My dad and I were over for CERN's (Particle Physics laboratory) Open Days and we decided to stay at City Hostel Geneva because it was reasonably priced, located close to the train station - Gare Cornavin - and was offering free transport passes for guests of the hostel for the duration of the stay, covering the trams, buses and the shuttle buses.

We arrived at the hostel quite late as our plane arrived in late. It was a little tricky to find at first, but once we found it, it was easy to locate for the remainder of the stay.

The hostel is basic, with a kitchen and wash facilities on each floor, as well as lockers in the basement for storage of luggage. There is a small Internet cafe just beside the reception where you can print off items too. Wifi internet is available throughout the hostel and it was handy to be able to use it throughout the hostel in the rooms. The connection speed was pretty impressive. The wifi code was given to us at the reception on arrival.

The reception is clean and tidy, but the staff are a little miserable and didn't smile very often. It would have been nice to see the staff smile a little more often.

I stayed in the female dormitories for the majority of the stay there. They were pleasant, with a sink and a cupboard. The beds are comfortable, however, it is rather noisy on the east side of the hostel with the traffic. Bedding is provided by reception and if you forget to bring a charger for your device, you can pay a deposit of 10 Swiss francs for the duration of your stay, and you can get the 10 Swiss francs after you've handed the charger in and it's receipt.

Dad stayed in a single room on one night, and stayed in a male dorm during the other nights of the stay. He enjoyed the private rooms, but didn't sleep too well in the male dorms because of the noise from the main road.

For the nights that we stayed, and in the dorms and the single rooms, the cost added up to €270, which was very well priced considering the location.

The hostel is reasonably priced, and is located very close to the main train station in Geneva. It's not close to the main city centre, but there are trams and buses that will take you across the river to the city centre. I'd recommend City Hostel Geneva if your looking for somewhere that is well priced and that is within access the trams to the city centre and the main train station.

It is the cleanest hostel I ever stayed.

The room is super small but good for only short stay.
It is 15 mins walk from station. If by tram, less than 5mins.

The only draw back is wifi nit working at all. If u need Internet, it is quite a headache for me.

Good bathroom facility. At least u really can take a hot shower unless other hostel.

My cousin and I arrived from Paris at Geneva's Cornavin Train Station - it was a little difficult to find this hostel from the train station (despite a few signs erected along the way) because its up a street and then around the corner - not making it visible from the main drag.

Although City Hostel Geneva is not very appealing from the outside, it is clean and quite safely guarded. Everything is rather basic but it's okay - my cousin and I were only staying in Geneva for one night and spent most of the day out so we couldn't really comment on the hostel itself too much. City Hostel Geneva is definitely not a youth hostel though - it is quiet without much of a social area except for a small lounge which makes it ideal for families and solo travelers who want a stay unmarred by partygoers.

In terms of location, City Hostel Geneva depends - for those looking to be very close to the train station, it's great. My cousin and I were able to catch our train to Venice without any stress due to the proximity of the hostel to the station. But for those who really want to be in the heart of ultra expensive Geneva, this isn't the case. City Hostel Geneva is in a somewhat iffy area - although they do score some points by giving you a completely free 'Geneva Transport Card'. This allows you free transport on Geneva's buses, trams, and taxi boats which makes getting into the city of Geneva easier. Personally, my cousin and I elected to take taxi boats across Lake Geneva for the 'full experience' - it took 3 taxi boat rides for us to get into the center of Geneva.

For those just passing through Geneva and looking for a quiet stay, City Hostel Geneva is for you.

Excellent option in a very expensive city like Geneva when you are only staying for a few days. We stayed for 2 nights in June 2013. The hostel is very close to the Geneva Railway station. The rooms are quite compact but very clean, beds comfortable. We liked the fact that there was a small table and chairs in the room. The shared bathrooms and toilets are exceptionally clean. Kitchen was fairly small but we had no problems cooking when we wanted to and didn't have to wait for others to finish. Excellent idea that each room has its own cold storage locker so no dispute over who owns what in the fridge. All staff were fantastic and very helpful. We are an older couple +60 and would certainly have no hesitation in recommending to others in our age group. A number of supermarkets very close by in next street. Would recommend to others. It's a clean and compact hostel very close to Geneva railway station. Price is quite steep 32 CHF per night (for hostel) per person but in heart of Geneva you can not get anything better.
I stayed only for one night for transit purpose. They provide you with one day public transport pass with your stay which is very useful.

It was my surprise about the cleanliness of the hostel, especially the bathroom and toilet. Affordable price (around CHF30/pax/night). Good location (near train station). The hostel booking confirmation also guide you from train station/airport/bus terminal to the hostel. This hostel has a lift, a locker room, a small kitchen. Rooms are quite small; but it does not matter.

Room Tip: Should book in advance as the hostel is usually fully booked
