“Fantastic views from room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

This hotel has a prime location and the views from the rooms are spectacular.
Rooms are small ( typical european standards )
Major disappointment was the lack of air conditioning.
The table fan provided was v small and doesnt cool the room.
Summers are very hot and this hotel is def not recommended bcoz of non aircon.Leaving the balcony doors open doesnt help .
Otherwise there s nothing to fault. Breakfast buffet is good and staff are friendly and helpful.

We spent 5 days here in this beautiful riverfront hotel in the center of Lucerne. Its rooms are large and nicely remodeled. Its riverfront terrace is the perfect site to have dinner or drinks and watch the sunset on the nearby mountains. The staff is knowledgeable and courteous and can suggest tours of the city's many museums and historic churches, They can also arrange tours on Lake Lucerne, city motor tours and cable car trips to Mount Pilatus. The history of the hotel dates back several centuries but it is modern in every way!

Room Tip: Junior suites provide a large balcony, two flat screen tvs and a very large bathroom, as well as sit...

Lucerne is a beautiful city and the hotel itself is equally lovely - nice furnishings, great location on the river, lovely views. The welcome drinks, and in-room snacks and coffees are a nice touch as well. The only disappointment is the lack of air conditioning. As other travellers have noted, the fan isn't adequate and the open windows let in the street noise.

There are some reasons to recommend Hotel des Balances. It offers a magnificent location in the center of the old town on the river. The place has a glorious old world charm and a truly wonderful (if outrageously overpriced) restaurant. The rooms are fine and the hotel provides a complimentary welcome snack and drink offering.

However, the hotel lacks some basic niceties---no concierge, no fitness facility, and worst of all, no air conditioning. A summer stay required us to leave our windows open and there was considerable noise from the street. Given the high prices here, the hotel simply should not be chosen for a summer visit to Lucerne.

The hotel looks beautiful from the outside and sits in a great location overlooking the river. Breakfast sat out on the balcony is a must. The rooms are well appointed although the tv was poor quality however with so much to do in Lucerne this was a minor drawback. Staff were friendly and polite, the 1400 check in is strictly adhered to however they will look after bags if you are early. We also received a welcome cocktail which was a nice touch. The room on the old town side was slightly noisy in the morning due to the street noise.

Room Tip: The old town side rooms can be noisy with street noise, especially if it is warm and windows are lef...

After a long train journey from St Moritz with luggage it would have been nice to have been met by a porter and assisted up the steps to reception. However, when we reached reception the staff were friendly and welcoming, but we were then left to find our own way to the room. We had chosen a junior suite with a wonderful river view and small furnished balcony. The junior suite was well appointed and beautifully decorated with a cream and gold theme but felt rather small, not helped by superfluous furniture - at least one armchair and one coffee table less would have made negotiation easier. The room technology was excellent and the inclusion of a coffee maker a real bonus, but, as we were not accompanied to the room, we were left to discover our own way around the various devices.
We stayed for four nights in August and the lack of air-conditioning was the real problem for us. I understand that it is not possible for the Hotel to install a/c but this is something to bear in mind when travelling to Lucerne during the summer. The portable fan provided was not adequate and so it was necessary to open the windows at night, which gave us a couple of disturbed nights from the noise.
Dinner on the terrace overlooking the river was very good and the restaurant staff excellent. Reading the other reviews, however, we must have picked the wrong day to take breakfast, as we found it rather chaotic and so did not return again. It always seems very mean for a Hotel of this level and price to exclude breakfast and it was the only one of the four we stayed in during our Swiss trip to do this.

Room Tip: Choose a river view room with a balcony.

We stayed 2 nights, when it happened to be 90 degrees outside. The hotel is in an old building that does not have a/c. The room fan didn't cut it, so it was hard to sleep. This type of weather may be an anomaly, but if you go in the summer, don't stay here if the weather forecasts indicate hot weather. Also, the entry to the hotel requires you to either climb 6-8 steps to the lobby with your bags, or you can ring the bell, and someone will come to carry your bags up. There is an entry through the bar area on the lower level and the elevator goes to that level, however it would be difficult to navigate with large bags. For people with disabilities, this hotel may not be the best option. Other than that, the hotel was nice, the room was pleasant, the staff friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was great. The bathroom was newer and clean. The hotel sits on the Reuss River, so our room view was great. You can walk everywhere from the hotel, including the train station. So, no cabs needed.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a river view.
