“So noisy”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

This hostel extremely noisy! At night we can hear people talking, laughing, shouting in the corridor. But that was not the hostel's fault.
This hostel has a design flaw with their doors and lockers, when people closes it we always heard the noisy door BUM..BUM...., it was a nightmare and the door sound always awaken us from time to time.
The bathroom was dirty, lots of hair on the floor.
Breakfast was nice since swiss is expensive country, and location is excellent near the lake.

Auberge de Jeunesse Geneva (Geneva hostel) conveniently nestles itself right next to the Geneva Lake (Lac Leman). Literally a 3 min walk to the lakeside near enough for you to look out over the entire lake from your room window. t's a bit expensive but things are overpriced everywhere in Switzerland anyway. It's one of the cheapest in Geneva. We were in Geneva to do short internships at the United Nations. One thing i liked about Geneva and this hostel was free tram/ bus passes were provided to guests upon arrival, which made getting around this
extremely small and compact city a lot easier. We took the tram every day from the station Butini to the UN, via France, Sismondi. And as the female announcer said "prochain arrêt Nations", its when we knew it was time for us to get off.

Free breakfast included was reasonably nice: basically just toasts, muesli, milk, yoghurt etc. My roommate happened to be a Sikh father and son from India. I didn't sleep a wink the first night because they were loud snorers. But i got used to it the next night. They wore colourful turbans and got up really early very morning to shower and pray with their scriptures. Really admirable and devout believers of sikhism. And we had a lot of interesting conversations. The father asked me a lot of interesting but strange questions like "do we have McDonald's in where I live" Answer: loads of McDonald's and KFCs within 5 minute's walk. They were really nice people. And I got to learn a bit of their culture from these conversations. Should have taken a picture with them. And another guy, presumably a Hindu coming from Paris, stayed upper bunk for only one night and then probably moved to another room because he couldn't stand the thunderous snoring. Then a swiss native from Lausane arrived who only stayed for one night to see a friend in Geneva. He tended to pronounce wi-fi like wee-fee and add an H to words like owl.

So basically people came and went during my stay there. There was also a Korea guy staying there. He barely spoke to us and slept all the time in his bunk bed. Also one of my roommates was from Thailand.

My friends and i stayed at his hostel for 3 nights, as it was the cheapest option in Geneva. The beds were uncomfortable and gave me a back ache the next morning. And wifi didn't work in our rooms, so we had to go down to the cafeteria every time we wanted to go on the internet. The showers weren't too great as well, since the water only runs for about 10 seconds.
We thought this hostel was a 'youth' hostel (since that's what it said on the key card), but there was a woman who was in her 50-60's (we're assuming) who was staying with us for 2 nights. It was just a really weird experience. Not terrible, but maybe staying in a hotel would have been better.

Stayed here for 2 nights at the end of march. It is a good 10 min walk from the train station, but close to lake geneva where u can walk along the promenade into the city centre.
It was undergoing building works at the time so doesn't look as smart as it will when its finished.
We had a twin en-suite on the top floor- if you're creative you could call it a penthouse with terrace and lake views! Clean, hot shower and comfy bed, what more do you need.
Also free breakfast is a bonus in an expensive city- hot drinks, juice, bread with jam, ham and cheeses and cereal.
Only downside is the kitchen is pretty useless- only a microwave. Not much character as its in a big modern block, but cheap for the location.

This hostel is a great place to take school students aged around 18, but if you're just planning a cheap stay somewhere, I'd avoid at all costs! Although there was a lot of renovation work going on, the hostel staff were grumpy and unenthusiastic, and very unfriendly when manning the breakfast or dinner buffets. The excitement of being away meant that all the school parties were wandering around and playing with the elevators until after 11pm, and the food itself only just passed muster; perhaps if there'd been even a slight touch of friendliness, this wouldn't have mattered to me so much.
The refurbished areas are starting to look good: the library in particular is very nice. There is also free Wifi (which our students appreciated), and the free travel cards were an excellent part of the deal.
The hostel is only two tram stops from the station, too - actually only a ten to fifteen minute walk.
In short: this place is fine as a cheap base for school groups, but you might want to take some earplugs.

There are some building works going on at the moment at least. It wasn't such a problem although you have to walk around a bit further to get in, but wasn't woken by anyone. The place is pretty concrete, and the staff are a bit funny, even if you speak French! The rooms were warm and comfortable at least, and the lockers with specific key-card access was a bonus. Bathrooms are pretty tired but not too awful. The worst thing I can say is that wifi is only available on the ground floor and it was absolutely freezing down there - even in a padded coat I had to put my hood up to avoid chills round my neck and we left as soon as we could. Not conducive to meeting people at all. As I say, luckily I shared a room with some great people otherwise I would have been pretty miserable here!

Stayed here for a night while transiting to germany. The rooms were nice and cosy with fresh linen. No towels are given. The morning breakfast is plentiful but limited in variety. The view outside the rooms is non-existent.
The management is polite and helpful.
Wlakable from the the main railway station Cornavin and the Lake. Surrounded by Hotels and grocery stores.
