“Perfect match for a long stay in Geneva”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

I have spent more that 1 year in Geneva for work. I was looking for a place that would be clean, convenient, functional and that I would not get visually bored of.That's exactly what I found at the Starling.

Starling residence is a residence hotel located within walking distance of downtown Geneva. If you feel lazy, you can still take the Tram that stops right in front of the residence and takes you to the center very quickly. You will be given a free pass to use public transportation when you check-in. Many of the best restaurants of Geneva are close to the hotel (Le Bistroquet(best beef tartare!), L'Olivier de Provence, le Vieux Carouge (best fondues!), la Maison Rouge, etc)

Rooms are very functional. I stayed in one of the "Superior Room" (might be called slightly differently), which is made of :
- A small kitchen
- A bathroom with a shower
- An office corner with a desk and a chair
- A living room with couch, table and 30'' TV (there are HDMI plugs if you want to plug your laptop)
- A bedroom with a kit size bed that is very comfortable (The hotel has many types of pillows if you have specific requirements)

If you can, ask for one of the highest floors as you will have a nice view on the mountains when you wake up.

The very top floor holds a few exclusive rooms that are slightly more expensive, but you will get a Terrace and a nice view as well. Definitely a good pick if you come between May and September!

In Summary, great place to stay in!

The only thing I want to point out as a necessary improvement is the Wifi connection. The hotel has a free Wifi connection for its customers which works great in general, but there is a bandwidth issue (slowness) which can become annoying at rush hours (i.e from to 5pm to 11pm).

The residence also provides dry cleaning services which is very convenient when you plan on staying for a while.

For 1 year, I have seen a staff team that was always keen on satisfying my needs. I want to thank Quentin, Pauline, and Amanda that were particularly thoughtful. Many thanks also to Mr Rey that manages the place with boundless enthusiasm.

Don't hesitate, choose the Starling!

Nicolas TM.

It was indeed a nice apartment. But It was our worst stay in Switzerland.
It is location outside the town centre, near a university but at night it is not a safe place.
Our car window was smashed and some of our belonging was stolen.
It leaves us an impression that such a safe country can be not safe in some location.
If you are driving think twice before booking this hotel, dun leave anything in the car & buy car or rental insurance.

Room Tip: Park at You Own Risk!

Probably the most reasonably priced hotel residence in town - very clean and decent sized rooms. Fine for business travelers - but location is not ideal if you're a tourist. Hardly any restaurants nearby although the tram 15 stop is across the street and will take you into the centre.

The room quality was very good with everything we like & need and at a very good price. Plenty of space, a good walk-in shower, a desk, free wi-fi (which works) & a small kitchenette (fine for a cuppa or a quick breakfast). Staff very friendly & helpful, did receive an email with entry code but also had a member of staff on duty.

Area a little down at heel but a small price to pay as the tram stop is so near & VFM so much better that in other parts of the city. Some plus sides for the location - almost next door you have a great Italian restaurant & on the other side, a supermarket & wine merchant. Close to a couple of museums - but don't go early as they are late in opening.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room as hotel is on a busy road.

Only spent one night here on a business trip with colleagues. Room was very good, comfortable and stylish. I can't really comment on the apartment facilities as didn't use them though judging from the cooking smells coming from other apartments, others certainly were. There is a tram stop immediately outside and we given a free 1-day travel card upon checking in. The central train station was about 10-15 min away during rush hour, so a considerably faster and cheaper option than taking a taxi. Would also recommend the Italian restaurant at the bottom of the road for those not cooking for themselves. My only gripe was the reception area and checking in/checking out. It's tiny and only 1 staff person can handle a guest at a time. So with 5 of us checking in/out it took an age.So allow time for this if you're on a tight schedule.

Similar to another reviewer, I did not receive an email informing the entry code for the appartment. But as I have read tripadvisor before doing my reservation, I specifically mentioned about the code in the remarks column (while doing the booking) as I am sure I would be arriving late in Geneva. I waited but no email came. A few days before my scheduled arrival, I emailed the hotel again requesting for the code and again, there was no reply. On the day of my arrival, I called the hotel and I was finally given the code. And true enough, when I arrived, the reception was closed and there was no one in sight. I could not imagine if I had not taken the initiative to call the reception, I would be stuck outside the hotel! I thought by responding to the customer's queries, the staff are not displaying professionalism.
The apartment is well furbished with a small kitchenette fully equipped with microwave, electric stove, utensils and cutlery. I did not do any cooking, but the microwave and kettle is good enough for me to have a decent breakfast. The bed is comfortable but the insulation for the apartment is so good to the point that even at nights during end October, I need to open the windows. Not sure if it is a good idea to stay here during summer.
The reception staff is friendly but is unable to help answer my queries regarding trains schedule, which is something out of their job scope, so I am not too crossed about it.
The location of the apartment is a few tram stops away from the city, with the tram stopping just outside the apartment.

Taking off one star because they forgot to send the entry code for the hotel on the day of check in. If you are checking in after 11.00 p.m (9.00 PM on Sunday) you will need a entry code without which you cannot go in. Apparently we were supposed to receive this by email before our arrival but we didn't. We were lucky our cab driver helped us call the hotel emergency number and they gave us the code to enter.

Note that these are serviced apartments and not really hotel rooms. There are absolutely no other amenities: no room service, no restaurant, no gym, no business center etc.

The hotel itself is very good save for the airconditioner which was a portable model and noisy. This would have been a big concern but it was September so we didn't need to really run it that much. The room was more like a studio apartment. it had a Kitchenette with some basic utensils, a small microwave, a glass top range and a small refrigerator. They only service the room once in three days including towel changes, toiletries etc. There is a Migros in the next building so it is easy to grab some groceries and any quick serve meals if you are inclined to do so. Acacias tram stop is right in front of the hotel entrance and is served by Tram 15. Like all hotels in Geneva they provide complimentary passes for each person for the tram system for the entire stay. Wifi internet was also complimentary and worked well. They were also accomodating with our baggage when we had to check out in the morning but our train was in the evening.

Note though that the hotel is not really near anything. You do have to get on the tram to get anywhere interesting in Geneva.
