“Weekend Trip”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2011

A welcoming exterior and reception area make a good start to the weekend. Rooms are spacious, clean and well decorated within the traditional 'Swiss' Alpine style. Coffee and Tea facilities in the room were useful, though were not replenished after the first day, which was a real shame. The service was great on arrival and first impressions, however this did not continue throughout the stay and became average, dependent on who was on the reception desk.

The basement restaurant was fun and lively, great atmosphere for the whole family. The fondues were delicious and service was great. As this was our first night out, we thought it was a little pricey, however after experiencing a few more cafes and restaurants, it was certainly not above average. Geneva is not a bargain City...... We would really recommend the Riverside cafe over on the Left Bank too. Excellent.

The hotel would really have benefited from having a bar.

All in all, good value for money in Geneva.

Room Tip: As high as possible and ask for a room away from the lift....

The reception at this hotel was a mix of a great welcome and professionalism. The staff was very friendly, asked all the questions that I asked them, gave me a map of the city, and a free card to use in the Geneva mass-transit network. The hotel has free wireless which is a very good point if you are traveling on business. Also, the hotel is very well located in a couple of streets parallel to the Quay, having a pharmacy, a supermarket and several nice restaurants nearby for all the pockets. You might be surprised with the odd smell in the lobby at night, but that is the smell of the Swiss fondue and you will find it a bit elsewhere in the city. Overall, an excellent choice to stay in Geneva.

We knew this hotel was going to be very twee but it was the most reasonable we could find in a good location. We had decided to stay for a couple of nights in a medium priced hotel and to splurge on a 5* for our last night in Geneva. This hotel is very small but the rooms whilst twee are clean and comfortable. There is a little bit of noise from other rooms when you are in the bathroom e.g I could hear every word the lady in the room above ours was saying.

My only real gripe was the breakfast. The breakfast was not included and on going down at 9am (breakfast did not finish to 11am) there were no set tables, no one to seat us or set a table. Eventually the only member of staff on duty set us a table but upon going to the buffet we foujd the hot food was 90% finished and not replenished and the other cold options were also very low. We went out for breakfast the following day because of this.

The travel card issued to guests staying in Geneva hotels is great and we made good use of it especially the free boat taxi trips across the lake.

However overall an ok hotel and popular on the tourist trail because of its theme.

10 mins from Cornavin train station and not far from the old city centre. This is the 3rd time I use this hotel when passing thru Geneva. The restaurant was very good and great fun for the kids, with an Alpine folklore and setting.

Loved this hotel and its super location- near Lake and train and coach stations. Loved the twee Swiss decor and well furnished rooms. Helpful reception staff and lovely breakfast. It was very quiet and the air conditioning was a blessing. My teenage sons like the previous reviewer were not too impressed with the cheesy smell though!!

This is my 3rd time at Edelweiss, and I forgot the cheese smell in the building until I arrived. Yes, it's there, and it didn't really bother me, though noticeable (but not in my room).

The restaurant is famous amongst tour operators, as it offers a kitsch, but really good ultimate swiss entertainment/dining experience. It is REALLY worth while having dinner there.

Anyway the staff are very helpful, and the rooms great - free wifi. Yes, the lift is small - you have to get out to change your mind, but it works and there never seems to be a queue despite the size.

The staff also gave us a free travel pass for tram, train bus and ferry, which worked SO WELL! Worth asking if available when you stay. I think it's a government tourism initiative.

If you have dinner, Fondue is the go - both cheese for mains, and chocolate for dessert.

Looking forward to our return.

This hotel is a nine minute walk from the station (Cornavin). For those who need transport, take the number one bus which stops outside the station in the direction of Jardin Botanique and within 3 minutes it stops at Navigation, a one minute walk from the hotel across the Place de la Navigation.

On checking in the helpful member of staff gave me a map of Geneva and the Geneva Transport card that allows free transport in the area throughout one's stay. The hotel is about a 5 minute walk from the lake- turn right out of the hotel then first right and there straight ahead is the lake.

There is a Co Op shop across the road from the hotel where I bought bottled water and a sandwich for breakfast, as the cost of breakfast was not included in the hotel price. There are also plenty of cafes in the near vicinity should you want something better for breakfast, BUT JUST WAIT TILL YOU SEE THE PRICE OF MEALS IN GENEVA! Very expensive by UK standards, ridiculous by US standards.

My room was spotlessly clean and the bed was very comfortable. Reasonably sized bathroom with a shower cubicle but no bath. Kettle, coffee, tea and milk sachets on a tray and a very good television which shows BBC 1, 2, BBC World and CNN in English and a load of French and Swiss stations.

The lounge was chalet themed but not over the top and there is a computer with free internet operating 24/7. I found all the staff to be very helpful. The lift is small by US standards but it will take a couple with suitcases, or 4 full sized men.

And now to the subject of the cheese aroma. I think this has been overdone on here, but there is definitely a slight smell of cheese in the evenings, although it is barely perceptible. If you attend the fondu meal in the adjacent restaurant you will see the cause. For 38 Swiss Francs per person you get a green salad, cheese fondu with french bread, 2 scoops of ice cream, and a glass of wine which is a bit expensive. However the accompanying entertainment makes it reasonable value because the musicians play accordians, bells, the alpenhorn which stretches from the top of the staircase to the bottom, and various other devices (a bowl with a ball bearing in it I think) and yodel. BUT- they let YOU have a go at the alpenhorn and you can take photos- great fun. When there are 20 or 30 fondues of boiling cheese going all at once it is inevitable that the aroma will dissipate to the hotel. But, in my opinion the odour was barely percepible and certainly did not spoil my stay. From my own research, this hotel is one of the lesser priced, decent hotels in Geneva, and I regard the price I paid for the hotel as good value compared to many others I looked at.
