“Great value, superb location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2009

When we booked this hotel for our 1st anniversary a request was made for a quiet room. Room 614 was exactly that, top floor, away from traffic and tram noise from below, even the door to the room was set back in a recess off the corridor. Great start.

The room was very comfortable indeed. Good size bed, squeaky clean large bathroom, and a sofa/tv area to relax in. We paid £111 and compared with what you would get for this price in say Rome or Paris, this was luxury.

The location is superb. A lot of reviews for hotels in this area mention the fact that the nearby area is a Red Light District. This may be true but this has zero impact on a stay in the Royal. Out of curiosity my wife and I deviated off rue de Lausanne down the side streets next to the Hotel Kipling to see the extent of the alledged problem. If a few african men hanging around on corners, or the odd prostitute lurking around is what you consider a problem then stay away from hotels off the main road.

Staying at the Royal meant we didnt have to walk through this so called 'sketchy' area. Come out the hotel and walk left and you're at the Lake and the very pleasant Quai Wilson. Come out the hotel and turn right then left and you are on the Mont Blanc bridge. For those who would rather use the tram then the stop is literally outside the hotel lobby, stop is called Mole, and the trams head across to the Old Town side of the lake every few minutes. We've travelled extensively around Europe and Geneva's Bus/Tram/Train network is one of the best, and this hotel could not be better placed to benefit from it.

We considered the Kipling, Warwick, Bernina and Edelweiss before we booked the Royal and having seen the others I am delighted with the choice we made. Would recommend this hotel without hesitation.

My husband and I are on our last night at the Hotel Royal Manotel in Geneve. I must say, that I was very scepticle to begin with, after all a Christmas away from home has to be something special! We were very impressed and we are usually quite critical of the value for money we receive at hotels and we rarely stay at anything lower than a four star. This hotel has really raised the bar. We chose the winter special package offered on their website. 3 nights for the price of two. Our room was upgraded to a very stylish and opulent Executive room. The attention to detail (free bottle of wine, mineral water and chocolates) was top notch and the room was very well cleaned. All over it was in a very good condition, the decor wasn't tired or in need of updating and the staff were friendly and very welcoming. On Christmas eve, after a trip to Gruyere, we returned to find a gift and card from the hotel in our room. They also provide a surprise turn down service before you go back to your room after dinner. This is what hotel stays should be like!
The hotel is one block from the Geneve Cornavin train station and we took the free travel pass that gets you from the Geneve airport to the Geneve station in under 15 minutes. 10 out of 10 for location and a hassle free journey! The breakfast was excellent, lots of choice of hot and cold food and all served on white linen with attentive staff and fresh clean tables. Not to be missed!

I did not enjoy the service in this hotel, it’s a 4 star hotel and I would have expected a lot better service. I have stayed in hotels costing a lot less and with less stars and received miles better service. The staff made a mistake and allocated me a disabled room and when I asked to have a normal room they were quite rude. Eventually they did allocate me a better room. Decor was also a little jaded in the hotel. The location was near train station which is convenient but not very pretty - towards the old town is much nicer. I also had to pay extra for breakfast that was not worth the cost. Tried to use computers in business centre but the printers did not work. Overall not very impressed.

The hotel is just a short walk from the main railway station. Always the pessimist I did hail a taxi outside the station to be told ........... hotel is just down the road. An honest taxi driver! We used this hotel as a stop over before returning to the UK, The hotel provides guests with a free rail ticket to the airport, and on checking in we were given discount vouchers to use at various Manotel Hotels in Geneva. We chose to have our evening meal at the Royal. Restaurant service was good, but I did not find the meal memorable. Our room was on 4th Floor over looking the busy high street, but we were not disturbed by any noise or outside lighting. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom provided all the toiletries we needed. Buffet Breakfast at the Royal is a real experience. There was so much to choose - hot and cold foods were available.

Overall I would choose this hotel as a good stopover location, but would not choose it for an entire holiday. We booked the room at a good price on the internet, but breakfast had to be paid for separately. and this pushed the price up considerably. If we book the Royal again I will resist the temptation of breakfast and make do with the complimentary tea/coffee facilities within our room.

We just came back from a 4 days trip in Geneva and stayed at the Royal Hotel which is centrally located and one block away from the train station. The staff was very courteous and helpful, the lobby is large and there was always orange juice or fresh fruits for guests to help themselves, and free access to internet - We had a room in the back, next to the railway station; however, with the double panel window, we did not hear any noise. The room and bathroom are spacious, clean and fit the standard of a 4 star hotel.
The hotel also gave free transportation ticket for bus and water taxi (yellow boat ) which is very convenient. We took bus # 8 to la Saleve and # 13 to Carouge and United Nations. On the lake, we use boat # 2 and # 3 to take us to various part of the lake.
We were very pleased with Hotel Royal and definitely will use it again.

My fiancee and I stayed here for a few nights to try and escape the awful London weather. We picked the hotel specifically because of it's 4*+ status and several good reviews on this site. We were however, a little disappointed.

In our opinion, the hotel is badly managed and does not live up to 4* standards. Little things that make a big difference - soundproofing, used items such as coffee and shampoo not replaced daily, staff who were very unknowledgable about the local area - were just unacceptable.

On check in, we asked to be moved from a smoking to a non smoking room (as we had already requested when booking) and this was no problem on the day we arrived. The following day however, we overheard another man asking the same thing and he was blankly refused on the grounds that the hotel can never guarantee which type of room you stay in!

Some positive points of the hotel are the restaurant, which served very good food, the sauna/hamman which was both empty and extremely relaxing and the free travel passes provided by the hotel for your entire stay.

If you can possibly afford it, go for somewhere on the banks of the lake or in the old town asthese areas are much nicer. If you choose to stay at the Royal, expect some minor issues.

Pros: Hotel room was very clean and comfortable. Convenient location close to train station and "Mole" tram-stop right in front of hotel. Work out room and sauna available.

Cons: Front desk staff seem overloaded with work. Wifi service was unreliable (mostly unavailable) for entire week stay. Train tracks behind hotel are definitely noisy.

I've stayed at another Manotel hotel (Epsom). This is similar: a bit closer to things but also bigger, busier, and noisier. The Royal also has classical vs. Epsom's contemporary decor.
