“Excellent location and room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

We were given a room with a view of the river and mountains - wonderful. Location is excellent, close to all the tourist sites and to the main railway station (5 mins walk). The room was spacious and had tea and coffee making facility - not all that common in Europe from our experiences. Adequate breakfast. Very courteous and helpful staff.

Stayed here in June 2012 in a second floor room overlooking the river. Room was very spacious and quite comfortable but sharp edges on the bed! Only had breakfast here which was of good standard (continental only, nothing hot available apart from boiled eggs) and served in the very old fashioned and small restaurant - apparently the restaurant is highly rated for dinner. Staff were always friendly and helpful, e.g. rushing out to replenish breakfast rolls from a local baker when they ran out. The location is great, in the old city and beside the river and there are many bars and restaurants along the keyside and in the narrow streets around the hotel. Overall, this is a really quirky place, with narrow bendy corridors, a tiny lift, interesting decor, no real reception area other than a counter, but a great atmosphere - a real change from a standard hotel chain.

Room Tip: Go for a river view upstairs.

The restaurant is located inside Schiff Hotel, overlooks the Reuss River (booking a table near a window is a must!)
The atmosphere is warm, woody, soft.
Schiff serves traditional Swiss food, well cooked, in generous portion; we tasted one of the best chügelipastete (a puff- pastry shell filled with diced veal and mushrooms in a creamy sauce) in Lucerne.
Considering the fact that dining in Lucerne is quite expensive,Schiff is all in all affordable:
we spent around 60-70 Chf each for entree+main dish+beer.

I booked a double standard room for one night at 132 euros through booking.com which rates this as a 3 stars hotel. When I arrived I found it was not what I expected: a small and gloomy entrance with a steep staircase, no hall, no common spaces, a small counter instead of a reception desk, smell in the hallways. I would define it as a restaurant with rooms. Our room had shabby and poor furniture; there were two beds without headboard and an old CRT tv. As I doubted it was a 3 star hotel, I went to the Luzern Tourist Office and I found out this hotel is not classified at all. No stars. When checking out, the receptionist confirmed the hotel is not classified and that they are not responsible for what booking.com publishes. When I pointed out that their site is however misleading (www.hotel-schiff-luzern.ch), she granted us about 10 Euros discount. Don't let this happen to you.

Schiff Hotel is very well located in Lucerne facing the Reuss River, the historical bridge and a very nice church. Breakfast room is great overlooking the river as well. The staff was nice and the hotel was not too expensive, but clearly the property would need a ramp-up (both common area and room). Wifi did not work properly in the rooms, but it is for free.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the river

Good size room, lovely and clean, close to train and all things around. Good position right on the water front. Has restaurant on the bottom floor right beside lots of others, so take your choice. We got a bit lost finding it, but after you get off the train and come out, turn left and the bridge after the Chapel is the one to walk down and as you look across you can see the Schiff- easy when you know. Breakfast not fancy but very adequit. Staff very helpful. No air-conditioner ,could get stuffy in the real heat, but doors open right up.

The Schiff offers good traditional food - but it's not outstanding in comparison to the other restaurants around. Staff is so so and sometimes the speed could be of concern. If you get a seat on the balcony - you're lucky. The Hotel infrastructure is somewhat old but functional. Nice selection of digestives
