“Excellent Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

Hotel des Balances is excellently locared on the river with very good rooms and facilities. Very comfortable bed and staff did everthing possible to make us welcome and comfortable. Mirrors everywhere can be confusing. Very good breakfast with plenty of choice and regularly replenished, together with freshly cooked hot dishes cooked to order. Not a complaint, but no need for all the "little dishes" rather than plates on buffet.
The Terrace is an excellent place to sit and relax and watch life go by on the river. Although a non smoking hotel and a non smoking terrace we did have a problem with the manager allowing people to smoke there. After complaining that they need to clarify their policy the matter was resolved and smoking there was stopped.

Room Tip: Ask for a river facing superior room

We just popped in for a coffee and a chance to relax . The staff were exceptionally courteous and welcoming. We had hot chocolates, tea and boozy coffee. Then decided on a sharing plate of antipasti to keep us going. Clean, comfortable, a table and comfy chairs by the window with a view of the lake. Excellent rest point , even if you're not staying.

Room Tip: Couldn't delete the sleep rating, we didn't stay we only had morning coffee and snacks

The hotel is located in pedestrian area, but taxis are able to access it directly. There are stairs leading up to the reception area so bags have to be carried. At the time I arrived there was nobody to assist with the bags so we left them there and then the front desk sent someone to hekp. Small hotel with old charm. There is currently some sort of construction being done so the front door looks like one from a construction site. I assume that will be done soon. The beds could be a little more luxurious, but that seems to be typical of Switzerland. Free welcome drink on arrival and free wifi. An upgrade to a river view is absolutely worth it. There is a tiny terrace from which you can see all the sites of Lucerne plus the mountains. Very beautiful. Had breakfast for 27CHF. It was fine, but not overwhelming. Overall a very nice stay.

Room Tip: Spring for the river view - it's worth it

This was, by far, the best hotel experience I've had in a long time.

Des Balances is very easy to find, just 10 minutes walking from the train station. I had a backpack though, so for those with luggage it may be easier to take a quick cab. The front of the building is pretty remarkable, the whole front is painted. The door when I walked in was under construction, so you had to be careful not to trip. Des Balances is located right in the old town, next to shopping and tons of restaurants - so you won't be bored or hungry!

The check-in was very easy, Doreen at the front desk was able to take my bags and keep them safe as I had arrived early. I was even able to come back and get my room before the regular 2pm check in time. My room was on the 5th floor with a small balcony over looking the lake/river and church. I left my window open nearly the whole time to hear the various bells chiming throughout the city. It felt very safe at this hotel with 24hr reception. The rooms are also surprisingly quite for such an old building! I didn't hear either of my neighbours.

The room itself was fairly small, much like the rest of the hotels in Europe, but it was well equipped and excellently decorated. There is a coffee maker (tasty!), iPod dock, tons of lighting and a safe. There are l'occitane en provence products throughout the room including shoe mitt, nail file, shampoo and body wash to name a few. Unfortunately, no conditioner! You can also order a robe, which I did not realize until late into the last night - so if you're anything like me, and a robe just makes your hotel visit extra special, be sure to order that from the front desk when you arrive.

The bed was very comfortable and you are also able to ask at the front desk for different types of pillows. I always bring a travel pillow, so I didn't need to utilize this service, but it's nice to know they have it. The brochure said three different options! The wifi was reliable and very easy to log in to, a nice change from the 45 character passwords I'm used to getting. There are a few English channels on the tv, mostly news, if you're thinking of staying in. And the best part is you get a welcome drink when you arrive!

One thing I highly recommend you do is go to the restaurant for breakfast. For 27chf for a buffet breakfast, this is by far one of the better deals in Lucerne - it can be a very expensive city! The breakfast is gourmet, champagne included for those of you who enjoy a mimosa. And tons of options for food. I went at two different times for breakfast on the two days and the buffet is constantly being refilled with fresh items, so there is no need to worry about what time you go. The only downside to the restaurant the first day was that the staff were not the friendliest, but the next morning (same staff) they were much more cheery.

All in all, this is a great place to stay. If you are heading to Lucerne I highly recommend that you splurge a bit and stay in this hotel!

Okay it is not a review about the hotel which is very good but about a little local secret. I had to sit long and hard about whether to write this because the danger is a lot more people will visit and then I wont be able to get a table any longer...

We love breakfasts and brunches and of all the places we have tried so far this one has the best value for money there is. If you are there for a week I guess the choice becomes a little bit flat but if you want to treat yourself then why not. The breakfast costs CHF 35 and for that you can have unlimited drinks, including prosecco - a good one at that, juices and shakes as well as the usual coffee and tea. There is also the availability of hot food cooked just for you including bacon and eggs, omlettes and pancakes and then just to keep you going there is the usual buffet that you get most other places as well, just here the presentation is a touch better. Given that the breakfast is served from 7 till 11am there is just about the right amount of time to fill yourself for the day reading the local paper looking out over the river and enjoying the ambiente. All in all compares very favourably to the big hotels on the lake that charge almost double the amount. Try it, its worth it.

It is beyond my understanding, that every tour company has Lucerne on its itinerary! The old city is nice, but nothing you cannot find in many other old cities in Europe. With that in mind, why is everything twice as expensive? This hotel is no exception. An unassuming "Front door" and an entrance where you need to take the stairs up with your luggage, to the reception, windows without screens and a lot of street noise, this hotel charges a premium. Forget about its restaurant too, unless you enjoy paying 59 Sfr for a Rib eye steak and pretty penny for a decent wine. Way overrated and overpriced!

Starting from the location which is within walking distance of all major attractions in Lucerne, to the outstanding service of the staff and the excellent food in the restaurant , there is nothing that needs improvement. Congratulations to the management and the staff.
