“Nice and cosy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2014

We stayed at Renaissance for 1 night. We liked the room. Had free upgrade to deluxe. It is clean, comfortable and cosy. Nice view to a beautiful building across the road. Breakfast was tasty. Not a huge variety, but good enough. Receptionist was very friendly and helpful.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2014 via mobile

We enjoyed our two nights here. The lobby is refreshingly homely and the check-in experience was friendly and efficient. We drove in and were lucky to get one of the two parking species in the courtyard (CHF25 per night). Worth contacting them before arrival if you want this. Otherwise street parking is the only option. Our room was compact, but not tiny. Quite comfortable and nicely decorated. Very helpful front desk staff gave us some good restaurant tips.

This hotel has a great location, close to old town and the train station. The hotel is modern with large rooms and large bathrooms, both very up to date and very clean. Bathroom with large shower and tub with good water pressure was a welcome change from most hotels I had been in recently. The bed was the typical awesome Marriott comfort with a large selection of pillows. Great AC keep the room the temp I like. The breakfast was very nice. A large selection of hot and cold choices served in a very nice setting started each morning out right. Staff was very helpful and friendly. I will return next time I am in this area. I loved the city of Lucerne, it was beautiful and clean.

Easily found. If you're coming from the railway station, step out of the main entrance, turn left and cross the road onto the left side of Pilatusstraße. An easy, level walk in a straight line, 5 minutes tops, and you'll see the hotel on the corner. The main entrance is just down the side street.
Good location. Cross Pilatusstraße, cross a couple of blocks and you're at the Kapellbrücke. Lake ferries leave from the stance in front of the rail station and the bus to Pilatus (number 1, direction Kriens) leaves from outside the UBS opposite the rail station or from further down Pilatusstraße.
Small lobby, as befits the smallest Renaissance. Warm and professional welcome. MR gold got an upgrade to a larger room on the sixth floor, free breakfast (no exec lounge) and free wifi; if they're not comped they'll be expensive. The corridors are quite narrow - not a criticism per se; shoehorn a hotel into an old building and you end up living with compromises - and there were steps to negotiate for some of the rooms on the sixth and maybe other floors, so if you have mobility issues flag them before you book. The atmosphere overall, in the public areas, was more midrange independent than Marriott cookie cutter.
The room was large by European standards. Comfortable bed; couch; work desk and minimal storage to one side; empty minibar (good); small bathroom with standalone shower and the expected toiletries. You're in the attic, with beams here and there, and the view from my room was of surrounding roofs. Some rooms may have a view; ask in advance if it's important. Watch out for the bathroom windows : flimsy shades over clear glass rather than frosted, so be sure to lock them down firmly unless you're happy to turn round and find Lucerne's been watching you zumba in the shower. Couldn't fault the housekeeping or the fabric of the room. A minor point if you're monolingual and like your television is that there are only four English channels out of forty-something, which limits English language news to (iirc) the BBC.
Breakfast was the Marriott spread of hots, cold meats, cheeses, fruit and cereal. Staff were very nice, always on hand without hovering, and food was par for every other industrial Marriott I saw last year. Plenty of places to eat nearby and for staples/snacks at sane prices there's a large supermarket on the basement level of the rail station. Some of the hot snacks the supermarket puts out are decent for what they are.
I hate to end on a bugbear, as the staff were uniformly pleasant and making the best of the hand they've been dealt, but I have two. Neither's beyond repair, neither should put you off; I'm just particular about this stuff, and at this elevated price point they shouldn't exist.
First, in every other Marriott I've visited iBahn wifi isn't interrupted when your tablet/phone drops into power saving mode; wake, wifi back in business, renew every 24 hours. Here, it's swisscom and every time I left the device alone for a couple of minutes the whole login/logout spiel had to be repeated. By day two of this I was absolutely murderous.
More irritating was the booking process. Like most Marriott drones I book with the app or the website and neither has thrown a track until Lucerne. Booked the advance purchase rate through the website, confirmation to the inbox, off to work. Next thing I get is an email from an ostensibly Renaissance email address asking for my personal and credit card details to be emailed back or faxed to the hotel to confirm the booking. Given the recent warning that someone's tried to hack Marriott that took an email to Marriott to confirm that this was legit and accepted practise. That it may be, but I've yet to encounter it elsewhere, and I'd prefer not to encounter it again.

If you are looking for an American type hotel in Lucern, this would be the one!
The room sizes are a nice size, the beds and linens are very comfortable and the bathrooms are spacious enough. (however, the showers are on the smaller side)
There is a bar/restaurant off the lobby, too. However, the most important feature of this hotel is the location. Just a 5 minute walk from the train station and boat docks. Making it very easy to lug your suitcases down the street one block or catch a boat for an excursion. Old Town is only about a 10 to 15 minute walk passing many nice stores and restaurants.
We were glad our hotel was not right in Old Town as it gets busy and could be loud. The lake views are nice but as you tour the city, you get many lake and mountain views. No need to spend the extra money on these upgrades. The Renaissance was a reasonable price and has the amenities that will make your stay comfortable. Many breakfast choices, a friendly staff that does speak English, great location and a restaurant option if needed. There was a few minor issues to note about our Bathroom and heat but I think it was just our room (612). The toilet and sink/shower area were separated, on opposite sides of the room. Every time you went to the bathroom, you had to walk across the room to wash your hands. It was inconvenient. I noticed in other rooms that this was not the case. The bathroom door is also not a real door but a glazed glass door. We did not feel this allowed for real privacy. The room was modern, updated and very clean. It was also very hot and hard to adjust the heating system. We just opened the window which helped to cool down the room. We were happy with our choice and would stay here again.

Room Tip: Avoid room 612 due to separate toilet and sink/shower area.

Dear guests

Warm greetings to Cleveland!

We thank you for staying with us as well as for taking the time to publish your review.
It is so nice to read that you liked our location, the room and our associates.

The bathrooms are very different in our historical building, indeed.
The heating system is individually regulable, we regret the inconvenience you had with the handling of the temperature and provide more explanation in the future.

We would be more than happy to welcome you back one day and wish you all the best in the meantime.

Best regards

I had a wonderful stay at the Renaissance and I must say that everything from start to finish was nothing but pure excellence, the rooms were magnificently equipped and an absolute joy to work from. The Blues Bar was buzzing every evening with live music and cocktails throughout the night and was one of the best 'in house bars' i've experienced in a long time.

Visiting Lucerne while on a business trip. Stayed at R for a very good price, around 220 USD including parking. Room was VERY nice and up to date, large bathroom, king size bed, etc. No complaints at all. Breakfast were very good with good variety. In the middle of the city with walking location to most everything, close to train station. Would stay here again without hesitation. Parking is on the street, so plan ahead and save some time to find a parking place.

Room Tip: See my other note, plan ahead for parking.
