house (not the main hotel) because of the size of our party and I got the sense it wasn't quite as nice as the other building. Our room was very small, but it was decently clean and we slept well.

Close to river so easy to locate but need some walking distance. Check in at its sister hotel branch opp. Near to old town and supermart nearby.

Free wifi is a plus but one staff not as friendlt as the other. A flask of hot water cost 5eur which dont stay hot for long.. dampen our mood.

An old pension hostel. No lift so heavy luggage travellers beware.

Stayed here for 2 nights durin our Europe trip. Location is excellent.
There r no lifts and stairwell is too steep. It is ideal for travellers with less baggage otherwise u may stress ur back too much.
This hotel has two buildings situated on de same street, just couple f doors apart.
Expensive.
Otherwise it is good.

Great value on a real sleeper in the Old Town area of Lucerne. A historic old 5-story building (no elevator). We stayed in a loft room that was older than the United States of America. Literally. The wooden beams in the walls and ceilings were enormous and ancient. Recently re-done, everything else was quite cute. The beds, linens, comforters & pillows were new and surprisingly comfortable. Check in at its affiliate, the Baslertof, across the street. Walking distance to train station & everything in central Luzern.

For what you pay, the rooms are a very good value. It cost us CHF132/night for 4 people. Rooms were clean and nice and large enough for the 4 adults in our family. Helpful front desk. There are actually two hotels (one accross the street from the other) and only one manned front desk. It is not as plush as come hotels and not on the lacke or river, but great place if you want to save money. We would stay there again. 8 to 10 minute walk from main train station. We did not use the resturant, pool, etc. We were there to see Switzerland, not hang out in the hotel.

Room Tip: I was told that the elevator on one of the buildings did not go to the 4th floor.
