“Clean, simple and decent 3 star hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2011

This is a good but basic hotel with friendly helpful staff. The bedrooms are small though and there is a lot of 70s wood decorating but the room had a balcony with fantastic view and was clean, only downside to the room was that it just had a super small shower room with bad lighting. The beds were small but comfortable. In the morning the breakfast had relatively limited hot and cold choices but all was of a good quality. The hotel runs a mini bus to take you to and from the ski lifts. In the evenings there is a bar and restaurant which seems quite good and was busy which is a good sign.

The hotel is ideal if you’re looking for low cost family holiday or with a group for a couple of days, although I’m not sure I could stay a week here or the resort for longer than a couple of days. It’s not luxurious but would suggest it’s a decent 3 star hotel. The only thing I think is the hotel is a 10 min walk from the ski lifts and the town centre, which is a hassle after you, do it once or twice.

Ater a night in the ultra modern Holiday Inn Bern Westside, arriving at the Banklialp was like stepping into the 70's. But do not let this put you off!! The staff were excellent; the views stunning and the room warm & cosy and the beds comfortable. Breakfast was great, real home cooking after the corporate layout of the Holiday Inn.
Every meal we eat at the hotel was excellent especially the "BBQ at the table" which was a real experience in-doors. We enjoyed the real Sauna and the hotel even lent us a couple of taboggans as we did not want to rent some for a whole day.
Yes the rooms are quite small. Yes the shower is a little odd set in a tiny bathroom and yes the deco is out of the 70s but this is more than compensated by the views, the service and the overall Swiss hospitality especially from the waiter, (Serbian Mafia!!) and reception (Austrian courtesy).
Switzerland is very expensive and should the exchange rates cahnge in our benefit we would certainly return to Banklialp....

We arrived around 6pm, received a room at the top floor of the old building. The room had poor lighting, no carpeting, no balcony, one chair, two flimsy beds. The shower had mildew all around it, the wall tiling was falling off in some parts, and the toilet was running constantly and black at the bottom. After I asked them if this is what we paid for-they only said it was the only room available- they hadn't even apologized. Unfortunately we paid by voucher, so we couldn't even ask for our money back and leave the hotel.
The second night we were transferred to the standard rooms- by far much better.
The breakfast was great. What really disappointed us, was their lack of concern towards our comfort. This is not what I would expect of a 3-star Swiss hotel.

When staying in Engelberg we went here for dinner as we had been here before. But it was awfull.
Cheesefondue was disgusting and the service beside the poor boy that was trying to do his best to take care of the clients. He did it good and it is a shame for him to work there. The owner was sitting constantly with locals on a table discussing loudly. Big signs are put on table as of 18.00 hours till 21. smoking prohibited, but some locals were smoking a cigar and others cigarettes. When asking for some vegetables for our children the immediate reply was: We need to charge more. A rip off and to avoid!!!!

We just returned from a ski vacation to Engelberg. The staff at the Banklialp went out of their way to make us feel at home. The view of the Alps from our room was spectacular.

Decided to visit Switzerland this summer (2004). Couldn't afford brochure prices so booked cheap flights to Basel with EasyJet and followed the hotel link on their webpage to end up at Octopus Travel. Found several hotels in Engelberg and selected the Banklialp as it was cheap and it looked good on its website.
All went smoothly and we arrived early evening in August. Hotel is 10 mins easy walk from railway station, free parking for guests travelling by car. Location is brilliant, away from the town, backing on to forest, beautiful views from rooms and restuarant.
Most rooms have balconies overlooking the village of Engelberg and the mountains. Our 2 rooms had a shared balcony which worked brilliantly for us, but most rooms have individual balconies.
Hotel is 3 star, but fairly basic. Rooms well equipped but no tea/coffee facilities in rooms - sockets available (take an adaptor) if you need to use electrical equipment. Beds comfortable, shower/WC very clean. Cable TV interesting (channel 1 gives useful daily weather forecast for various areas in Switzerland).
Didn't get chance to try hotel sauna.
Breakfast was excellent - cold buffet (meat, cheese, eggs, cereal, yoghurt, fresh fruit, croissants, bread, jam, honey, coffee, selection of teas etc). Have as much as you like! Staff very friendly and helpful. Hotel does evening meals - didn't try them as too busy exploring, but restuarant seemed full in the evenings.
The Banklialp seemed to be very popular with locals and tourists alike and caters very efficiently for large groups. Popular folklore evening on Saturdays - continues till midnight. Also seemed very well equipped for skiers (ski rooms, loads of hanging pegs, extra toilets and showers).
To sum up, if you're looking for 5 star luxury this is not the hotel for you, but if you want cheap, cheerful, excellent location, good food - try the Banklialp.
