Let me start with the obvious: this is Geneva, one of the most expensive cities in the world, and hotel accommodation to match. So, if the Bel Esperance is not cheap by international standards, its prices are unmatched in Geneva terms. We know this first hand, as this was our home city. We have now been expatriates for many years and, for the past seven years, my husband, my daughter and I only stay here when we come back, either for holidays or work. It is the most perfect location you can imagine, in the heart of the Old Town, within walking distance of the shopping area, the lake, museums, and with very convenient bus connections to pretty much everywhere, including the UN. There is a charming little terrace at the top, with views of the lake and the cathedral.
Rooms are quite spartan, often small, but spotlessly clean (if you travel with kids, try to get the family room, two rooms with a shared bathroom, often booked long in advance). Breakfast is excellent, there is a laundry room available for guests, and a kitchen too. Staff are very helpful, and the whole place oozes respectability, honesty, and Swiss cleanliness (no smoking please!). This is after all a hotel where the benefits go for the good deeds of the Salvation Army. The sometimes exotic notion of English (if you're not Swiss francophone, good luck with finding what the "pharmacy cupboard" means) only adds to the quaint charm of a place where we shall always return.
