“Simple, clean and cheap”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2013

It's what you expect out of a hostel: rooms are small, mattress is simple (no springs) and the toilets and showers are shared.
However, its quite cheap, and rooms, toilets and showers are clean.
In addition, two points: (1) the kitchen is rather small, and (2) Internet connection is not very fast.

Stayed over one night, only for transit reasons. The location is a mere 5 minutes from the train station and with the free 2 days transport card you can get almost anywhere easily. It's a 5 minute walk to the lake also. Close by is a Lidl supermarket so cheap food and booze. Linen given was clean and the two sheets kept you separate from the mattress and duvet. Did not use the kitchen but the shower was hot and powerful. Towel was too small, but you can rent a larger one. Staff was OK in reception. Cheap by Swiss accommodation standards. You can pay the room charge by credit or debit card. Nearest ATM was near to the railway station so about 3 minutes walk. overall a good one night stop.

I stayed here for one night and the hostel itself was very clean - the showers were good and the free travel card was great. However, this is the first hostel I've stayed in that required you to pay a deposit to use the fridge and cupboard spaces. It wasn't a particularly social hostel, as many of the others I've stayed in have simply required you to write your name on your food and everyone can use the fridge, making it a good opportunity to meet other people. This is virtually impossible in this hostel however. The room itself was exceptionally hot, and despite having a fan in the room it was impossible to sleep as the room was sticky and uncomfortable.
The price itself was at the higher end, however this seemed to be relatively cheap for Geneva. Overall, the hostel was OK for a night but I wouldn't have wanted to stay any longer as the rooms were so hot.

Very helpful staff, easy registration, they give you clean linen and small towel free of charge. You also get a travel card, and can rent a converter and a lockable section in the fridge in the kitchen for only a deposit which you get back when you return things. Was quiet, safe, and SUPER CLEAN! Surprisingly clean for hostel. Great value for money, we were very pleased. Also good location very close to train station and lake.

I only stayed here for one night but the man on reception was so helpful. He gave us all of the information that we needed. There was lots of communal areas. The showers had separate changing areas behind locked doors. You could not enter the hostel without a key card. The hostel was centrally located and we were given a card for local transport. It was also very clean, a very enjoyable stay.
The only negative thing to say was that the bin men came at just after 5am, and it became very hot in the room despite there being a fan at night.

City Hostel Geneva is the first hostel I've ever stayed in and it set the bar really high for hostels. The price is quite steep for a hostel (I paid 35CHF/night) but considering that it's in Switzerland, it's the best you can get. The hostel provides you with a transport card which allows you to take any form of public transportation (under the unireso network) for free. The card is really handy if you want to take the taxi boats along the lake, or if you want to visit places like the UNOG or the Switzerland-France border. Transport in Europe can be really expensive.

The hostel itself is well maintained, they give you clean sheets on your first night, and provide you with a towel for your baths (albeit a tiny facial towel, bigger towels can be rented from the front desk). Day lockers are provided for free, which is great if you're arriving earlier than the stipulated check-in time, just remember to bring your own lock. Laundry facilities are available at the basement, but it is a little pricey (again, it's Switzerland). Computers are readily available at the lobby, but they are not free. Just bring your laptop or access the internet with your phone, free wifi is provided throughout the duration of stay.

Rooms are ok, I stayed in a twin sharing room with my friend. It was a little bit smaller than expected and we had a tiny problem opening both our suitcases at the same time, but it wasn't a big deal, we just took turns. The shared toilets were clean and well-maintained. They provide sanitizers for you to clean the toilet seats so don't be afraid of contracting any weird diseases.

There is a gift shop at the check-in counter that sells swiss army knives and other souvenirs at reasonable prices (lower than the souvenir shops outside). Overall, the hostel was a great value for money in a city that is so expensive. I would stay here again if I had the chance to go back to Geneva.
